I just got my bun spayed, and I honestly feel like a new bun mommy all over again.  I cried like a little kid when I dropped her off.  She apparently went through surgery well, no hiccups or anything, but the vet in all honesty didn’t impress me.  Rather, his staff didn’t impress me.  When I had forgotten food, the vet tech told me to go to a local super market to get some.  I told her she eats Ecotrician and most grocery stores don’t sell it, to which she replied “Get Kaytee or something!”  So…not to impressive.  The vet, however, is amazing.  The aftercare sheet I got was more geared towards dogs & cats, so I guess I’m just looking to other bun owners for what to expect.  She feels skinnier, if that makes sense.  Like…baggy?  Lol, I’m not too good at descriptive language.  Anyway, if anyone could give me just a rundown of what to expect? I have her in her baby cage to limit movement.  She can still stretch fully and all, but she’s not in her room for now.  Help?  Guidance?  Thanks kids

Leaves you a bundle of nerves doesn’t it?!
You’ll probably find shes pretty low key for the 1st day but encourage her to eat – greens are good as they give her fluids also. Watch for signs of pain like grinding teeth – if this happens, get pain med form the vet if they didn’t give you any. Make sure she’s not bothering her stitches too much. Over the next few days you can check her incision to see it’s healing ok. Hope she recovers swiftly.

Her appetite not being normal is normal at this time.   To encourage her to eat  her fav greens even treats just to get her eating some.   Then in a few days she will be eating hay then pellets agian.  Pellets usually come last and hay 2nd in the recovery process.

Ditto the above. The biggest risk post-spay I think is infection and pulled stitches, so watch for increased redness and swelling. If there isn’t anything like that, it’s a good sign. They say to limit jumping, but otherwise she will gradually regain her energy. My favorite trick is to put a little mirror on the floor or down low, then hold a treat above her to get her to stand up for it. You can see the incision that way without picking her up.

Very glad to hear it’s done. Congrats.

I’ve taken everything out of her habitat that she can jump on, but like I said, for now she’s in her baby cage. Is about a week in her baby cage decent? Should I go longer? Shorter?

I just got my Sweet Pea spayed also. The first day home she sat in the back of the cage in the corner and didnt want to be bothered much. I slept on the floor with her for 3 nights in a row- and sat on the floor with her all day when I got home from work. (i like to think I helped with her speedy recovery =) due to my love and attention lol) Lucky for me she starting eating as soon as surgery was over. Not nearly as much as she normally would – but she picked a pellet there – a green here- 4 pellets there- and then more greens… and then lastly hay- by the 2nd -3rd day her appetite was back completely- and by the 4 th day she was running around trying to jump on everything – just as if she had forgotten she has an incision. I also gave her meloxicam everyday for 4 days for the pain. But un-Lucky me – she chewed all of her external stitches out by the 4th day – but thankfully she already started to heal – so the doc just gave her some antibitics for the week to keep the incision from infection – today makes it the 8th day since her spay and she now has full access to her 7 foot tall cage- she is acting perfectly normal – and her stomach looks great. – Its nerve racking worrying about them – I am glad it is over. I checked her incision every morning and night – but that mirror thing is a great idea! I wish I woulda known that earlier. I also disinfected her cage 2-3 times a day and gave her a new blanket or towel every time I cleaned – just to make sure the wound stayed clean. Good luck- i hope she isnt a chewer!!!! ::healing vibes::

That is normal since she hasn’t eaten much in the last few 24 hours. I forgot to mention in my response in the other post that her poops, when she does start back(probably late tonight/tomorrow) will most likely be smaller in size and amount for a couple of days.  If she still isn’t pooping anything tomorrow, ring your vet to let them know.

Great fun being on poop watch isn’t it?

Sweet pea wouldn’t use her litter box – she peed little puddles quite often the first day – and maybe 1 or sometimes 2 poops would come out. It wasn’t much that she was producing – but she did produce some. I read that for the first 24 hours its normal to not see any – but if you dont see any by tomorrow I would call the vet. Is the bunny eating and not producing any poops? or is she not eating also?

I’m betting you’ll see some significant improvement today in her behavior. I think the maximum time in the smaller cage is a week. My guess is that within 5 days she will be entirely back to normal, with a bald patch and a tiny incision site. But if she doesn’t poo, or has any other changes by tomorrow then as BB said, definitely call your vet. Watch for grinding teeth that indicates pain, too.

Thanks so much everyone It’s hard for me, because while my cats are rescued, they were altered before I got them, so I’ve never had to go through this. Thanks for your support!

She definitely pooped! I got up today to clean her cage before work and there was a little pile of poo in the corner. It was smaller, but it’s poo no less! She’s getting a little more active. I brought her x-pen down and enclosed her baby cage in it, so she has many about 2 extra feet to hang out. Nothing to jump in or on, literally nothing in there. I only keep her there for about an hour or so, and all she does is stretch out. She’s been so good with her incision, she barely gets near it, and it looks good

wonderful!!! The meds from surgery and any pain meds can cause small poopies or even mushy poopies. So glad she is feeling better

One of the things i noticed was Coco’s funky looking eyes – until someone here told me they put some ointment on them while the rabbits are sedated to prevent the eye from drying out – which made sense. But she looked like a zombie rabbit for a good 4 days.
