since ive just been lurking on here and not really posting i will introduce myself. im kim and i have 2 male bonded bunnies. charlie is a mini lop mix. he is about 5 months old. jack is a dwarf hotot mix. he is about 4 months old. neither one of them is nuetured yet. we are waiting on jack and going to have them done at the same time. i got both of them from a pet store in november about 2 or 3 weeks apart. i was clueless that i would need to bond them and have since learned alot about putting 2 male bunnies together lol. they have their separate cages for now but they are getting along great and play together everytime they are let out. in february when i have more money im going to build them a nic condo and house them together. these are the only rabbits ive ever had. they were originally going to be a xmas present for my little boys but i couldnt wait to get them and caved. now im trying to share them with my kids haha. ( i might be a little stingy
)
well anyways shortly after i bought charlie he started sneezing and coughing. doing this sort of snorting thing. i suspected he had pasturella and started looking for a vet. to make things short he went to 2 diff ones starting about 3 weeks ago and today i finally found a real “rabbit” vet. the other 2 were clueless. i took him in today and after some x rays we found out that he has fluid in his chest, not in his lungs. his bronchial tubes are irritated. he is on baytril and a diuretic. we go back in 7 days to see if he is improving. he is fine in every other aspect. eating, drinking, pooping, peeing, playing, etc. no discharge from his nose or eyes. he looks fine.
i was wondering if anyone else has experienced the fluid outside of the lungs or the irritation. she said his lungs are probably inflamed and causing the fluid.
i was also told that rabbits shouldnt have pellets. she said give about a tsp?? i think thats what i heard. i understand about the alfalfa and the calcium and kidney stones but isnt timothy based pellets ok? im also having a prob finding timothy based here in iowa. am i going to have to buy them online? if he only has hay and vegetables then i was wondering how many vegetables do i give him a day? he is a little over 3 lbs and jack is about 2 lbs.
has anyone had problems with their bedding being dusty or causing their bunny to sneeze? i am use critter care. its pretty much the same as carefresh just cheaper. anyone know of any alternatives that they have found to work for their bunnies? when i build the nic cage thankfully they wont need this kind of bedding and only litter, but until then i want to try to helpo charlie so he isnt breathing in all this dust. i know it cant be helping his poor lungs.
im sorry that this is so long. i would appreciate any advice. thank you.
kim
Welcome Kim!
How are they boys with their litter habits? I’m wondering if you can do away with the bedding altogther. Alot of buns do well without it and it can help with litter training to have no bedding as they can confuse it with litter. You can put down some fleece for them instead. If you do prefer to keep the bedding, perhaps a layer of hay on top will help keep down the dust.
It sounds as if you found a good rabbit vet. Good to hear Charlie is receiving treatment now. Do you know what the diurectic is for? Your vet has good advice about pellets. Mine also promote pellet free diets though it is tricky to do once you’ve already introduced them to pellets. They do love them. A good quality tim pellet is better long term and should be given in a limited amount. As you rabbits are young, they can be free fed. I think the concern is pellets started to overtake what should be the main part of the diet – Hay. They should really only be used as a supplement to a diet of hay & veg, rather than being the main staple. If they are not used to veggies yet, just introduce them slowly. Start by giving a leaf of romaine lettuce or some parsley. In their adult diet you can give 2 cups/day.
Welcome 🙂
Good to see another Charlie around
I really don’tknow anything about this but Mimzmum’s bunny has had a lot of trouble with sneezing so she might have some advice for you.
My buns dont have any bedding and I think most people here wouldn’t have litter any where other than the bunnies’ litter trays.
I guess they’re inside rabbits? Are they toilet trained yet? It can be a long process before they’re neutered
so my Charlie was only semi-toilet trained before he was neutered.
Welcome to Binkybunny!
It sounds like you are well informed and have a good vet, which is great. I have not had experience before with fluid in the lungs, but I am glad you got Charlie to a good vet because it sounds like he needs some help. I do have a bunny that sneezes, and it is likely pasteurella, but she has not had issues with fluid in the lungs. If he is playing, eating and pooping normally that is a good sign, so hopefully you can find the root cause of the issue soon.
Timothy based pellets are definitely best, but I do agree with your vet not to feed too much. I use timothy based pellets and give mine about 1 tablespoon per day. I noticed that Petsmart started carrying the Oxbow Timothy pellets so you may want to check there to see if they have them, those are the ones I use.
