Hi All, I am not sure if you remember us but I was more apart of the forum when I was searching out ways to adopt our bun.  He has been happily with us for 6 months now and we are happy as could be.  He is in very good health overall.  We just went to the vet recently to get some education on nail trimming and she noticed that he has a long back tooth on one side.  We scheduled an appointment to have it filed down in a week and I am really nervous about it.  I had a chinchilla get her teeth done a long time ago and she was a mess for awhile.  Should I be prepared for him not to be able to eat or be in lots of pain?

For those of you who have been through this please let me know any advice you have.  Thanks so much guys

          Hi Samantha!
Yes, my 2.5 year old male Holland Lop, Mimzy has just had this done. Of course he had multiple spurs and his condition had been going on for a long time, plus he went into GI stasis about a week before, so currently we are still trying to get his tummy moving well again and it will probably take us a while to do this.
He also had something that looked like it was forming an abscess on one side, so the doctor has given us antibiotics to control that. This is not helping the tummy, sadly, but it had to be done.
If it’s just one long tooth and he’s in good health overall and doesn’t need any follow up meds, hopefully it won’t be long till bunny is back up and being his usual lovable self again. They do experience some jaw pain either way from what I’ve heard, but if you doctor thinks your bun is uncomfortable, they will probably prescribe some pain meds for you to give him.

Good dental and healing vibes for Escarole! (((((((((((((((((((vibes))))))))))))))))))

Sounds like you have thorough vet! That’s great.

Rucy had to get her molar spurs trimmed a few a times a year. Her mouth would be sore for a few days. Our vet would send us home with pain meds, and I would feed her with critical care the first couple of days. She always recovered quickly – a few days to a week.

The first day after her tooth trim, she would just want to sleep and lounge. I would make sure she got some critical care in her, and observe her for any problems, but other than that, I would just try to keep things quiet and peaceful so she could get good sound rest.

I’m glad your vet is on the ball! My rabbit Pepe is a regular molar trim patient. Like BB his mouth is sore for a few days and I give him pain meds and syringe feed him as needed a few days afterward. I don’t fuss with him for those few days other than giving him the pain meds or syringe feeding as needed.

Let us know how it goes.
