I’m 80% sure that it’s just Archie that’s doing this.  We have a giant window in our living room and have cloth curtain panels to close them up.  We’ve had them for awhile; almost a year (replaced the noisey vinyl blinds).  Well I was talking to my mom the other day and Archie was behind our recliner while Gracie was in her cage.  I’ve seen them nudge the curtains before (especially Gracie) but I went to check on him and he was EATING the bottom of the curtain!!  And he had been doing it before because there was 5 inches of the one panel that was chewed on the bottom.  I was so mad!  He went straight to his cage and no more out time for the rest of the night.  I let them out again the other day while watching them when they were behind the recliner (couldn’t see it before since it’s behind the chair).  I take my eyes away for one second and I look over and see the curtain moving and then being pulled….it was Archie again (Gracie was to busy cleaning herself from her foot bath).    I scolled him and he went in his cage and sulked.  I love the little guy but what the heck?! It’s like he just discovered them.  They’re brand new and were a bit expensive too!  My mom is going to take a look at them to see if she could hem them up so we don’t have to buy another panel (if they still make them).  So if they get fixed it will still be high enough for him to lift his head up and chew on them.  What do you think I should do?  I think it’s decided that with our tax money we are going to try to finish the basement and move them down there because of the curtains, them trying to always chew the corner of our new recliner, and Sandy trying to get into everything.  I really love them up here and don’t care for the layout of our basement and also it’s so cold down there (not for them, just for me).  But hopefully we can work out something until (if we ever) build our own home with a special bunny room for them.

Is there weights or wood in the bottom hem he’s attracted too? All I can think to do it rub a dry cake of soap along the back of the hem…maybe then they’ll avoid them. Or provide a distraction behind that recliner like a phone book or cardboard box. It sounds like it’s a favourite hang out spot.

No wood or anything, it’s all material.  It’s just weird how he suddenly started this now.  It was cute when Gracie would nudge it but chewing isn’t cute (maybe he was trying to help her out).  Yup they love laying back there, I think because it’s cooler by the big window.  And I was more worried about them trying to eat the tree!

Can you just use some NIC grids to block them off? Otto can’t resist the allure of the curtains either, so I’ve just learned to keep him away from them. If I keep him away long enough, it seems to break the chewing habit, then if he gets at them again, he forgets that he once liked to chew on them. Could work for Archie.

Cotton was eating up our blinds.   I started putting 2 heavy books there so he can’t get behind there and chew them.   IT works.   Maybe spraying perfume there or menthol  they hate that.

I wouldn’t scold or give time outs -that’s waaaay too abstract for them. Just block access and give him something else to destroy-something cheaper like the yellow pages

Seriously though -scolding (positive punishment) or putting back in his cage (negative punishment) just don’t work-and he’s just going to connect you-with-bad-things rather then eating-the-curtains-with-bad-things It’s easiest and works to just block it off and give something else-and it doesn’t have to be forever-just until he’s out of the habit-likely a few weeks

Just block them off. My rabbits destroyed $1500 worth of curtains in about a week. Quick – go now – block them off!

We gave up & rearranged our furniture so the back of the couch not only covers the bottom of the curtains, but blocks them from getting behind it to chew further.  Good luck!

Hmm well everyone has all good ideas but I don’t know if I can use any.  The couch would be a good idea, except the back of ours is slanted so it doesn’t go right up against a wall so they can still fit behind it.  Plus we can’t put it up against the window.  The window is huge….I didn’t put it there and I’m not crazy over it but it came with the house.  Originally we had vertical blinds that came with the house.  Everytime the AC went on they would clang and I hated it. (I can’t imagine having them now they’d be worse with the rabbits I’d imagine)  Also some of them broke off and part of it didn’t work.  So we went and got these panel curtains that were much nicer.  I like my privacy and didn’t want the window to be open all the time, people could see right into the room then.  So the 2 panels (on each side) were sewn together and that way we can close them shut.

I let them out today (the other day we put the blinds over the recliner but they’re starting to get wrinkled ) and so far they’ve been good but Archie was too busy running circles around the room to notice.  The recliners are right by the window so we can really block them off or the chair will hit it and also they love running around the living room and Gracie is a Diva…we put a cage around the x-mas tree and ended it to the wall and she disapproved of that quickly by picking it up and throwing it over so she could go around the back of the tree.  We now have the ends clipped together so they can’t go under the tree but can still go around to run.  Bunnies are so difficult sometimes!  Here’s some pics of the window for better description.  I’m probably just going to keep an eye on them and if they continue again then we’ll have a problem but maybe he’ll ignore it again *crosses fingers*

I know if I put grids in the back they’ll just throw them across because there’s nothing to keep them there.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!  Sorry, I’m still shocked by what he did!

And finally the big picture….I mean the big window.  I will never get a house with that big of a window again…it was a pain to find curtains that size!  Oh yes and our dangerous X-mas tree that we caged in.

Poor you. Our problem was the same, no way to block them off at all. We just gave in because they were so detroyed already.

btw – that is a HUGE window!

                            Oh gack…what a bummer!

