Definitely wait til after the spay to bond

yes, it is because of the hormones that you have to wait for one whole month after the spay before you can start bonding them. Right after the surgery the hormones will still be in her blood. Over time, the hormones disappear.

For what to watch for in a spay/dangerous-> Ensure you get pain medications. Lots of vets say they don’t need them-but they do. If your vet tries to send you home without pain medication put your foot down. They are entirely necessary for a quick and painless recovery and they are cheap and easy to give. Do Not leave the vet office without them.
It’s as dangerous as any operation, meaning there is some risk with the anestetic. If the rabbit is older its recommended to do blood work first. As long as your vet is experienced and you checked them out well, your bun should be fine.

It’s ok for them to be in the same room so long as you KNOW without a doubt that they will not get near each other; fighting can and will happen with an unbonded pair and they could breed if your other rabbit is a male. It takes less then 30 seconds for them to breed, and like cats they are induced ovulators (Which means they don’t have a ‘time of the month’-if they breed they will get pregnant). I personally wouldn’t risk it-it’s just too possible they could mate-they can even mate if only one gets loose (through cage bars) and they can fight if only one gets loose.

I’d start on the stunt doubles. The other thing you can do-since they are likely shedding right now (mine are all blowing their coats) is brush them and put some loose fur from each other into opposite cages to get them used to the scent

I’d leave the stunt doubles in one day and then swap-and then swap the next day and swap the next day-that way they get lots of scent on them and they get used to them

Brushing is super important during a shed, but I often just ‘pluck’ (gently tug out the hair) as my buns aren’t that patient for brushing and I can ‘pet pet pluck, pet pet pluck’ alot easier I keep the vacuum near by so I can turn it on and suck up the hair I’ve pulled as I go on. In the fall shed (the other big one) I take them outisde to brush them and leave the hair out on the lawn and birds pick it up

I think it is OK that they see each other- but you want to be careful that they do not have a negative experience with each other-as that will hinder future intro/bonding attempts- as they will remember.

When introducing bunnies they can either immediately want to get defense and possibly fight- or I have seen where they have practically ignored each other for over an hour and them started to get into a fight.

It all depends on the rabbits involved- so you can let them get used to the idea of each other and seeing each other thru the bars if they do not box or fight thru the openings- but I would wait until after spay recovery to bond and introduce together.  I don’t think there is enough time between now and the spay to have a concrete bond- plus hormones will still play a role.

Sorry for the late reply on this but two things:

1. Be careful about letting them interact between bars – watch carefully for aggression. Part of my bunny Rucy’s lip had to be sewn back on after Bailey bit her through the xpen. Nasty injuries can happen this way.

2. As far as the check-up, normally they will feel the body for abnormalities, take a look at the eyes, and check the teeth (incisors and molars —unless the bunny is nutty about it)

As far as pre-spay stuff and thing you may just want to ask your vet about, even if you fully trust, but just for your knowledge in this link from the House Rabbit Society – plus it also includes pre & post care.

I asked to have Molly spend the night at the vet’s just to be sure somebody who knew what to do was watching her…I don’t think it is necessary though, and if I remember correctly I think there was a practical reason for my decision as well, which I don’t remember. In all honesty, I doubt that they were checking on her.

Just make sure that she is kept warm.

I have no idea about the poop. They took a blood test on Molly because I mentioned she drank a lot, so they wanted to make sure her kidney was fine before doing the surgery, but from what I can understand that is common procedure for US vets anyways.

It really depends on the clinic if they keep the pet overnight or not- if surgery is done in the morning- the pets are usually ready to go home that afternoon.  There are pros and cons to keeping them overnight.  If they keep them overnight that is another enforced 12 hours (or more) of restricted activity and that helps with healing- bunnies will be more likely to chill and not be as active as they would be at home.  But it is nice to have them at home to be able to watch them- and a loving bunny owner would do just that- and the pet would most likely be more relaxed at home. 

Personally I would have my bunny not spend the night and come home- but I also work at a vet clinic and am experienced in post-op animal care, etc.  But if I was not around to watch them or did not feel comfortable then I would rather the pet stay the night.

I only once have had to take a pet back that night after surgery- about 7 years ago my Golden Retriener that was found as a stray was neutered, I brought him home, we went grocery shopping, we came home- I let him out and he fell over in the yard.  We rushed him in and did bloodwork- that showed nothing wrong- he was started on an IV, given Nutrical (high energy paste) and steroids (I think) and a couple of hours later he was fine and I took him back home.  No idea why he “passed out”.  But he recovered with no ill effects- maybe his blood sugar got too low?  we have the energy paste immediately before blood was drawn.

My vet didn’t keep Monkey over night. Her appointment was for 8 am, the first of the day. I dropped her off, and she was ready to come home around 4 pm. She was definitely happy to be home! There’s no way I would have wanted her away overnight. She’s my baby

My vet had Sammy overnight, if I’m remembering correctly, and we had an emergency in the family so she offered to let her stay another night if I couldn’t get her. I was able to pick her up in the late afternoon of the second day. but my vet boards, so she had a set up already.

you can keep her in the cage, just make sure there’s nothing to jump on, and nothing that can catch on her stitches. Litter box is fine to keep in the cage though

I kept Monkey in the cage even though I had a pen so that she wouldn’t run around much the first few days. Gotta keep em resting to heal up before they can run.

cheapest ive got here is $250 and they dont cover much then second lowest is $375 and again covers more than the other but still.. not alot

exactly!! thats what my mom sais!! i’ll take a pic of the hut outside when i get my camera from school next week… its not tiny.. if you only have 1 bunny in it… but no we had two in it (with a devider).. thank god i finally got my mom to let my bring hershey in!
