        Hello everyone,

I am pleased to say that my little bun bun Aesop is completely litter trained.  I’ve got 2 litter boxes in his cage (he did not respond to the one and kept peeing through the cage, so I added the second one) and I keep his cage door open into an x-pen with a litter box out there.

        My question is this:

I put the hay directly into the litter box in order to train him, but after they are trained, do you continue to put the hay in the litter box?  I felt his hay tonight, and he peed on it!  It seems as though he needs more room in the litter box, so I would like to take the hay out and start putting it somewhere else.

Will this ruin all of my progress with him?

        Thanks!

You could get a hay rack to hang above the litter box on the side of the cage/pen, so he can still eat it while being in the box. I keep Monkey’s pile IN her box, cuz she’s just so little and cant reach most racks comfortably She doesn’t pee on it often, as she usually has her face stuffed in the pile and her rear at the edge of the box hehe

My buns wont use the litter tray if there is no hay. I think they like the amusement of chewing while going potty. I notice that when they have no hay, they potty near the phone book so they can chew at the same time. Bizarre I know.

Hay racks are fine-save hay from getting peed on. In fact it’s a good idea hygeine wise and money wise. I don’t think it will untrain him either.

I do put hay in the litter box because
              a) they just pull it all out of the hay rack (Mine do-not everybun!)
              b) it makes it easier to clean up
              c) they are really clean-they will pee on it-but they are not going to eat it after they pee on it (hence the wasted hay)

Also-those plastic colored hay racks they sell in stores-useless imo. A plastic bin hung high is a good idea Beka has a cool hayrack setup in her xpens
