Okay, so I really goofed this morning. I was up early, (well, early for me, about 11 AM) ready to give Mimzy his antibiotic (chloramphenicol) and I noticed he’d left precious few poos last night (nothing too small, there was maybe one that reminded me of his stasis scare last week) so I got him some carrot tops and a little probiotic on them. I get out the antibiotic and pull on my gloves and shake it up and WHOA! I suddenly remembered that the probitics will cancel out the antibiotics if given at the same time and vice-versa.

So that was dumb. >.< How long should I wait to give him his antibiotic now? It has to be dosed every twelve hours, and I need to get it in him soon.

        Many thankies!

I believe it’s the other way around – the antibiotics cancel out the probiotics but it won’t interfere with the antibiotic doing it’s job which is the most important thing right now.

            Sarita has the medical wisdom.

And don’t ever call 11AM “early’ again. Sammy and I get up at 7. zzzzzzzzzzzz

LMAO, thanks Pam, I feel like such a slug now. >.<

Thank you, Sarita. Also, do you happen to know if chloramphenicol HAS to be given with food? I was going to try to mix up some Critical Care today and see if he’ll eat that because he turned down his pellet slurry last night and I wound up having to substitute green leaf lettuce and a few carrot slivers.

ROFL…he’s going to have to get it past me first. Yummmm!!! That’s funny, I’ve been craving Chinese food lately. xD
Thank you Sarita! You’re really saving my bacon here…two calls into my vet and no answers yet. I am really frustrated with them. Thank God for BB.com! ^_^

Don’t feel bad MM. I only wake up before noon or 1 pm if i have a dentist or physio appointment lol. And I try to make those for later on in the day I’m such a night owl… its rare I get to bed before 3 or 4 am these days. Mornings don’t exist in my world! lol

It should be at least an hour or so.  When I had to dose Pepper with chloro-whatsits She got her morning dose with her morning pellets, her evening dose with her evening veggies (both of those smooshed into about a tsp of applesauce or canned pumpkin) and her probi sprinkled on her evening pellets.
