Well I’ve tried a zillion and one toys for Leroy and none seemed to excite him until….

I bought him one of those cheap kitty jingle balls (the plastic ones with all the holes the bell and the catnip inside – I poked the catnip out through one of the holes though).  Leroy loves it!  He carried it around and everything when I first gave it to him yesterday, and today he went back to it again and rattled it all around.  I’m also teaching him to go touch the ball with his nose when I say “ball” (the beginnings of fetch )

And… I got him a cat treat dispenser and put his pellets in it. One of these: http://www.petsafe.net/Products/Feeders/SlimCat.aspx  Leroy is so food driven that he had no problem figuring out how to roll it around and get his pellets out.  I think he had more fun rolling it then eating the pellets though… You can see in the video how there are zillions of pellets just left around (Leroy went back for them later, of course)

Jeannie was less than impressed when I showed her the jingle ball, and only gave the treat dispener a nudge or two… she’d much rather let me roll it for her and pick up what comes out or just eat out of my hand

Corpathina, we’re working on fetching! and yes it would be cool!

Sara, I don’t know if catnip is even safe for bunnies, so I took it out – it was a little ball of dried catnip, so I unfolded a paperclip and just poked out the catnip though the holes in the plastic ball.

Catnip is totally bunny safe. Most buns dont like it tho.

that is soooo adorable! Where did you get the ball?  I noticed you have a nice paper dig box too. I wish I could do that. ANy time I put something like that in there for Willie, he uses it as a litter instead.  I am hoping the neuter surgery will help with this in time.

That is so cute! I really need to get Otto a little cat ball or something – he loves pushing them around. I used a willow ball to train him to push the ball. Not sure where I’m going with that trick … maybe he can push it through a goal some day.

I also loved how Leroy left all of his pellets all over the floor. Otto does this when I stuff a toilet paper tube with treats and crimp the ends. He’ll finally get a piece out and not even notice it and keep shaking the darn thing. Lol.

Where did you get the dispenser ball? There’s a nice one on Drs Foster and Smith’s website, but I don’t really want to pay shipping on a $3 item. I just haven’t been able to find it in a pet store.

I susoect that if you do have a bun that likes catnip, the fresh stuff would be better than the dry. My mom used to grow catnip in the yard for hte kitties, might want to try it for bunbuns too

I got the treat ball at Pet People (the jingly ball too). I don’t know if it’s a national pet store chain or not but they’re one of the few stores that sells Oxbow hay and pellets – they also have a big emphasis on all natural dog and cat food I’d just look for a cat treat dispenser – the dog treat dispensers are generally too big and heavy for bunnies, and the holes were too big for the pellets, and most of the dog ones were made out of rubber which i suspect would be very fun for sharp little bunny teeth to nip off and eat

Bren, I was worried Leroy would use his diggy box it as a litter box too, but he’s pretty good about his litter box habits, and honestly – he wasn’t impressed by the diggy box I made for him. Jeannie doesn’t use it either. :/ meh. You win some, you lose some

Elrohwen, that’s hilarious that Otto does that too! I think it’s the cutest thing ever when they get so wrapped up in their toys like that   And there’s all kinds of things you can do with a bunny that knows how to play ball… push it through a goal, drop it though a mini basketball hoop, put it in a “toy box”

MirBear, I did some reading on catnip, and apparently humans can drink catnip tea, but it’s just calming for us, so idk if it will have the same effect on bunnies as it does on cats.
