Soo…my poor little Chubsy had poopy butt this morning
I got him all cleaned up but I’m trying to figure out why? His diet hasn’t changed or anything and he’s acting perfectly normal…I’m cutting out treats today because the only thing I can think of is that my family members (who are quite charmed by the boys) gave too many craisins over the past couple of days…should I be worried? Can plain old stress cause that? I’m getting nervous because we have another long car ride on Sunday + a stay at my grandma’s + a stay at a hotel + finally moving to my new place…I’m worried about them!
Too many treats can definitely cause poopybutt. I would just ask other family members to not feed any treats. If they like to feed Chubs, then let them feed greens and herbs – healthy stuff that you know Chubs likes.
Stress can also cause poopybutt, but from the sounds of it, too many treats are the most recent culprit. Just makes sure to keep him on a stricter healthier diet right now especially since there will be some upcoming stress. And if he does not return to normal over the weekend or worsens, then you would need to have him seen by a vet.
Is he eating?
Keep us updated.
I think the culprit was deffinitely too many treats…Comet had a mild case too. Poor guys. Family have all been advised. If they want to feed them, there’s plenty of veggies in the fridge or they can give an extra pellet or two. No more craisins or apple slices! They both seem perfectly fine, chowing down as usual so I am not too worried…except for the stress I know is coming in the next few days. Still though, I’ll keep a close eye on them both! Thanks Binky
That’s not uncommon for family members who have been sucked in by bunny cuteness to over do it, and when bunnies start begging…well, it can almost be irresistible to stop, but I am glad that they have now been informed so they can avoid becoming overcome by the power of bunny persuasion.
It is good that they have each other as that will help with the stress, and IF you are able, try to keep their cage/pen arrangement the same – even if at all possible along a similar positioning in each location. Do you have them in a pen or cage at each place?
Here’s the thing
they got in a fight the other day, and I actually have them separated right now too (details in their bonding thread). I think all the stress made them edgy and so after 2 weeks of getting along so well, they got into a fight and were aggressive when I tried to have a date later. So…that makes traveling even harder. They aren’t aggressive through the NIC grids, just when they are directly together…so for the card ride, I’m using their “pet store cage” as a carrier and using the grids to make a divider. (I’m hoping the car ride might make them friendlier again too…and for when we get there, I will use the NIC grids to make side by side pens. Then we’ll kind of play it by ear once we’re in the new place, as far as being together. But they will have lots more space again (which has been difficult at my parents because of the dog). The up side is that it will be totally neutral and quiet after moving in, with just me. I don’t start my new job for a couple weeks yet so we’ll have some time to work on re-bonding. So…they just need to get through the next few days and then it will be nice and quiet and slow paced for a while so they can settle in again. Poor guys…I would never ever give them up but I sure hate dragging them half way across the country with me! Think they’ll be okay??
They should be fine once they’re in the new home and settled ![]()
Okay, I just got caught up with your situation in the bonding section. I wish I could get to that section more often. By the time I hit the priority top two sections, I’ve been on for hours reading and answering posts.
What a challenging situation you have been dealing with! Hopefully the car ride will really help. Normally that does, and so hopefully the longer ride will help solidify in a good start by the time you get to your new place.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Keep us updated.
P.S. -on a completely different note – I also just saw your post from back in November regarding worried about a lost order. Though it came in just fine – if you ever have any concerns don’t hesitate to email via the contact us section at the bottom of any site page. Though I try to check the board on my off days, I am officially on the board Tuesday, Friday, Saturday. So in regards to store questions you’ll always get a faster answer via email.
I just want to add that members of my family, when cautioned about treats, still got suckered in. But they would sneak treats when I wasn’t looking.
So you may have a bit more reaction. I suggest you have the family that slips the treats help you with cleaning any more poopy butt. ![]()
Well hopefully the new place will help bond them and the car rides. So that is something positive to consider.
If it doesn’t clear up then you will want to do a fecal test. I just had one on Giselle because she wasn’t eating as normal and her poops weren’t right either and my vet did a fecal and said it was clostridium which I guess affects some animals different from others and we are treating with benebac and metronidazole so that could be something to consider as well. So don’t rule out doing this if it doesn’t clear up.
Grace got some poopy butt the past couple days because we had bunny sitters take care of the buns, and she apparently didn’t like that they didn’t give her brand new hay every day! They gave her quite a bit on the first day, and since she didn’t finish it all, they left it in, and apparently Grace likes the hay to be fresh every day. So she had poopy butt for a couple days because she was eating less hay, but her normal amount of veg and treats. Now that she is back to a normal amount of hay her poops are gradually getting better, but they did not improve over night, so it might just take another day or two. As Sarita said, if it doesn’t clear up then it would be a good idea to take her to the vet.
Whenever anyone comes into their room (strangers or not) my 3 little beggars act as though they have not been fed in ages and sit up and beg for treats….it would almost be pathetic if if was not so darn cute! ![]()

They can be such beggers hey? Rupert has taken to clawing my leg to get my attention while I’m tending to Chuck-he want’s me to stop and give raisins. Kahlua just stands up and begs (its almost sad) whereever she is if I come in the room-she doesn’t know I need to be close to her to give her a raisin *sigh*
It’s hard hard hard to not give treats.
If the poopy bum is still a problem-lots more hay (you can even reduce pellets a bit to get them to eat more hay-in rabbits MORE fibre equals less runny poops) and maybe stop any bonding events until you get it all sorted. It sounds like your in the middle of a move-or just moved? I’d definitely give them several weeks to settle in before doing more bonding-pain I know-but moves can be stressful to them ![]()
I was VERY embarrassed by a recent episode of poopy butt. I came home from work the Mon bf Xmas and found the living room floor covered w/ tufts of bunny fur. Chewbacca escaped from her converted storage room to engage in bunny battles w/ the daytime free roamers, Leo & Jessica. As I was investigating for injuries, I discovered some serious poopy butt on Jess & Leo. I had been really sick the week b/f and hadn’t been spending much time w/ the pets, since I was in bed for a week. I felt so bad that I had let it crust onto them. It was obvious that I hadn’t been keeping an eye on them. I had to do some fur trimming to get all the old poops off.
DH is the treat culprit in our house! Jess & Leo are major beggars and expect their treats in the morning when he is getting ready from work. Turns out that he has been just putting the treat box on the floor, while he was getting things done b/f work. OMG!!!! DH then gets a spanking and he stops over-treating them…but occasionally he just lets it go too crazy! I thought I was a sucker!
