We have 2 bunz; 1 female (Lainey) & 1 male (Gulliver). They were litter box trained and recently Gulliver starting peeing (mostly in corners). We did move things around and did major cleaning recently…could he be trying to mark his territory? He didn’t do it when we first brought him home from the shelter, but it has been EVERY day lately. No other noticable behavior issues other than that. HELP! Thank you in advance…
1) How old are they and 2) Are they speutered?
That made me laugh Wendy – It was my first thoughts too – Exactly in that order.
Ok, your profile says they are both fixed and over 2 yrs of age….
So I would guess he is showing his disapproval at things having been moved. Is this in a living area? Do you normally have a litter box available for them there? You may have to reduce their space and re train him. For the areas he has peed in, vinegar and water seems to be best for taking away any smell (so he doesn’t continue to mark it.)
Sometimes they can lose litter habits when they’ve got a bladder or urinary tract infection so do keep a close eye on him.
Guess you can tell I’m new to this! Gulliver (male) is 2.8 yrs old & Lainey (female) is 2.5 yrs…at least that is what the shelter told us. They were not bonded and it took us about a week but they are unseparable now. Lainey’s bathroom habits are great, she just likes to chew & dig & is pretty fiesty. Gulliver would be happy being petted (NOT picked up) & constantly grooms Lainey. I thought it must be a territory thing ’cause of the changes we recently made. We use to have them in our family room & at night they would stay in a sectioned off area. Other than that, they go out back during the day periodically & play in their boxes & tubes. We just set up our back bedroom which has a sliding glass door to our side yard which they love, but so far haven’t gone out that way. They appear to have adapted well to their room and have hallway & entry way access all the time with part of every day out in the family room with us. This new peeing thing has really bummed us out. Any tips would be appreciated. Looks like everyone on this site really understands bunz & has alot of good information to share.
Welcome, by the way!
So is it this back bedroom he’s peeing in or back in the family room where they were formally set up?
Unfortunately, he isn’t picky…both areas & anywhere in betwen as well. He does go in his box at times & tonight, 4 hours in the family room & no pee. Both him & Lainey hung out in their boxes by the heater but they were out for a good part of the afternoon (it was 73 degrees today) & probably tired.
Personally, I believe some rabbits (mine!) can pee as a dominance behaviour. You may have been seeing this at the changes you’ve made at home. Hopeful he’s made his point now… If you do see him backing up to pee, maybe call out a sharp “No!” or handclap. Then get him to the litterbox and praise him. It’s one of those things you can only reprimand as it’s happening – not later on the discovery of a puddle somewhere. If it gets bad again, you may have to put them both in a pen in the new space until the litter habits are better.
If you find retraining Gulliver is not working, or he’s peeing while running or dribbling, sitting in the pee, he probably needs to see the vet.
Coco is a dominace pee’er too jersey – She doesn’t like when I make any changes OR when I was cleaning the boxes TOO frequently.
It only got better when I enforced night time caging ( since she was peeing all over the room, but only at night)
Good news…not so good news. Well Gulliver has not been peeing in his room for about 2 1/2 weeks now
, however, periodically he still goes in the family room. Seems to have 2 favorite spots. He went yesterday morning when I was in the back room & I cleaned it up, spot cleaned the area, sprayed with a vinegar & water mixture & covered the area up. About 2 hours later he went AGAIN right next to the spot I covered
. It has been quite quiet lately & they have got all the attention they “request” so I’m a bit perplexed again. My brother brought up an interesting question…we clean their litter boxes with vinegar so is he relating the vinegar scent we spray to his litter box? We started putting down a pad with plastic backing by his litter box in their room & once in awhile he will use that which is OK with me
compared to hitting the carpet or hardwood floors. Sure wish I would have read up on rearranging and adding new furniture before we did it ’cause it was SO nice when they both were accident free! Oh well, could be worse
.
You may want to try the Nature’s Miracle stuff then, if the vinegar smell is making him think its his box. Its great stuff, even my Monkey doesn’t pee where I use it now ![]()
Now that you mention it, I did have that thought awhile back – I’ve never tried anything different so that IS what I’ll do…let you know! Thanks ![]()
Do you have a litter box in the family room? Since this was the former area for night time, perhaps he’s still “claiming” it. I would provide a litter box, put some soiled litter in it from the other ones, and eventually, you may be able to remove this from the family room.
Actually, yes we do have one in the same location it was when they were out here all the time. Day before yesterday, he hopped right over there 2 times…yesterday not so much. I keep getting optimistic & then he slips up…they sure keep you in anticipation ALL THE TIME. I think that is what is so cool about bunnies, you just never know…hehehe! Thanks for your advise
.
UPDATE: NO peeing in ANY room – 5 days now
. I think we finally resolved (hope hope hope) Gulliver’s peeing issue. The last area he was still going to was in the corner of the family room. Their litter box in the family room was about 20 feet away & kitty-corner from their daytime area but where it has always been since day one. I was reluctant to move it because it was out of direct eyeshot should we have company…BUT…I did and NO ACCIDENTS!!! I definately would rather have it out in the open than constantly cleaning up pee on the carpets. He must have just gotten lazy?! Just a bit weird ’cause he use to go over to the other corner all the time before we rearranged the rooms.
Now, one more question & then I can close out this topic. I see that many people use pellets. When we got the bunz, the shelter said to use hay for their litter which we have been doing. Then I noticed that many members use pellets. I like the concept of absorbancy to fend off the urine smell so I bummed some pellets from a friend that had some & put some pellets in their litter boxes & hay on top. They don’t appear to even notice the difference. Do we use just enough to cover the bottom, or 1-2-3-4-5 inches..??? We do plan on continuing the hay on top as well…Lainey loves to sit in the box when eating hay although Gulliver sits outside of it to eat. Also, how often do you clean out the litter? Wondering if you clean it less often or not (wouldn’t that be nice!). Thanks in advance for your input…
tehehe! Funny boy! Looks like he wanted some rearranging done of his stuff too. Good to hear you got it resolved.
So it’s wood pellets you are trialling now? I think you can use less than say you would of kitty litter. Maybe 1-2 inches? With hay on top i’d think you’d have to change it daily. Not sure. Soiled hay is not good to keep around them, especially if they’re eating the litter box hay also. Maybe try pellets in the back half and hay in the front? Though Gulliver might disapprove of this – be warned…
I’ve noticed some people can use litter liners. So if your rabbits won’t chew it, that could make things easier. Then you can just use little pellets +hay and remove the lot quickly.
I think with wood pellets you can put another layer on top after it’s soiled a bit because they absorb odour pretty well. I use then under a plastic grate – so I only use very little. However, I tend the litter box about twice a week. Midweek I clear out soiled stuff and add more new. Then completely clean out at the end of the week.
Thanks Jerseygirl. We went with a couple inches of pellets with hay mostly on one side since we use an under-the-bed container for their litter box so that works well. There is no way we could use liners – Lainey will chew most anything. But with the new set up & change of litter, so far, so good…he has also come out of his shell recently and been a TON of fun. I need to video him & Lainey…it is hysterical when they get playful together!
