today when i clipped penny’s nails, it looks like his duclaws are growing inward. has anyone experienced this? it can’t be comfortable for him! his nails are very long (the quick is very long), so i can’t really cut them shorter without hurting him. does this have something to do with it?

Some of my rabbits dew claws are like this. I think that it’s just the way your rabbit is “made”. A genetic thing. You just have to be more diligent to make sure they are kept at a comfortable length.

Trimming once a month helps keep the quick shorter too.   Ol twisty dew claws  are not uncommon.   Unfortunately they are the hardest ones to get to.

ON 2nd thought why do animals have dew claws anyways.    When I had my boxer her dew claws had been removed by her breeder/owner.  I dont’ think  animals need those   anyways just a thought

Good question BT! I don’t actually know the physiology behind dewclaws… Anyone know why they have them to begin with?

Definitely a good question, BT. According to Wikipedia, dogs can use them to hold on to bones and things as they eat. Some animals can also use them to help climb, though I’m not really sure how they would help very much. I’m having a tough time figuring out the purpose of a rabbit having them.

ETA: Some other articles say that dew claws are just vestigial digits left behind from when animals had more toes. So this would imply that it doesn’t have a use except that million of years ago it was just another toe.  So I have no idea! Haha. My Googling has not been very successful.

I believe dew claws are vestigil …http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewclaw yup they are-vestigil means an part that is no longer needed but is there because it was needed earlier in evolution. Ie. our appendix is vestigil

Many people remove the rear dew claws in dogs (or all) as they can be torn off -especially in working/hunting breeds-tromping through a forest usually rips the dewclaw off

dewclaws get NO wear in bunnies and even dog and cats- so those usually most vigilantly need to be clipped.  In some extra toes cats- we have owners that will get just those odd toes declawed to prevent any possible injury since those are even more prone to ingrowing.
