Hi all. So Pandora got spayed two Fridays ago (Jan 29) and I posted because she was slow to eat/drink and very sluggish. However, I got her pain meds, she picked up, and everything was all well. Or so I thought. I checked on her spay incision at least twice a day for the next week. Last Friday, I was concerned because it was still looking a little red, and didn’t look like it was healing really, though I didn’t know if that was normal for one week later or not. Well, when I woke up on Saturday and checked her I noticed the incision had a little pus, so I took her to the emergency vet. They gave me antibiotics to give her twice a day for the next week.

My question is, should I be letting her out to run even with an infected spay incision? It is looking better, not red at all and no more pus. It does look kind of nasty though, like it’s scabbing or something. She has been acting totally normal through everything, and she desperately wants to run around, but I don’t know if it’s safe. I don’t want her to aggravate anything. What do you think? Is it okay to let her out to run around or should she still be resting until she’s done with her meds and the incision is totally healed? She is so mad at me lol.

I would ask the vet- it really depends on what stage of healing the incision is at.  There are also layers of internal sutures- and if the vet thinks those are healed OK then there would be much less worry about stress on the surgery site.

I think you ought to check with the vet as well. But I would say that if it is not red and there is no pus, then it is fine to let her out.

Molly had lots of yellow scabbing as well but didn’t have an infection. The vet just shrugged and said it might be an allergic reaction to be shaved. Hmmm…, although I don’t believe that one, she was fine despite of the scabbing. And she was out and about.

You can also limit her run space. It may be better to be in a low, wide area of your home for a few days first, like a hallway with a soft carpet or a smooth, clean bathroom floor. Just something that gets her exercise, but not jumping or things to catch her incision on or rub and irritate.

I was thinking the bathroom too! Unless your totally loaded-should be a small enough area Just lay down towels Check with the vet though to ensure it’s healing nicely and not infected anymore
