Did he improve any when you tried to cool him down? Is it summer where you live or is this heating in the house that’s making him hot.

Anytime a rabbit is not acting normal like this – it’s time to see the vet.

Could you take him to another non-emergency vet that is open?

They can look for signs of dehydration, take his temperature, palpitate the gut to feel for blockages, listen to his lungs.
If you really think it because he’s too hot, move him to another room, give him the ice block and wet his ears with a cold wash cloth.

As soon as a bunny becomes listless, it’s an emergency. An emergency vet would be able to get fluids in him and do some basics to help get him out of danger. I am worried though because you said he’s been like this for two days? I urge you to seek out vet care asap if he is still acting this way.

Oh, and as a side question — how hot is it in your house and was much hotter just these last few days. (Don’t wait to take him to the vet though to answer this question and wait for a reply — regardless, vet care would be needed, I am just asking to figure out what might have got him to this state in the first place.

How is he doing right now? Will he eat anything, what is his energy level like?

You can try and listen to his gut by gently putting your ear to his stomach and light gurgling should happen about every five seconds. Also, if you are able, look at his gums. If his gums are pale instead of pink, that’s not a good sign. Hopefully your parents would understand being woken up to save your bunny’s life. IF I had children, I would not fault them for waking me up to help them in this case. I know every family is different, but if he is listless, and/or pale gums this is an emergency and my only advice would be to seek a vet asap.

How’s he doing right now?  Is he eating and drinking?   I know you said he was doing that earlier. 

I would call some of the Emergency vets near you and just ask them. Is Mocha eating at all? Will he take a treat? Did you have a chance to look at his gums?

Was the gurgling just sort of a quiet sound? (only can be heard by putting your ear to his tummy or could it be heard by sitting near him?)
If it was the quiet kind, that is a good sign.

That’s good. Will he take a treat from you?  Can you get him to run to you if you have treats?

So when you say he’s just sitting there, does he seem like he has no energy, like something still wrong? If so, I’m sorry I personally know how nerve-wracking this is. I hate for anyone to have to feel that kind of worry. I wish I could give you a definite confident answer of wait or go, but anytime there is doubt, I will always recommend to seek a vet out. And so if something still seems a bit off with him, then my original recommendation  remains the same.

I just now got caught up on your story from another thread you wrote. So your mom finally allowed you to bring him inside? He might still have his full winter coat on (especially since he had been outside)which may explain why he won’t be tolerant of heat so it’s good that you gave him something cold to lean against. And he also got hold of some tarp – How much did he eat?

Well if you saw tarp pieces then most likely he just chewed on it, but if you only saw the tarp missing with no pieces then he may have eaten it.

Well…whew. That’s a good sign. An overheated bunny can be in danger,  and so I’m glad to hear that it “seems” like he’s coming around. I was wondering because, like I had mentioned earlier, he may have a heavier coat from living outside before. (Yeah though that your mother allows him to be inside so far and good work to you for getting her to give it a try)

Keep a close eye and if everything continues to seem back to normal, then just be sure that you leave some frozen water bottles and/or other cooling options, like large ceramic tiles squares, that can help him stay cool when your house gets warm.

HUGS to you and good work keeping a close eye on him and noticing health changes. I also recommend getting a list of Emergency Vets (maybe your regular vet can recommend some) so that if you ever are in this scary position again, you will at least have that part covered. I even have directions to my emergency vet so that will be one less thing for me to worry about in crises. (I’m terrible about directions even when I’m calm)

I understand…it’s late. Try to get some rest. I don’t think you overreacted. Rabbit health can turn very serious very quickly and it’s best to really pay attention, and though sometimes it may end up being nothing, it’s those times that it’s not that it pays to be so aware.

Before you allow him to go free range, be sure to allow freedom slowly – but post that in another thread when you have time.
