And he’s neutered! He’s been neutered since… the end of June 08.

So this is a strange observation/question, but sometimes Leroy starts smelling really bad… I’m not sure how to describe it…  it’s pungent, and kind of musky.  I’ve only smelled it occasionally, and the smell only lingers a few seconds.  Sometimes his litter box smells like it.  Usually, when I notice the smell, it’s when I’ve been bugging him – holding him for nail trims or when I pick him up against his will for snuggles.  Anyone have any ideas why?  Is this just a remnant behavior from when he was intact, similar to a dominant spray?

Have you checked his anal glands at all? That might be it… or, maybe he’s farting >.>

Hehehe… maybe hes farting on me when he doesn’t like what I’m doing… Anal glands… yeesh.  I actually kinda forgot about that… *points finger at self “bad bunny mommy! “*  I’ve tried, but I can’t check and clean his anal glands and hold him at the same time and I have yet to find a willing volunteer.  It’s a struggle to get my sister or my bf to just hold him for nail trims! (And I can’t trance him – he won’t stay still).  I think I’ll call the vet on Monday and see if they’d be willing to do them for me!

if the smell is sort of onion/b.o. like, sounds like territorial poops.

Yes, that’s it, onion-y/b.o! Ick. But no poops ever came out – at least none that I’ve seen when he was making that scent, so I never thought it could be territorial poops…

I would volunteer the vet, for a price, to check the anal glands.
Ask her about his smell while your there, and see if she thinks it the glands, farting, or poops. Unless she thinks it could be something else. I first thought of cecals.

Jack does this too. It doesn’t last long. I think for him it’s two things. Bunny Fart (lovely) and when he gets in a territorial or hubba hubba mood with Vivian, I think it’s just him getting his anal glands geared up. You know all that residue that is in the glands, well, I think he is just excreting a beautiful aroma to let everyone know he is boss, and if he mixes that scent with some “honking” noises – then I think he thinks he’s making himself more attractive for Viv (nothing like some cologne and a song for his lovely gal) Doesn’t really sweep her off her feet, but he tries. And in the meantime, I think…Stinky Jack!

I shouldn’t laugh BB – but my Jackson has this same behavior. I sometimes smell that Musky “eau de Bunny Love” – when he is making the soft honking noises and looking hopefully at Coco.

He never gets too far with her, but I think it must be some residual Male behavior to let his lady love know that he is in the mood.

                          Poor Boys. so hopeful.

LOL- too funny! I’ve noticed that BunBun gets that odor, perfectly described by Katie, btw, when he’s getting all aggressive and tearing up the couch. He really works himself into a frenzy, digging and tearing pieces of cushions off with his teeth, and boy does he stink! I must say I’m relieved to think it’s just his anal glands, cuz I was beginning to wonder if he was digging himself a hole in the couch to hide and work on his cecals in private- ewww. BunBun is very messy with his cecals sometimes, especially after he has begged too many treats during the day.
So it must be when the are feeling especially “manly” that they produce such aromas… the male thought process is a fascinating thing.

I’ve smelled a weird smell coming from Sunny for a quick second and it’s gone–but it seems like everyone here has the problem with a boy!

Yes definitely can smell like a skunk-I think it definitely has to do with anal glands…they are there for a reason-so my thoughts are when they want to scent -say doing a love dance-they let off that smell from the anal glands? Since I started cleaning regularly-no smell But something to have the vet show you how to do (or do for you if you aren’t comfy-they are gross and if you don’t do nails yourself-well same thing )