You could try the perfume trick. This is what my vet had recommended a few years back. You don’t need much – not much at all! You can even spray perfume on a paper towel and then rub it along the bottom part of the curtain (NOTE: You’d have to test a small corner of course to make sure that this didn’t stain your curtains – that wouldn’t be good!)

Nice job with bunny proofing the (The tree is nice – I’m jealous you have room for such a nice tall tree!)

I’ll try the perfume on the paper towel, I didn’t think of that!  I was afraid of spraying it right on there.  Archie was out last night and I caught him trying to nibble again   Such a naughty bunny, maybe I shouldl put coal in his stocking now

Thanks!  Unfortunately Sandy still stretchers her body over the grids and tried to nibble the tree haha!  That tree was actually a little too tall because our ceilings are short (we have a weird house).

lol oh  my buns are something if not persistant.    The big tree penned in so it doesn’t run away.   Now that is cute. Think the tree can jump the barricade and run away?     I keep joking but I know your problem iisn’t really funny.

I have curtains I put 2 big heavy books against to keep Cotton from getting on the sill and chewing the blinds.  Fortuantely he doesn’t chew the curtains.  Least not yet.

It looks a bit tricky to get the window blocked off in your pic there.   And wow your bun must have really loved that curtain.

how long do you keep your bunnies out? maybe while they are out you can use hair clips or those clips that close the bags of chips and just pull them up a little higher so they can reach them. its such a pain in the butt when they get into everything. i have to block a bunch of stuff off every time i let my bunnies out. i bunny proof more than i child proof with my 1 year old!!! good luck. i hope u can figure something out.

If what you’re going to try doesn’t end up working, I just thought of something that might provide a distraction.  I have this long, flexible tunnel that is offcut of air conditioner duct.  It stretches out to 7 metres long but can be compacts back down to about a foot to be put away.  It cost me $12 from a recycle place.  So I was thinking perhaps you could run something like this along that wall.  It would block the curtains a bit but mostly distract them.  It can be easily pushed aside by a determined bunny nose but at least you’d hear that happen and be able to stop curtain attack in time.  Here’s the pic I posted of it on the forums a while ago.  I know it wouldn’t fit into normal decor themes but as I said, it can be packed away.

I guess you’d have to watch chewers with this. Mine seem to run thru it a few times then generally ignore it.

^^^ My decor actually includes quite a bit of aluminum tubing… so that would fit in perfectly… LMAO!

I like Rosalie’s suggestion, can you tie them out of the way when the buns are playing?

Jers, your suggestion with the tubing made me thought of something….their CHRISTMAS PRESENT!!!  We bought them a bun run from BB  I completely forgot and it’s in the basement since we’re giving it to them for x-mas.  Wow I cannot believe I forgot about that, I know it won’t cover the whole window but Archie is only concentrated on one spot where they usually lay.  I like the clip idea too.  If the tunnel doesn’t work we’ll try that.

                                          lol Beka.
The Bun Run should work well. They can’t sit on top of it either to get to the curtains. How forward thinking of you to have gotten it! I’d break it out early and set it up now. The bun won’t know it’s not the 25th. Some modifications I would make for my own 2 would be to put a strip of vinyl to line the base (one that’s wider so it curves up the insides a bit) and maybe a brick inside at each end. Only because I know my 2 would pee on the tunnel carboard eventually and attempt to move the tunnel. Sound familiar?

Our buns love to play in curtains. And they all at some point have nibbled the curtains. We did like Jersey above suggested but we used the cardboard tunnels from Home Depot found in the Cement area. They come even smaller in circumference so if you cant fit a larger one you could fit a smaller one but the buns would have to scrunch up to get in it.

We have a large one behind our couch so the buns cant mess up the couch or play w/ the curtains. What we did was used two tunnels and connected them behind the couch and the buns run into them. At the end of the tunnel is a wall and they have tried to dig their way thru the wall (weird i know lol) so I put a dig box at the end. I put a cardboard box in on its side w/ the opening connected to the tunnel so they run right into the box and can dig to their hearts desire. I check the box frequenlty to ensure they havent found a way out. lol

We have had this set up for several years and we have never had to buy new cardboard tunnels. They dig and chew and scratch the inside but never enough to damage it. We also have a few of these tunnels in different sizes in their rooms that they like to play in as well. I think bunnies like the idea of little obstacle courses for them. The couch tunnel is always apart of their Bunny500s in the living room.

Since the cardboard tunnel is curved it only took each bun once to attemp to walk on the top for them to never try it again. lol

Hedi, that is neat! A dig box on the end of the tunnel would be great for rabbits! It sort of simulates a burrow in progress, that they can work on when they like. And the tunnel would keep the mess contained. And the tunnel blocks of chew spots. I like!

I use baby blankets for the baby bunnies to play with – I drag it and they chase and bite it. But now they think they can play with the curtains too. Opps. So much for a safe toy.

Forgive me if this has already been suggested, but what about leaning a few large clear acrylic sheets against the lower part of the curtains? I used to do that in front of my bookcases, since Spockie would pull out the books on the lower shelves. They are sometimes called lucite, and come in sheets at a hardware store that can be cut to size. You really only need them to be about 2 feet tall, just wide enough to cover the width of the window. Just set them on the floor and hold in place with something propped against each end. Because it’s clear, it doesn’t really show. Can you picture it?
