I know I’m pretty late on figuring this out but today I was super excited to buy a timothy/orchard grass mixed bale of hay(40lbs) for $8!  I had been buying my hay from Bunny Lu, which is WAY cheaper than pet store hay, for $1/lb.  I’ve been working on my budget and I need to cut back anywhere I can, which is what prompted me to ask about the hay at the feed store.  The sales man looked appalled when I told him how much I had been paying for hay.  Of course horse owners aren’t going to pay that much for hay, which is why it’s priced so low, and he carries oxbow so I’m pretty sure it just doesn’t occur to small animal people to buy a bale.

I’ll let you know if they eat it.  So far Marshmallow and Digger are wolfing it down.  Zinnia checked it out but had just eaten her pellets and wasn’t hungry.  I didn’t see any of the others go near it yet.

I would absolutely buy by the bale if I had more than one bun. Good job for saving so much money!

I use bales (good quality horse hay) in addition to using “treat hay”.  I don’t want my bunnies to have to eat the SAME hay for 4-6 months- get a different bale and have a refusal- and they seem excited to get the treat hay- eat every scrap of the oat, wheat, etc hay.  And I don’t stress about wasting  money by tossing hay that end up in the litterbox mixed with urine and poo.

I’ve had bad luck with bales and I know a lot of horse people, have tried many different ones. The quality is just not even close to the SunSeed or Oxbow (although Oxbow really sucks lately).

Your lucky…I spend a FORTUNE on hay!

We get ours from a feed store but this last batch had foxtails in it…haven’t seen that before.  Anyone have any experiences w/that?  We used a bit but noticed the foxtails sticking to the fleece, so out that went.  I would imagine for those with flop eared bunz that could be a disaster!  Plus, they could get them up their noses?!  We don’t buy bales, just very large bags for about $6-$8 per bag so it is consistently somewhat fresh .

I buy locally produced minibales-it’s still expensive considering what ‘real’ hay bales cost but it’s convenient to buy. I would love to buy a bale but just haven’t gone looking for someone who will sell one bale I find my locally produced hay is sooo much better then what they sell in the store from pet food companies. It’s soft and green and my buns are hay pigs-which is why I’d love go get around to a bale or two

LittlePuffyTail>have you tried a good grass, timothey clover mix? a good mix of first cut? i used a grass mix with a bit of timothey mix in it and i paid $2.50 for the bale cause i refuse to buy hay from the pet store. they love the mix. i tried a low quality of second cut, less alphalfa, and they didnt care for it at all.

TARM!! That is awsome they like the bale hay!! in my opinion it is better for them not being sealed in a bag put onto a store shelf for lord knows how long when baled hay is stored so the air can get at it and in most cases rain cannot! you will save soooo much money buying bale hay and in some cases i think it is a better mix
