It has been a bit over 2 yrs since sharing my space with a bun, so I may have forgotten this. Vie came to me as a rescue, but I have managed to successfully litter train him. HOWEVER, i notice that he also leaves poops wherever he happens to be sitting, or while he’s bathing, eating, etc. Is this normal?? I don’t remember. Does it just come out spontaneously?
One other thing: I use Yesterdays News. Its pretty much urine soaked everyday enuf so that I need to change litter everyday. Is this normal?
tia
my bun does the same thing he poos leaves right were he is but he still uses the litter box. sorry i can’t help you but i was just going to start the a form about the same thing.
My Bo does the same thing and I do use Yesterday News and it is urine soaked and has poopies in it. I just change it daily, which is a good habit because I have cats as well so it reminds me to change their litter as well. (When I do change it I do leave a small area of soiled litter in it just so he know’s this is where he is supposed to go.)
Not sure about the amount of peeing – I used to use YN and only changed it every 3-4 days. It never seemed to be totally soaked before that (and I only used a very thin layer). Has he been to see a vet for a check up at any point? I don’t think I’d take him just for that, but I’d like to know a vet’s opinion.
Not sure about the pooping – my bun doesn’t do it, and I’m not really sure how you could prevent it. Is he neutered? He may be marking his territory which is more common with unneutered buns.
Yes he has been neutered. It may be getting less, since I cleaned the floor with vinegar yesterday.
Re: the frequent litter changing — this is my first experience with YN so not really sure what to expect. It just feels all hardened like a big mass, so I assume that means its time to change? Other opinions? Or should I just filter out the poos?
Mine are neutered and litter trained, but do occassionally leave a poop where they are sitting.
Re. litter changing. I have no experience with YN, but I have been through almost any other type of litter without success. I was getting crazy changing the litter box twice a day and never finding the right litter type. So when I finally came up with my current setup, I was thrilled. It works wonders with 3 bunnies, so I can recommend it.
I fill the litter box with crystal cat litter, then I cut a “Dry Night” bed mat (for children who wet their bed) in two and cover the litter box with this so there is no access to the crystal litter or the bottom of the litter box. And then on top of this, I pour some wood pellets. So the crystal cat litter is actually of no use, except for one of those days when one of them manage to pee under the bed mat. I change the toilet every 2 days and it is so easy. I just fold the mat and throw it in the bin.
My boyfriend who used to whine about the ammoniac in the air bothering his eyes is completely fine with this setup. No smell, no fuss ![]()
I used to use YN, however, I have switched to wood burning pellets. I find I have to change it much less and it does control odor rather well. i change mine about once a week or so. I have a main litter box in his pen and when he gets run around time, I have two smaller litter boxes in my kitchen . (one on each end) and he uses them. I too have the same problem, he will always still leave around 8-9 poos around his litter boxes and I can brush them up and he will do it continuously. He gets fixed this month and I really really really hope it helps! In his own pen he ONLY goes in his litter box, regardless! It is funny too because if anyone other than family comes to the house…he leaves poos on the welcome rug coming into the house in the kitchen too. We put in a new furnace this weekend and there were alot of things out and about in the kitchen that are not normally there. Nothing could hurt him so I still let him out for his romp time. Boy oh boy did it look like a poo bomb when off!!! I don’t know how some of you do it and take them to hotels, etc…..if he is going to do that every time there is a change, I cannot imagine taking him somewhere completely new!!!! lol

Not possible because of the bed mat…although the pet shop assistant tried to convince me if any of the bunnies accidently ate it, they would spit it right out again. Well, he may have been right, as I have seen e.g. Jack spit food out, but I am not taking those chances. I don’t really know why I have that cat litter at the bottom…I can honestly recommend the bed mat and the wood pellets on top though!
If nothign really geths through to the kitty litter, I’d just stop using it.. lol. Just use the bed mat and the wood pellets. ![]()
