So I took Buzz in to get his 2nd tooth extracted today…

Well a week or 2 ago I posted something about how he increased his water intake, but I assumed it was because since I bonded him with Sweet pea he started eating more hay…and thus started drinking more water …

So when I went in today I had her do a urinalysis just to be sure…. well results showed he has a UTI….

Now the poor guy is on baytril for 14 days on top of his other 2 meds… and they want to see him again in a week to check his urine…… unless I can some how get a bacteria-free urine sample from him and bring it to them within 2 hours of him urinating,…. which will be impossible since I live at least an hour away from the vet on a good-non traffic day……

So i have to bring him in again in a week…. and stress the guy out some more….

I also planned to combine the 2 rabbit cages next Saturday on my day off – but it looks like that will be put on hold again so it doesn’t add stress to his already stressful day of going back to the vet …..

Any one have experience with UTIs?   What causes them? How to prevent them? Treating them with baytril?

Baytril is definitely the best to treat a UTI. It’s caused by bacteria. Some animals and people are just more prone to UTI’s.

I guess some ways to help prevent it is to provide fresh water at all times and to keep the litter area very clean as well. Also reduce stress.

Dittoing what Sarita said – Making sure the pen/cage is clean and litterbox is changed on a regular bases does help in preventing UTI’s. Sometimes UTIs can be a result of other health issues going on as well. But many times even with the best care UTI’s can happen – like Sarita said, some are just more prone to it.

I’m sorry, but how long ago was his first tooth extraction? I was thinking that maybe at that time that caused him to drink less – due to eating less (I know he started drinking MORE water later) but before that, just wondering if after the tooth extraction he drank less water which may have contributed to the UTI, then once he had the UTI, the water intake increased. ????

Anyway, what a pain. I’m sorry. I’m just glad though that you noticed this and he’s getting the treatment he needs. Healing vibes!

                THanks guys.
LOL this rabbit has taught me sooo much with all of his little issues. I have had him for 11 months and have spent at least $1600.00 on just vet bills! He is my little sicky.. as I call him.. but worth every penny. In just one year he has gone through 5-7 dentals – 2 tooth extractions…. – ER GI stasis crisis – and now a UTI…. i just hope this is it for him for awhile!

I have like 2-3 litter boxes in the cage (the cage is huge) and I change them every 3 days…. Should I just start doing it daily? What is the best cleaning solution for litter pans? I want to make sure I do whatever I can to prevent another uti…

I think what you are doing sounds fine. It sounds like his immune system was just low after the surgery which is possibly why he caught an UTI. I think if it becomes a persistent problem then you might want to take more drastic measures and also ask your vet for advice.

It’s sounds like your doing just fine I really hope this is the end of the issues for him-sounds like you’ve both been through a lot.

Like Sarita said some people and animals are just more prone to UTI’s. This probably sounds silly but in humans cranberry juice is a natural thing to consume to prevent them. And rabbits love craisins (dried cranberry) it wouldn’t hurt to give craisins as treats, and it just might help You could also see what your vet thinks but craisins won’t hurt (as long as they are in treat amounts)

Buzz loves raisins -I give him like a 1/4 of one lol every day…
                          Maybe he’d love craisins too!
I talked to the vet today and she said there wasn’t much I could do to prevent the UTIs since the anus and the prepuce are so close together- the bacteria can easily crawl into the urethra… but I will keep his toilet extra clean anyways..
I really do hope this is the end of his issues- I take him back in 8 weeks to see how often he is going to need dentals now that they took the 2 teeth out … ::fingers crossed::
