i seen a few posts where people have said that rew have sensitive eyes. i was wondering if a red eyed white is a rabbit that is all the way white or if it could be a bunny that has red eyes and is white but also has other colors. my charlie has red eyes but he also has gray on his ears, nose, feet and tail. the rest of him is white. would this make him a red eyed white? if he is one, is there anything i need to be concerned about as far as his eyes? can he not see good or will he have a chance of being blind when he is older?

Any red eyes. I think Red Eyed White is pretty much a generic term since you are right that many rabbits with red eyes may have some dark shading such as Californians and Himalayans.

No, there’s no chance he will be blind when older. They are just more photosensitive.

they tend to scan too.   My REW Ruby doesn’t scan   but Cotton my blue eyed one scans by bobbing his head up n down when I hold him.  He looks like he is saying yes and being very agreeable.

Some REW scan by moving their head slowly from side to side trying to gauge the depth perception of objects/

They may be more sensitive to bright lights or sunlight in their eyes.  I know Cotton is but he isnt’  a REW.   Ruby her eyes are sensitive to bright light and direct sunlight.  Just like Cotton

No to them going blind.   It wouldn’t be cuz of REW coloring

I’ve read that rabbits, or any animal with red eyes, should never be in direct sunlight-it can harm their eyes.

I have a red-eyed white, and she does the scanning that BunnyTowne mentioned, whenever she stands still it looks like she is swaying from side to side.

Rabbits scan by bobbing their heads about because they are far-sighted. Even dark-eyed buns will do it. Some just do it more than others, light-eyed ones also take longer to adjust to lighting, and depending on the environment they’re in, a rabbit will scan when presented with new things/surroundings.

All light-eyed buns (blue and ruby) are more photosensitive and should be protected from white light (sunlight and artificial). Certain abnormalities, such blindness and deafness, turn up with higher frequency in those rabbits bred for a specific recessive trait such as albinism (REW).

edit: Sometimes you hear of a blind REW because that rabbit was blinded by bright light which damaged the sensitive eyes (lab rabbits are often kept in halls lit with very bright lights and meat rabbits kept outdoors can be blinded by the sun)

Yes, its extremely difficult to get a picture of her with eyes open or not glowing. I also face all lights away from her cage in my room so it’s easier on her.