As far as bedding, I use “Lonestar Bedding” or “Equine Pine” – this is a pelleted type litter which is actually designed for flooring for horse stalls, so it is very cheap, and can be bought by 50 lb. bags. It is important to note this is different from pine shavings, which are kind of questionable when it comes to bunny health, and probably wouldn’t be good for a bunny with lung issues. These are like woodstove pellets, tightly compacted and baked, and then they absorb urine. I would imagine this would be good for a bunny that could be irritated by loose stuff flying around, because they are compact, and only expand when wet.
Hi, Kim,
They sound like sweet bunnies and your plans for them are great. Of course, we can only judge if we see pictures – many many pictures.
I have never used bedding, just litter in a litter pan. Even when Sammy likes to sit in her soft cuddle cup to eat, she prefers to lie down on the smooth plastic cage bottom to sleep or rest. She wouldn’t even lie on a piece of fleece after her spay, so many bunnies are just fine with nothing on the flooring.
I agree with Moo about the pelleted litter. I use Aspen pellets, which are also safe and some consider even safer than pine.
Petsmart does sell Oxbow’s Bunny Basics T, timothy pellets for adult rabbits. But I found here that the markup is so high that it cost nearly the same to order it online, plus I could order other things shipped with it. A 10 lb. bag will last quite a long time with a very small daily amount.
Thank you so much for your advice! i think im going to try those litter pellets. i was looking around yesterday and found a few different kinds. has anyone used yesterdays news for bedding? i found some timothy pellets yesterday too. this girl in the pet store told me that if i didnt use pellets with alfalfa that i should give my bunnies some alfalfa hay. do i need to do that? am i supposed to be giving all different kinds of hay or is it fine to just use timothy?
charlie is going back to the vet on monday to see how he is doing. he has started getting more of a clear discharge and sneezing alot more with the hacking sound now at the end of the sneezes. he is still eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and playing. i hope that he starts to get better. ive been keeping a close eye on him. he is such a good boy and i feel bad that he is sick.
ill have to figure out how to put pics on here. do i need to put them in photobucket first or can i just take them right off my computer?
sorry it took me so long to post back but my internet has been messing up. i typed out a big reply the other day and when i hit submit i realized i wasnt connected to the internet anymore ggrrr!!
the diuretic is for the fluid thats outside of charlies lungs. charlie is slowly being litter trained. for the most part he is good but sometimes i find pee in random parts of his cage. he doesnt pee on our carpet though so thats good. im expecting it to go better once he is nuetured. jack is litter trained but pees sometimes on our carpet by charlies cage. i think its a territory thing. and neither one of them keeps poop in the litter box. when i brought jack home a few weeks ago it seemed as if they started this poop competition outside their cages but slowly they are getting better with keeping in the cage atleast. both of the bunnies have had veggies and are doing great with them. ill have to try and stick to the 2 cups. sometimes i think i go over that. no runny poop for either of them though.
oh and i was wondering….what the heck are craisins? are they just dried cranberries? im not a fan of cranberries or raisins so im a little clueless. ive seen that alot of bunnies like them as a treat. what kind would i get? does it actually say “craisins” on the bag?
thanks again!!
kim
craisins are dried cranberries, yes. My Monkey bun loves em! She also hated alfalfa hay when she was little, so my vet said timothy hay was fine from the beginning, if she refused alfalfa. At 6 months-ish he said she’d be having to switch to timothy hay anyway, as alfalfa isn’t good to feed to adults as its too rich or something like that. But for babies and nursing mamas its good.
You can post pics right off your computer, thats what I do on here. Just gotta resize them first so they aren’t too big ![]()
Welcome!! Wonderful you found a good vet
Yesterdays’ news is great to use
It says it’s flushable-but that’s in small amounts-don’t make the same mistake as me
For photo’s -any photo program (like photobucket) that gives a photo a URL will work-and you have to use the full reply ‘add reply’ not the quick reply to do it ![]()
thanks i posted pics in the lounge. ill have to pick up some craisins and see if they like them. i tried to give them raisins before and they turned up their noses. they dont like banana or pineapple neither.
kim
I found Monkey has to be given something a few times before she’ll actually decide if she likes it or not. I had to give her raisins for a week before she decided she’s in love with them. Now she dances for them!
All buns are different, some like certain things for treats, other will snub it! Try little bits of this and that and you’ll figure out what they like best! Like Monkey said, for adult buns you want to feed timothy pellets exclusively along with grass hay (timothy, orchard, oat, brome, meadow). Alfalfa is for babies, nursing mothers, and sometimes senior buns (over the age of 6). In my experience, pet store employees *usually* mean well when they give advice, but they don’t know all the ins and outs of every single type of pet. It’s good that you’ve come and asked us.
