I’m pretty much at the point where I need to try something new with Bindi’s feet. His sore hocks are always a bit red but then they flare up and get all puffy as well. I’ve tried Preparation H and a cream my vet gave me. His cage floor is foam mats and fleece throws. Nothing seems to work but I’ve heard good things about NewSkin. I believe BalefulRegards had a good experience with it.

I read that you put the stuff on, let it dry and it will last a few days to protect the feet. My concern is that he will pick the stuff off his feet and eat it. My book “When Your Rabbit Needs Special Care” reccommends this for sore hocks but doesn’t give much other information.

This is what I used for Coco – and I have to say, as long as the hocks aren’t split or open in any way, I found it to be a very good option.
Her Spots will look very red when I first put it on, but two or so days later, they are looking much more like callouses and not as inflamed.

I tranced Coco and applied it – blew on it while it dried. She was Not impressed with the trancing aspect, she fights it tooth and nail for everything, but once it dried, she didn’t chew or pick at it at all. I got some foot flicks as she disappeared into the Maze. The back part of that hock is a hard one for her to get at anyway, but she was more annoyed at the being tranced that having me put something on her foot.

It does smell quite strong, but that dies down after an hour or so. The best is that the newskin is waterproof, so even if she gets some urine on her foot, or steps in her water bowl, the protection stays put.

I am actually now in the habit of checking weekly and applying some more if her hocks look red and applying some if they look any darker pink than normal. My hope is that over time The callous will return to its normal tough state.

Okay, thanks. I’m gonna try the NewSkin tomorrow. I CANNOT trance him so it’s gonna be hard to put it on and keep him off his feet for 10 minutes. I will just have to take him for a walk around the house.

What sort of flooring does Coco have and does she have a sore hock due to an injury or disability? I don’t know what is causing Bindi’s but I’ve tried lots of different flooring options and nothing has improved the situation.

I seriously feel you on the trancing – I do more of a burrito Hold than a trance, cause I have never fully gotten her to trance. I have appeased her by letting her sniff the lid of the papaya tablets as a kind of promise for a treat to come.

As to why she has ended up with tender hocks…I honestly Do not know. Her litter is Very soft – carefresh and YN and Aspen Shavings. I have rugs on the floor for them because we have hard wood floors. She isn’t overweight and her nails are in good shape. She is free roam 24/7, so I know she is fairly active and moving around

The irony is that she lived in entirely caged filthy cedar litter for a good year and a half – damp, changed once a month or so, never had her nails clipped before me – so The fact that she ended up with sore hocks AFTER rescue is mystifying.

I have been reading things on the internet that it just may be wear from rugs – that it may not be entirely related to what we have known about sore hocks in previous times – I think the hypothesis is that as we learn more about long term living with rabbits we can tell you some of the reasons Why, but not all of them.

My vets other suggestion was a little ace bandage with the cream – and the idea of attempting to get a bandage ON her foot, let alone worrying about it staying Clean? Oy vey. She would have shredded me. Literally.

Good Luck with it tomorrow, May your bunny butt punishment be short lived!

That is a really interesting product, I had not heard of it before. I definitely can agree that it sounds much better than the idea of an Ace bandage, I would think that a bunny would love to try to pull that off.

Juli has pretty bad sore hocks, she was found on the street on the 4th of July so I don’t know what kind of conditions she was living in before, but her sore hocks never really healed.

I’m postponing the NewSkin application until after our Thursday vet appointment. I’m bringing him in for a combo ear/foot check. His ears are all yucky looking again (last time they got all waxy like this they weren’t infected but I still want to be sure) and I’m going to get her to check his feet at the same time and see what she says. Wish us luck at the vet!

Puffy-where are you going to buy it? I’d love to put some in the first aid kit-sounds pretty miracle cream-ish And if you have a store-well us canadians share stores-so hopefully I have one near me too.

(I’m not allowed to shop online anymore… lol )

I got mine at a Pharmaprix, but I’ve seen it at the Walmart too.

My husband cut his finger the other day and we put the NewSkin on it and it worked Great!

K&K – I got mine at a grocery store (don’t know if you have a Sobeys way up there but that’s where I got it) but I’m pretty sure any pharmacy would have it. It’s in the bandaid section.

We had a pretty good vet visit. No ear infection!!! As for his hocks, she saw that they were a bit red and she recommend I only treat them if they start to get puffy. She said they will be red once in a while since he really has no fur there and never will. She advised against the Preparation H I had been using since it shrinks the cells of the skin and she said that would be a bad thing.

As for the NewSkin, she said she just ordered what she believes is a similar product but she wasn’t sure off hand the name. It’s a collagen based liquid bandage. NewSkin is not collagen based so unless I really need to apply something before she gets her new product in, I want to go with the product she recommends which I will buy when she gets it in.

And I got his anal glands done! I wanted to watch her do it before I attempted myself. Bindi was not impressed! Even my vet couldn’t trance him, the little bugger!

My rabbit had REALLY bad sore hocks that even bled, but now they are completely better! I don’t know if this will work for you, but for him, I filled his cage with bedding and changed it immediately when it got wet so his sores wouldn’t get wet. I let him out of his cage whenever possible, so he could rest on the carpet or wherever he wanted. After about a week or so, his sores started improving and fur started growing back on his feet. Soon, his sores were completely gone and the fur totally back. So basically, he just healed naturally! I’m not sure if this will work for you, but it’s always worth a try since all these products could be irritating his feet :/

                              Good luck with your bunny!
