So this morning I noticed in the living room a redish wet spot on the floor (I don’t know if it was still wet, but it was caused by something liquid) The night before Marshmallow had been sitting there and looking around. I didn’t notice if the spot was there before I put him back in his room at bedtime. I don’t know what else the spot could be from besides him.

He is acting normal, eating fine, hopping around fine…  Is this something to be worried about? He has never peed outside of his litter box before, and I don’t think I have ever noticed it to be that color before, though that is hard to tell with the litter that I have.  Is there other things I should look for or check for to see if something is wrong with him? I was just so suprised. He is fixed, has been for a year. There hasn’t been anything new to his environment except the Christmas tree, which he seems to really like and it has been up for a couple of weeks.

Any insight would be helpful! Thanks!

Well rabbit urine can range from white to orange to red to brown. I don’t think one spot would be something to worry about but if he continually urinates in places other than his litter box (if he’s usually consistent with that) then you may want to take him to the vet to see if he has a urinary tract infection.

Actually if he was nibbling on the tree, that could change the color.  I can’t remember where I read that or why I think that, but I am almost positive that it’s just a harmless color change due to that.  I’ll try to find some sources for what I’m talking about.

Edited:  Okay I just found this with a quick google search

Yeah, red urine comes from pine trees, carrots, spinach and other greens containing betacaroteens. Antibiotics and the first day with cold weather can cause it as well. Also, most normal urine turns dark when it oxidates and looks dark orange or red.

It is absolutely harmless and should not be confused with bloody urine, which is completely different – and rarely visible to the eye. If you see drops of blood, you should always call a vet.
