If Sarita is online, I’d like to direct this question to her since she’s worked with these people before:

I have a 45 pound box of 3rd cut timothy that I bought back in November with my other one from KMS. It’s been sitting in my family room, nice and dry, in it’s box since then. I just finished my other box the other day.

Would this hay still be okay to give the buns? It’s been sitting sealed in it’s postal box for three months. It looks and smells okay to me, but how would I tell if it had gotten moldy? Is there anything besides mold I should worry about having gotten into it?

My buns are starting to balk at the bulkier hays I’ve bought recently, so I think they’d like to have something soft to chew for awhile. I’d hate to think I should’ve had this stored somewhere else and it may not be good now.

Our supplier wraps the bales in black plastic garbage bags, but not so tight that no air gets in. Sarita, since you get this hay too, I’m curious how long you store it before disposing of it, uneaten or otherwise.

The other box seemed to be fine all this time, but as I got to the bottom, the quality degraded just a bit. Probably only because it was the hay on the bottom. ^_^

        Many thankies!

we have a horse so i have seen moldy hay before it is like kind of white and the smell of it wants to make you gag. i am not sure about any other sort of thing you should be aware of i just wanted to tell you that.

            Thank you, Mocha.
Yeah, I figured since I had two bunnies go into stasis within weeks of each other, I want to be very sure of what I’m offering them to eat. ^_^

MM, I stock up on this hay and have never ever had a problem – I store mine inside my garage or in my rabbit room closet. I stock up on hay alot too since I never want to run out.

Okay, well…I guess it should be alright then. I just read their site though and it says something about opening the box when it arrives, which I didn’t do. >.< But it isn't all that tightly sealed anyway, so some air must've gotten in.
It doesn’t smell like the other box did, but still has a sweet quality to the scent…almost a spearmint fragrance. So as long as I don’t see anything strange on it, or it isn’t clumping funny, I would guess it’s alright.

I did find more of those funny nettle-like leaves in the other box at the bottom…maybe Fiver or Mimzy got hold of one of those…although I know rabbits are made to digest some hefty plant material, and I usually sift the hay really well to look for foreign objects before feeding it. You can tell they miss it though, since the other bagged hays I’ve been trying to offer are getting turned down more now. ^_^ Picky bunnies!
