Hi everybody, I’m from Indonesia. I have a 1 year old neutered rabbit. He is a house rabbit. I know most of you here are not from Asia. But here in the pet shops most of the pellets that are sold is alfalfa based pellets. Right now I’m feeding my rabbit Oxbow 15/23 or sometimes some other brands if I can’t buy the Oxbow when it is out of stock since its quite hard to find the pet shops that sell Oxbow here. So my problem is that Oxbow is actually the only pellet brand sold here that is timothy based. So is it alright if I continue on giving him alfalfa pellets along with unlimited timothy hay? I only give about 2 tablespoons of pellets, and some  veggies besides the hay daily. Will he get obese in the long run or will there be any problem? I wish timothy pellets is easier to get but unfortunately thats not the case.

I think that would be fine. I know it’s a good quality pellet and that’s important. Many times we are limited by what we can get so you have to make adjustments and he sounds as if he’s on very limited pellets anyway.

My rabbit weights less than 4 lbs, he’s a dwarf breed. that’s why I give him 2 tbs pellets. Does this counts as unlimited?

No, that is portioning it out which is the right way to do it.

Do you give him greens and vegetables?

Yeah, I do give veggies daily. And most of the times, I buy other types of of grass hay like Elephant grass hay, since here the types of hay  that  I can get are different kinds of hay other than timothy, brome, orchard, etc. Alfalfa is available in feed stores, but I can only buy timothy hay from pet shops which is ridiculously expensive if I compare to the hay planted here locally.

I absolutely agree! In an ideal world we’d all have the very best food, hay, litter, pellets at all times but it doesn’t always work that way. The important thing is that the alfalfa pellets are kept limited and the bulk of his diet is hay and greens. Even if you were feeding timothy pellets, they’d still need to be fed in a very small amount, so I think you should be alright. The 15/23 is a high quality food, so that’s important too.

What about order timothy based pellets online? It’s better than finding in Asia.

If you do that, your rabbit will live longer, think about it.
