Buster’s bum has been stinky — kinda musky since yesterday! My husband calls it an oniony smell! I took a look with the minute she let me do it, and I dont see anything stuck or anything.  Any ideas if I HAVE to clean it or if its dangerous?  I called the vet but I have to wait for a call back.  I am trying to get in there w/a wet Q-tip and clean whatever too. ANy advice? Thanks!

It could be the anal glands, but with a young bunny, they usually don’t get stinky. She isn’t spayed yet right? Maybe she’s stinky b/c of that?

Hmm ok. No not spayed yet. Going at the end of Feb. Thanks Beka!

Talk to your vet about it when she goes in. I think in most cases it takes time for the build-up to happen in the anal glands… and some buns never develop stinky anal glands.

I have an almost 5 month old female, not yet spayed, and she has the same smell. She doesn’t have messy droppings or anything messy on her bottom…so I don’t think it’s a health/GI issue. However, I started noticing it around 3 months when she started showing signs of hormonal changes.. She’ll do circles around me and leave territorial droppings just one at a time as she’s excited and running around and this is when I noticed the smell. So I’m no expert but I think it’s all related. We’re planning to get her spayed sometime in Feb. Hope this helps!

lol. I use that term too – Oniony. I still notice it with Jersey sometimes. I think the terri-poops can smell like that. Combo of those and anal glands working. Luckily it’s not something you smell all the time.

yes, i  have noticed that smell, too, my  bun is neutered so i know its not that. I believe i narrowed it down  to when he eats his evening poops (i forget what they’re called)  b/c the smell is on his breath.
