Well just like people…dewlaps come in every size/shape/color.
I’d lve to see some on other buns!
Here’s Sunny’s..
My friend said my Bun has a double chin! I said “no you dunce! That’s a dewlap!!!” (Remember when I first got her and freaked out because I didn’t know what it was either and called it her beard? lol)
what exactly is a dewlap?
Momo’s baby-lap. I have little doubt that it will grow! When she eats carrot, her dewlap turns orange

what exactly is a dewlap?
It’s just a flap of skin that hangs below the chin on some female bunnies. I’ve heard that when pregnant, the female will pull fur from that area to make her nest.
Dewlaps are mostly on female rabbits so that it provides another place from which to pull fur for a nest! Also, that extra fat helps during pregnancy and nursing.
Plus, they’re funny and CUTE!
Oop! Barbie already answered : D
Meadow’s started to grow when she was about 6 months old, but since she was spayed right at 7 months, it stopped (and actually shrunk back…)
oh wow! That’s wild. I wonder if Mo’s will disappear too.
pinky’s has definitely gotten smaller since she was spayed. its not totally gone but it’s not pronounced (like in her pic above) at all now.
wow that first bun has a very large dewlap.
The white bunny looks so proud in that picture
I don’t know… is she spayed yet, Lizzie? Once it gets a certain size, it stays, or shrinks a little bit. You’ll see them a lot in girls who were spayed when they were older (like babybunsmum’s Pinky) and of course in unspayed females.
(To be honest, I was happy when Meadow’s disappeared. I really don’t like how they look. And as a mini rex, it was very, very noticeable on her b/c she’s so small…)
Yeah, she is spayed… got it done ASAP, haha!
No I’m pretty sure males don’t get them… there’s no need for them to have a dewlap since the boys aren’t the ones making the nest… Leroy’s never have one and he wasn’t neutered until he was a year and a few months old at the shelter.
Hehe Monkey never had a chance to grow hers
Our first bun, Trixie, had a pretty large dewlap. She would actually trip over it from time to time.
Hmmmmm My only bun with a dewlap (though Noot is heading there sharing Chucks special diet) is Rupert-my boy…. lol I’m sure only female or fat rabbits should have them-so umn….let’s not tell Rupert the bad news
Rupert is so cute with his little dewlap tho *snugglesnuggle*
OMG Rupert! He’s so cute ! His dewlap is so Teeny Tiny but sooo adorable!
i LOVE that last picture of rupert! my doggie jake has a fatty tumor on his chest- my mom pointed out today that it looks like a dewlap!
I dont ‘care for the really really large dewlaps either. Ruby doesnt’ seem to have one. Just a bunch of lionhead hair there.
Fat males get little dewlaps
Yes Ruperts is cute
thats funny trixie would trip over her dewlap lol
Plum Bun and her “beard” lol.
*snuggles Bun* she’s so pretty
Cute pics!
Olivia had a “rupert-ish” dewlap when we first brought her home as she was unspayed and overweight but it’s pretty much gone now. My bf called it her “turtleneck”.
Marshmallow’s dewlap it is quite a bit smaller now that she isn’t overweight
Omg @ Lintini, her’s is so cute and miniature!! Just barely drags the ground, LOL!
Great thread and pictures!! As for males having these….well I sort of think Rumball has a dewlap that wraps around his entire body. Very noticable when he is loafing. And obviously Rupert has proved that bucks can have them too. A beerlap perhaps?
Awww Marshmallow’s so cute!
Marshmallow is so CUTE!!!
Frankz – we have twins!! but Bun is tiny!
Lol jersey, a dewlap that goes all the way around Rumball? hehehe
Bahahahh thank you -I will tell Rupert he is not getting judged for his tiny dewlap Chuck has a ‘skirt’ but thank goodness for it during illness-and umn-it’s also adorable
Nova had one after she started to put on weight. I realize now that she was soooooo thin when I got her, and if she hadn’t been pregnant she would have looked like she was starving. She should have looked more like this when she was pregnant, but she kept her dewlap for about 6-8 months after her pregnancy and weight gain. I think the spay might have gotten rid of it. If Eclipse gets one, well then I know she is fat! The first two pics are of Nova with her lap, and a more recent one now that she lost it.
Nova is SO adorable, with or without her dewlap!
*snuggle snuggle* Nova is so pretty!
*bunnynaps* hehehe
ok so every breed gets these right? female tho shelby has one its so cute !!
omg i thought i was the only one!…i called it a double chin haha. so what is a dewlap?

is only on females???in that case my bunny that i have had for 3 years is not a boy oh snap!!!He/or she has a giant dewlap lol!
Some boys do get them, but thats usually a sign they are too chubby Just ask Rumball and Rupert hehe.
uh oh haha he must be chubby lol! is that bad???
that is weird it posted it 2x
Depends on how chubby I suppose. If your bun really is a boy, and has a huge dewlap, it may be time to change his diet a bit. How sure are you that its a boy?
well if he’s a boy you’ll be able to see his testicles after 3 years. if they arent obvious when he’s on his back then he’s a she!
Male bunnies might get a small one if they are overweight (like the pic K&K posted of Rupert) but it’s not going to be the “full pillow” like Sunny, Pinky, Marshmallow, and some of the other girls have who are either unspayed or were spayed later in life.
How big is your bunny’s dewlap? Has she been seen by a vet for a general check-up at any point while you had her? Have you had plans to neuter?

Speaking of which, I looked behind my desk and Sunny’s sleeping on her ‘pillow’ right now.

It looks very simalar to the white rabbit on the first page posted by babybunsmum .No,i can not afford check ups .Yes i am in fact looking for a place to get an appointment and see if the price of checkups lowered or highered .It might be that he is a she but I will find out today. Will a unfixed male bunny have a bigger chance of having a big dewlap?I feel like a bad bunny mama
No, you’re not! I don’t think altering makes a difference whether a male will have an enlarged dewlap or not since it’s not hormone related.
ok…I cant seem to find a place for Frappichino so he can get fixed.
Here is Arduina’s:
And all stretched out
Frapp, where abouts are you, we can help search for a vet in your area
monkeybun what information should i give you?Oh and he/she does not lay on his back….so i dont know what else to do
just general area info, state, town. then can help hunt for vets easier than say, looking at a list of all the vets in the states hehe. you can PM me if you dont fell comfortable posting it where everyone can see your info.
it doesent bother me.
Winchester,Ca 92596
Well, I didn’ find one in Winchester, but there was one in Hemet that does exotics.. http://www.buenavistapetclinic.com/home.nxg its about 15 -20 minutes drive from where google maps put me in the middle of Winchester, so its not that bad of a drive. depending, of course, on where youa re in winchester. i’ll keep looking, see if i cant find another as well.
