Which only adds to my irritation because my horse eats this too and I pay $200 a month for that >_<

Anyway, I started getting bales of hay from my stable for free a week ago. I kept it in a bin (with the lid off because I put a ton in there) for a week. Since I get it for free I’m a bit ladida about it and go through a large flake a week with eight rabbits. I’d say 15 minutes ago I moved it from the plastic bin to a landuary basket for better ventalation and I found several worms at the bottom of the bin when I pulled the last flake out.

Now, I’ve kept horses at my home before and used to work at a horse stable so I realize that there ARE bugs in this stuff. Spiders and rolly-pollys were the most common thing for me to find and what I remember the most, but worms!? EWWWWWWWW. Do not want D: The hay its self was harvested this year, and it smells wonderful still and is probably the best stuff I’ve ever found (bagged, store bought, hay bothers me. I like knowing where it comes from etc.) Putting it in the bin did not cause the creepy crawlies to appear out of no where, I really think it came from the barn.

I THINK, because I can’t really remember, he pulled this bale off the ground though where he stores them. I didn’t think much of this, as it was kept indoors. The worms themselves look like red/brown centipedes and it’s really odd to find them being that we’ve had below zero weather a few weeks ago - wonder if they were just hiding in it for warmth?

The bunnies still love it and a few munch on it before their pellets.
In the first flake I didn’t come across a single insect and I just started on a second and it appeared bug free too..

Has anybody ever come across creepy-crawlies like this? Google has failed me.

…OMG, IT JUST DAWNED UPON ME; THOSE WORMS COULD BE IN MY CAR.

Darn Bugs!  I found weevil grubs in my last bag of pellets, ick.  Could the ones you found be wireworms?

<  These are the grub of click beetles

Apparently wireworms are pretty common in soil and pastures. So it they could have come from where hay was stored if it is wireworms.

            ^ EW D:
They were very similar to that, but looked darker (possibly due to lighting – it was 3am in the morning when I posted &#160.
BUT we do have click beetles here; those I have found in the hay before or at least around it. Just never seen them in grub form.
I guess as long as the hay isn’t being damaged than it’s okay to keep feeding it.
I think I just won’t let him give me a bale that’s been sitting on the ground next time.

And omg I hate when I find bugs in things like pellets D: I had a friend that found a MOTH in her gerbil’s food once.
