Do you feed either of these? I just bought some Kale but haven’t given any to them yet. Usually these veggies are pretty pricey but right now are cheaper than Romaine so I want to give them a try. I’m very leery to try anything if there is a warning about it causing gas because I certainly don’t need another case of statis to deal with!!!

I feel guilty though, I don’t really give my buns much of a variety of veg and I would like to expand their menu (I should probably eat some of this green junk too, seeing as though I’m a vegetarian and all&#160

Never tried any of that with my 2..

And I could never be a vegetarian. I’d feel guilty for eating all the bunny food

I’ve fed both, and Leroy loves them! He’s never had a problem with stasis… but… I think he has an iron stomach

As for being a vegetarian… I’d starve. The only veggies I like are cooked broccoli and cooked asparagus and raw carrots. Sometimes cooked green beans and sugar snap peas. But definitely no salad! I find most raw greens too bitter.

My rabbits LOVE LOVE LOVE kale. I just don’t buy it because it’s pricey but I would give it to them more often if I could.

Collard greens they love too – I usually cut it off that thick stem.

I use kale once a week for Pip & Fiver, sometimes twice a week for Mimz, and they seem to love it…but the first two are developing cecal problems after eating it, and Mimzy just went through a semi-stasis scare so I’m not giving him anymore right now.
So either I’m not getting it clean enough, or the kale itself is not as good for them as it once was. For that matter, the bunnies are becoming less tolerant of all veggies and I’m wondering if our greens are getting genetically engineered or sprayed with stuff we don’t know about. At any rate, we’re going down to a hay and water diet for a little bit until they stabilize.

Maybe it’s just wintertime food, but not even stuff for people seems as tasty or appealing these days.

I do a rotation for my rabbits (normally based on availability), they almost always get romaine, and then they get either mustard greens or turnip greens, and then kale or collard. Right now they have both kale and collard, but that is unusual. Parsley, mint, ect they only get in the summer when it is growing in the garden. They love their greens!

Mimzmum, have you tried your local farmers market? Often you can find stuff that is grown organically, though right now I am not sure about a lot of ‘good’ things growing. I know that we still have a little bit of parsley, and I think it is growing, though in Alaska there might not be much…

Right now I think MM’s Farmers Market just sells home grown sno-cones.

Kale is great. Sammy loves it. Never tried collard greens. (hmmm…) Just tried Chicory and she likes that too. But then, she loves old oat hay and seagrass mattes, so maybe she’s a little weird.

Kale is Pepper’s favorite – even over carrots!  She’s not real fond of collards but will eat them eventually if they are all I can afford.  Same with turnip greens.

‘m unemployed so she has adapted to a bit less variety from me – it’s whatever’s on sale.  Usually I’ll get one “bulk” thing that is cheap and that she will eat but it’s that appealing (celery, collards, etc) and 2 tastier things – she adores cilantro and it’s really cheap at the little neighborhood ethnic grocery/

Gulliver & Lainey are pretty spoiled…we have 2 local produce markets that are fairly reasonable so every week or so we restock.  Gulliver LOVES kale & Lainey is fondest of italian parsley.  The shelter we got them from fed them Kale as their greens so it was farmiliar to them since day one.  Ken found some purple kale last summer that he grew & I found some at our farmer’s market last summer too.  We would bring the potted plant in periodically & let them eat away. They also like Basil (we grow TONS in the summer).  We have never used any pesticides in our back yard so they can enjoy the outdoors & our home grown vegis in the summer.  We plan to do alot more this year.  They also like beet greens, orange bell pepper, blueberries, blackberries (Lainey only), carrots, dandelion greens, apples (mostly Lainey), mint, parsnip, broccoli (we grow this too), cauliflower (sometimes), Strawberries, Brussell Sprouts (Gulliver only).  Obviously, the fruits in moderation & same with some of the greens.  Their salads look better than mine!  We slowly introduced each one to make sure they didn’t have any issues and were pretty lucky.  They don’t like the mustard greens, spinach, eggplant, cucumber peels, bok choy, asparagus, melon, pineapple or swiss chard.  Just tried fresh cranberries (2 pkgs for $1.00) yesterday but they only nibbled slighly…good thing it was so cheap!  I like all vegis except parsnips so it was easy to try different types – the ones they didn’t like, I ate !

I love kale and collards and so does buster. I usually eat it once a week, and my vet said to only give it to her every six weeks, b/c of the vitamin k. I was surprised about the 6 week spread, so i’ll ask the dr. about it again. I wish I had a farm to grow all these things. Buster and i eat a lot of the same veggies, its funny.

Denise12:  Check out the House Rabbit Society website (www.rabbit.org) for guidelines on vegis & fruit as well as basic diet information.  Their website has alot of good information .

I give Collards and/or Kale and/or Chard and/or chicory depending on what is cheapest and in stock at my Iranian Market. Today They got a bundle of Kale, and it seems to have been gobbled up, but they prefer Dandelion when it is in. Today, lots of stuff was cheap – 4 heads of Romaine, 2 Big bundles of Dill, 4 bundles of Mint, Three bundles of Italian Parlsey, 2 Bundles of Cilantro, a Treat Bundle of Fresh Fenugreek (!) – and the Kale – all told was 23 bucks. And the Bundles are as big as my hand to get around, so healthy bunches.

If I had to buy in a regular grocery, I am not sure how much they would get, since the little cellophaned packages of Mint are like 2.99!

The fenugreek was a new addition, but everything in gone, so there must have been no objections!

Ditto hehe the produce is for the buns-I get my food in the pre-packages aisle

I give Kale all the time now that Chuck is almost completely on veggies. But they’ve always loved it and done well on it. Collard greens not so well received though my dad likes to boil them and eat them BLECH
For expanding-have you tried raddichio? My buns love it-also I buy those packages of ‘spring mix’ there are like 7 different leafs in it and I can just wash 1/2 a package and feed that with a few carrots and I’m done (in terms of variety)

-I also do red/green lettuce, romaine obviously, broccoli, green peppers, brussel sprouts, parsley, cilantro, endive, escarole -these are all favs but my buns are NOT picky

Have you tried dandelion greens, turnip greens or swiss chard? I know I can usually get HUGE bunch of it for a couple of dollars and it lasts a really long time, plus Felony goes to town, especially on the turnip and swiss chard.

Loki loves kale and collards and dandelion greens! Kale is usually only .99 cents around here for a huge bunch of organic. collards are usually about 1.49 for a huge bunch or organic. So they are always on my list to buy! and today I just found a place that sells dandelion greens!

I tend to take super baby steps when giving my buns new veggies. Like a quarter sized piece at first, once a day for a few days. That’s probably ridiculously slow, I know. How gradual do you introduce new veggies? Like how much for a first time offering?

I’m so leery to upset their tummies, my buns are so sensitive.

Whereas Pepper has pretty much a cast-iron tummy and never met a veggie she didn’t like (at least eventually).  Or for that matter a bar of honey-scented soap, or an herbal conditioner, a tortilla, a mostly-empty glass of iced tea, a cake of blush, or a candle, or a box of chewing gum….

The only things that ever gave her any kind of tummy upset were 1) half a bag of horehound throat drops (my apartment was robbed and thek were knocked to the floor) and 2) a packet of orange-flavored Metamucil (she got it out of the trash, and blew herself up like afuzzy little balloon).

Ihave fed kale and collards- but in addition to their regular “base” of the salad- romaine, greenleaf lettuce.

I feed that small too-just in case-but have introduced so many now that there isn’t much they haven’t had. Apple branches this year were 1/2 allowed before I removed it *shrugs* I dunno seems to be working maybe a little sheltered
