I suspected correctly: Jack clearly has an UTI. He drips, he now pees whereever and most of the time he sits with his tail lifted as if he is about to pee. This morning he was sitting like this as well and then started thumping.
I will see if I can get an appointment for him on Wednesday. Anyone who could tell me about the procedure? I’m thinking in regards to how long he should be at the vet (I’m not bringing the others so I hope he doesn’t smell too much of vet afterwards)
Last time Molly was not too happy about him coming back from the vet after his surgery; she was insecure and timid and constantly demanded grooms from Karl and Jack – Jack refused because of pain and so she would chase him around. I was thinking that Molly has in fact been chasing Jack around for the past few days. Perhaps she can sense something is not okay?
Not sure on procedure…
I’ve had both mine treated for suspected UTI. Usually means oral antibiotics. Mine gave baytril which seems is commonly given first. Your vet might try get a urine sample from Jack. I would think a scan (x-ray? Ultrasound?) wouldn’t be a bad idea either. This would show bladder sludge or bladder or kidney stones if any.
ETA: you could take a towel or soft toy that they share in the carrier with him. It might help him smell more normal on his return.
Thanks, Jersegygirl. I should ask for this as well then. I think I will put a towl in the cage today so it is ready for Wednesday then.
I was just wondering – I asked the vet if they kept cats, dogs and rabbits in the same room after surgery et.c. and they do. I really don’t like that. I think it must be traumatising for both cats and rabbits to hear a dog howl or bark. What do your vets do? I really don’t like my vet, but I don’t feel I have any other choice than him.
I think mine do too. I never thought about it when Jersey was spayed. But now I’m more conscientious that they could pick up fleas or mites. I generally think they would have protocols to prevent cross infections and parasite contamination etc. I imagine that would be pretty standard in clinics.
Usually the vet will try to get a urine specimen – if you can get a fresh one from him then that would be good too – one that is not contaminated not sure how you will though with 3 of them. I guess if you use a carrier – don’t put a towel down and hope he pee’s in there. I hate not doing a towel though since they slide all over.
X-rays and ultrasounds might be recommended but they may also just try the urinalysis initially.
I’m not sure where my vet keeps the rabbits to tell you the truth. I figure they would be traumatized no matter what since they are not at home.
I am going through both the UTI issue and the re-bonding issue now.
The only weird sign I seen though was Buzz was drinking double his usual water intake…so they did a urinalysis… which showed a UTI… so they gave me baytril for 14 days and I had to bring buzz back in a week to have another urinalysis done to make sure the baytril was working. Ofcourse when I brought buzz home – him and his sweety started to not like each other and are now currently in separate cages. I just brought buzz back for his weekly checkup on saturday and the urinalysis showed an improvement but -there was a type of bacteria that was still there that could either be normal or indicate something else – so they wanted me to bring him back in another week to test the urine again- which I said ABSOLUTELY NOT! _ I have to drive and hour and fifteen minutes to get there and it stresses him out to the MAX- so they said they could do a culture instead to make sure that this bacteria will go away with further baytril treatments… or if the baytril won’t treat the bacteria- instead of me having to bring buzz back I would just need to go pick up a new medication.
So Buzz went through urnialysis and cultures…
I hope your bunny feels better!! =(
My vet keeps cats in the same room. Though when I pick mine up I get to go in the room and help and I’ve never seen more then one cat in there (kennels are definitely too small for dogs-dogs are down the hall)
Despite that-I doubt that no matter where they keep dogs that they couldn’t hear them. A day at the vet is stressful for most-even the dogs. Could you send her favorite hidy spot-like a willow tent?
Also-how come you are sending her by herself-is it possible you could send them together? I *once* took Kokanee to the vet with Kahlua (when I first started in buns and didn’t know about bonding) -Kokanee came home exhausted (no doubt didn’t sleep a wink at the vet) and Kahlua was ecstatic to see her-you could tell she’d fretted about not seeing her all day. We didn’t have a problem with rebonding or territotialness or anything but I can’t help but think that they were both upset at the seperation.
K&K: Last time when Jack was in for surgery, I had brought a stuffed toy, some towels and some hay for him…did you think the vet took it with him? Not at all. It was so frustrating.
The reason I’m not bringing all three is the fact I don’t have a car. Usually I have to walk 40 minutes with a heavy carrier with the bunny inside. I’ve orderede this one yesterday and I hope it will be here in time:
With this one, I can go by bike and could be there in 10 minutes time. And it can actually carry all three bunnies.
If it gets here in time, do you think I should bring all three? And if he has to stay for a few hours at the vet, should I insist that the vet takes all three bunnies with him?
I sort of think, that it is bad enough for 1 bunny to be taken to the vet, but then also make the two others suffer?
Definitely take all 3. You don’t want to risk a broken bond cuz he smells different when he gets home. For a UTI, I doubt they’ll keep him there, it SHOULD be an in and out thing, with you bringing meds home.
Only 1,5 hour left before our appointment! Neither Jack nor I can wait any longer. I am working from home today and I have spent most of the time wiping up pee. I hope he remembers his good toilet habits once he is okay. And now he has loose stools as well – he is my leaking bunny.
I haven’t figured out yet whether to bring only him or all three. My boyfriend has borrowed a car from work, so I could bring all three. Might do so. Just in case it is something bad.
I think if you have the option of bringing them in a car, then bring all three. In a backpack is difficult for 3, especially if he leaks and it disturbs the other two while in the backpack. But a car can hold one to three carriers, so you may as well.
So nice of your BF to do this for you. I’m sure all will go well today.
