        Hey everyone!

We have 2 large litter trays. Pretty enormous actually. one for the boys and one for the girls. They are really good at using the tray for their business, and their carpet stays really clean, (except one of the girls, cheeky rascal!)

We have been using straw for the litter. But it gets smelly really quick because of all the poo that comes out of the 8 buns!

I was going to buy some of the paper litter, but it is quite dear so I thought I would ask all you guys whats best to use Im stumped because I dont know what will absorb the smell. they get cleaned regularly though. Its just really hard disposing of all the straw.

What do you all use for litter?

I use Yesterday’s News and wood stove pellets. Both work great for me.

I just switched to wood stove pellets and I have NO regrets. $4 for 40 pounds and it works just as well as anything else I’ve used, and I’ve used them all.

Carefresh gets pricey, especially with how many bunnies you have

I started using a pelleted pine litter this year and it’s going pretty good. It’s called Woody Pet. Cost me $16 for 13kg bag.(http://www.woodypet.com.au/smallanimals.htm  Similar to wood stove pellets mentioned. Also used as horse bedding etc The site used to list stockist but I cannot find that info now. All I have found out is SA Farriers (http://www.farriers-sa.com.au ) are distributors. They may supply somewhere closer to you. There might be other horse stall bedding you’re aware of and this would be similar. You don’t use as much as cat litter as it’s pretty absorbant. So you could sprinkle a bit in then straw on top.

I’ve also seen “bales” of small cardboard squares as bedding/litter.  I wonder if you tried sheets of cardboard under the straw whether that would help any?
You’ll find after the buns have had the big op, the pee smell will reduce quite a bit.

’tis the season for Wood Stove Pellets!  I’ve seen them in the Menards ad already.

It’s the same stuff as Feline Pine but in a slightly larger pellet, and it’s awesome for price AND odor control.  All the “don’t use pine” warnings don’t apply because all the harmful phenols are “cooked out” in the pelleting process.

With the sheer volume of bunnies (and poop), I would really recommend wood stove pellets/ horse stall bedding. Their poop/pee is only going to get bigger and more plentiful. I personally cannot afford to use Carefresh for 2 buns, let alone 8.

I agree woodstove pellets are great and saves money too! If you have a local Tractor Supply or feed store, you should be able to find them there.

I go to Menards or Lowes. Call around to our local home improvement stores… since the wood stove pellets are intended for people to burn to heat their house, chances are that stores that carry wood burning stoves will carry wood stove pellets too. I’m sure you know but… just make sure that there are no chemical additives or accelerants! Otherwise, they’re safe. When in doubt, check out the pellet manufacturer online or call them directly and ask. The pellets I use don’t specifically say on the bag that there are no accelerants, but their website does.

I would recommend Feline Pine wood pellets for cats. I found it in different sized bags very, very cheap in my regular chain of grocery stores in the pets aisle. (Publix). It’s just as good as the rabbit pine. Pine pellets made for pets has not added an accelerant, which is a harmful chemical sometimes found in actual wood stove pellets. Do not use pine shavings however.

Personally I got sold on Aspen Supreme pellets after BB made a case for their being safer than pine, more absorbant and better at cutting down odor. I get those at Petsmart. Cost a bit more, but you can actually use Aspen shavings (It’s just a different tree but somehow it’s safer) safely as well, and that is cheaper still.

Every region is going to have something slightly different.  I think ours are Nature’s Heat or something like that… we get them at Lowe’s for about 6-7 bucks for a 40 pound bag.  What we did was we bought 8 bags in February and we’re storing them in the house.  They are only available for a limited time since there is not a huge demand for them in the warmer months.  I’m down to 2 bags now, so I’ll have to call and make sure they have some and then I’ll drive over there.

Do not get discouraged if your local store does not have them!  We live right outside fo Cleveland, Ohio in a large suburban area.  NO ONE uses wood stoves here!  Our Home Depot did not carry them, our Lowe’s did not carry them.  Fortunately the guy at Lowe’s was able to check another store about 20 minutes “into the boonies” and they do carry them!  It’s amazing what a difference 20 minutes can make with what a store will carry!

I am saving more than 200 dollars a year by buying wood stove pellets, so it is definitely worth a 20 minute drive once a year!

I agree wiith everyone that all-natural wood stove pellets are excellent in terms of price and odor control/absorbency.

My trio has one grated littercage where I put a thin layer of Stal-Dry underneath which helps me save on litter material.  They also have another large regular box in which I use wood stove pellets when I can find them without chemicals added, or if I can afford it that month I like to buy Aspen shavings too. At times I use newsprint processed in my confetti shredder… I do believe my rabbits love the variety.

I would also recommend Feline Pine. It’s all-natural and it doesn’t bother bunnies’ noses.
