Chloe is 3.5 years old. She has a cage (2 feet by 3 feet) that she LOVES. We usually let her out whenever we’re home (4-10pm and 5-8am). I’ve noticed that even though her cage is open and she can free roam anywhere, she chooses to stay in her cage. She has no interest in toys or chewing. Is this normal? She normally hops around the living room, runs back and forth underneath the couch, and then hops back into her cage where she loves to stretch and sticks her legs out. She’s completely happy inside her cage! Even when we let her out, she doesn’t care to hop around. I’m worried she doesn’t get enough exercise. She loves to eat and we’re very consistent with limiting what she can have and the amount of treats we give her. I’m kind of nervous she won’t be a healthy bunny without exercise…even if she’s not a chubby bunny!

Lots of buns love their cages – it’s a safe place for them to hang out.

That’s pretty normal. I have a maze haven for my bun and he can spend 12 hours a day in there. Even if I physically bring it out to the living room, he’ll run around, then jump back in his maze! Haha. Buns like to have their safe place to lay down and relax and that’s what she’s doing.

Since my bun has these same tendencies, I’ve tried teaching him tricks to get him some more exercise. He loves food, so I get him work for his pellets and it keeps him on the move. Definitely something you could try. Teaching her to stand up on her hind legs would be pretty easy.

eta: I just noticed from your picture that she’s a lop. I have a lop and have read that many lops are very laid back – mine certainly is! So her “laziness” might just be who she is and seems pretty typical for a lop. They certainly don’t seem to have the energy level of a nethie or a mini rex.

My buns were always pretty lazy-more into marathon napping then anything else-since we moved and they have a bedroom they hardly ever come out. On the weekend if I’m up late and Dave is in bed-Rupert will come hang out with me and Mikey. But I leave the gate open almost every evening and they never come out. They are busy sleeping or eating their maze haven or remodelling their stuff

Whew! Thank you everyone for answering. I’m glad she’s “normal”. She gets up on her hind legs all the time because she loves it when I feed her parsley from above. Hehe…I also try to make her chase for her food from a stick. Okie dokie. I guess she’s just a laid back bun.

I also have a lop bunny that is just like yours! I always think she is sad or something because she doesn’t run around much, but she also slops allll the time so I know she must be happy. Every once and awhile she’ll get some energy and do laps around the dining room – she loves running under the table and between the chairs.

I have one active all day Bun (coco) and one that sleeps/hides in maze from about 10:30 am until it starts to get dusk, so about 4 p.m. here right now.
They are both free roam 24/7, so I have to believe that it is simply temperament. I do try to change their environment every two weeks or so to reactivate the dig/explore/chew on appropriate things urge, but Jackson has always been a less “Out and about” type of Guy – whereas Coco is the nosiest thing ever and can not bear to NOT be in the middle of the action all day.

It also can be a change that comes with age. Spockie was a very active young mini rex, but he got noticeably calmer as he got to be several years old. A full adult just likes to be lazy more, so this is natural.

Sammy loves having her cage open all evening. If I am in her room then she will go in there, use the litter pan, munch a bit, stretch out to nap, come out when she wakes up, go in again…The only time she gets upset is the minute I close the cage door. She could have been sound asleep, but suddenly she’s chewing on the bars to get out. So I’ve taken to leaving it open until I go to bed. She’s usually already tucked in by herself.

Dexter is the same way and he’s a lop too. He has a huge condo and full run of the living room, kitchen, and dining room but still prefers to hang out in his condo or his cardboard “house” in the living room. He does do his running laps and binkys around the room and then passes out but that is very rare and he is not overweight at all.

It makes sense b/c that’s where your bun is comfortable. Think of it like people: we have good size houses with multiple rooms, but that doesn’t mean we spend the same amount of time in every single part of our house, or that we even go to a particular room everyday. Most of us probably spend 90% of our time between the living room and bedroom…
