I have to begin this post by saying, normally, Pip is a joy to deal with during things like nail trims and other inspections and she will trance quite easily. Today was an exception.

We’d just gotten done trimming her talons. They’d gotten frighteningly long and I wasn’t about to have to make an appointment to drag her into the vet, I got my musher’s headlamp fixed and figured I could handle it. And so I did. Now I think back, perhaps the headlamp had something to do with it, it had cast a glow on the bed like she was in the exam room, so that might have had an effect on her, mentally.

I had hardly any trouble during the trim. She’d pull her paws in and tuck them under like she usually does, but for the most part, smooth sailing. No blood.

I noticed she was dropping fur, so I began grooming her. I must’ve taken off ten bunnies’ full. (Maybe she is grumpy because she’s shedding?)

So at the last moment before returning her to her habitat, I decided I would look at her bum, she’s been leaving some messy smears on her sleeping shelf because she’s had lettuce lately. So her cecals get kind of mushy, like Fiver’s.

I was just able to ascertain that she had a little bit of smudging that I could smell and probably wanted to wash off her, when, BAMBAMBAMBAMBAM! I got my wrists and backs of my hands raked by her newly snipped claws on her back feet as she kangaroo-kicked me rapidly about five times! I yelped and had to let her go, luckily my daughter was there and saw the whole thing and could grab her to keep her from falling from the bedside, but Pip ran to the center and thumped a few times. When my daughter tried to hold her, she nipped her…which she has never done to her before. Pip showed extreme agitation and I decided she’d had enough. I returned her to her habitat and she ran under her shelf for awhile. A treat brought her back out and onto her shelf, then she laid down, took a LOOONG yawn (that I was afraid at first was mouth breathing, she’d gotten so worked up, her temperature seemed warmer than the other bunnies to the touch) and then fixed me with the worst stink eye I’ve ever seen on her.

I’ve noticed latey she’s been making nests out of her hay. This plus her tantrum and a little recent fur pulling from the neck (which she does on occasion), I’m wondering…is it possible for a spayed bun to have a false pregnancy? Or was she just not into her spa day today?

I’ll add that, when I brought Mimzy out for his trim (after Pip’s), he did rather well and so I let him wander to Fiver’s pen. Normally they snuggle on either side of the bars and wait for pets, but Fiver attacked the cage door with his front feet (I DID still have the headlamp on and maybe when I swung my head around it flashed in his eyes as Mimzy advanced, and that may have startled him) but then he settled in and did his usual tooth purrs.

Oh, and like an idiot, I grabbed the wrong groom glove (I have one for each bunny, so that between washings the bunnies don’t get each others’ scent on them) so perhaps this one smelled like Fiver and that’s what Pip was mad at. She’s had little to no exposure to him. When he first came home she postured to show him that Mimzy was HER husbun. Come to think of it, I used the same one on Mimzy after that, so maybe Fiver caught her scent and that’s why he attacked the door.

Honestly, Pip’s such an easy going bun…I am not used to this kind of behavior by her. I’m hurt! (literally) Is it me who screwed up or could there be something off with her? I’m pretty sure Fiver’s attitude is explanable, he’s high-strung and I’m used to that. But Pip is my mainstay. If she’s got a bug up, I have to take a second look and be sure there’s no underlying cause.

It sounds like she’d had enough of the examinations/administrations for one session and so, as her hind feet were free to do so, she let you know she’d had enough emphatically with those! I’m sorry you had your wrists and backs of hands raked by her claws and it is a temporary rejection of what she was experiencing by you, but I’m sure only a temporary one, and she will be back to you for your petting and massages and maybe showing you some affection back after a minute or two of time to regroup. Buddie was gnawing on the velcro straps at the end of his nylon tunnel and since my shouts of Buddie! No! didn’t make him stop, I pressed my point by stabbing at him with a broom and he growled but then he came to the gate of his pen for petting and grooming as usual and was enjoying my finger massages. You may be right about using one another of the bunnies’ grooming gloves on the wrong bunny. They have very keen senses of smells and can immediately pick up the other one’s scent and cause a reaction which it sounds like it did. You might want to learn from this & avoid the same mistake and and shorten your nail trimming sessions or give Pip a rest before you check her for smudges. And perhaps pick her up so that your hand is supporting her rump and she has nothing to kick. Hope this helps. My first bunny Lash wasn’t spayed and would generate milk in her mammaries which my vet drew from with a needle to test several times until she squirmed and kicked to let her know she’d had enough pricks for one day, thank you. False pregnancy was mentioned.

Some will tolerate being handled and some hate it and really fight it. None of them like it I’m betting. I sort of think Pip tolerates it well normally but she just reached her limit. Also, being a bit touchy with shedding she may have been less tolerant than usual. Mine get really touchy at this time especially it I touch near the bottom.
I think I have heard that spayed buns can also go thru false pregnancy but am thinking that it’s triggered by being round un fixed male though…. not sure. Perhaps it’s all to do with her shedding?

All my rabbits are parked in neutral, Jerz. So there’s no intact male scent here.

I can honestly say, after about 5 or so minutes of being back in her habitat, she was fine. Totally normal. Baffling.

It was probalby just the scent of other bunnies…although she used to love Mimzy…I guess the rebonding will have to start from scratch when the time comes.

You know, I just realized, my hubby put some moose meat in the slow cooker for most of the day…maybe the smell of that helped set her off as well? I’d forgotten how much it stinks while it’s cooking.

My daughter is at it again with the funnies….lol. We used to think Fiver was smitten with Pip from afar…but after tonight I am not so sure.

I think some rabbits are just like that…

As for the hay thing – my neutered male rabbit Mango used to gather up bunches of hay in his mouth like he was nesting – I wondered about it too but he has not done it in a long time. I thought it was kind of cute too.

That could have been the difference MM. Rumball goes a bit funny with cooking smells sometimes.
                  Loving the pics!

That is another question I have…most members here seem to have trouble keeping their bunny’s snoot out of their food when they sit down to eat near them, but I notice my buns get nervous when I’m eating in their presence. (especially if it’s meat) Does anyone else have that problem?
They even seem traumatized when I’ve only got a bowl of salad in front of me… 0_o Or perhaps they’re fuming because I’m not sharing. xD

Pip has been ‘hoarding’ her hay lately. (Even though no one else is there to eat it.) She really likes nestling in it and making a little hollow for herself. I put it there for her to eat, she’s got a beddy to sleep on! 0_0

Well, now I know why moose hasn’t come out of his house all day. He’s hiding from your hubby hehe.

actually, he’s hiding from Monkey… she thumped at him lots today when he tugged too much on the pen wall and scared her. scaredy bun.

Next time, tell hubby cow or chicken is better. lol
