I’m Just wondering best way to protect the tree, this being my first year with the 2 buns ![]()
Ooo good question, my first Chirstmas with bunnies since I was 8. i so don’t remember! *pokes other bunny slaves*
We made a little barrier out of NIC grids and put it around the tree. Looks a little odd but…

Setting up a train around the bottom of it?? Lol, I just got a vision of the bunnies wrapping you up in roped and tying you to the rails.
Don’t go giving Monkey any ideas you! *poke poke*
Well I’ve put mine up a bit early this year, like today lol so far i’ve used a big box opened around it when they were out, they didnt even seem to interested in it really! I know they will have fun xmas day, because mouse had lots of fun with the wrapping paper on my sons birthday so she’s gonna go wild at christmas lol !
There were some really great threads on this…*hmmmm*
It will be my first christmas with buns and a tree too!
These are all I can find-but I just know we had some really good threads on keeping the buns safe during the holidays…
I know you want to be careful of glass ornaments, hang popcorn strings and tinsel high or not at all, block wth NIC cubes…

AHHH here we go-here’s the really comprehensive one

I’ve gone ahead and gotten all bah humbug this year since I’m so homesick. Rather than trying so hard it hurts I’m just boycotting Christmas. No tree or any other decorations. In a box under the stairs is sure to keep Freya away from the tree!
We’re too lazy to set up our big fake tree, so I’m going to buy a rosemary tree from the grocery store. It’s short, only a few feet tall, so I can put it up where Otto can’t reach it (he’s not much of a jumper). Plus, he actually likes rosemary, so I can rip off a branch and feed it to him 🙂
I’m sure my advice is in one of the thread that K&K posted… but the short of it is… construct a NIC grid fence that can completely circle the tree. Your bunny’s abilities is going to determine if it has to be one or two grids high… It doesn’t look GREAT… but it’s just one of those things we gotta do.
Don’t you know the NIC manufacturers would make a fortune if they tuned into US instead of college students as users for their shelving stuff? Just think, green and red ones for Christmas season, brown and gold for Thanksgiving, Pink for Valentines. We decorate our homes with them anyway!
lol so true about the NIC’s. I would love seasonal ones lol
Last Christmas I put our small fake tree on a high table and covered the table with fabric. This year I don’t even think I can put a tree out because now I have a kitten too as well as Dexter lol.
Well our tree is safe at the moment from the rabbits, but Sasha my cat has suddenly reverted to kitten again and is chasing baubles around the sitting room lol i need to look up these NIC grids, see if i can find any over here!
Dont put a train under it! We have a big train under ours and the buns love sitting on the tracks as it goes around, until the train hits them and falls over and starts puffing smoke out with wheels flying. they think its a great amusement! They just sit there and let it happen over and over again!
hehehe I can so see that Kafrn! lol
I’ll be gettign a real tree again this year, just isn’t right if I don’t. I looove the scent they fill the apartment with. But yeah, it will be cubed off I think ![]()
This year will be our first x-mas with all 3 of the buns! Last year we just had Archie but we didn’t have to much problems with him (plus he was still getting used to the house and it wasn’t hard to look after one bun). Today we’re putting up our x-mas decorations and I think we’ll try to construct a fence around it…..I hope we have enough NIC cubes since we just added more of a second floor to Sandy’s cage, uh oh!
I’m not to worried about Archie and Gracie but Sandy’s still in the “let’s eat everything I touch” faze. Always sniffing for something to nibble on
Our tree is going in the corner of the room so at least we only have to make a 1/2 circle fence. We have a fake prelit tree. We also put the lights around the outside of the windows instead of inside. Hubby suggested it and made a point that we’d have to buy a lot of cord covers and also the big window in the living room comes down by the floor so all they have to do is put their little paws up on the windowsil and nibble on the lights ![]()
Things we do to protect them! as well as our belongings!! lol ![]()
Bambi and Cinnamon were brought into the house last November. So it was their first Christmas inside and I didn’t know what they would do. We have a artificial tree. They didn’t bother it much, pooped on the tree skirt, and they kept chewing on the Nativity scene, I kept telling the buns “Don’t eat baby Jesus!” Ha ha! But then they started chewing on the presents, so we will have to do something this year.
My Carrera loves to play with tree ornaments-under supervision of course.
I put stuff thats bunny safe on the bottom and then Carrera knocks them off and then plays w/ them until I put the one back on the tree. I just love seeing them play.
But we threw away the old big tree and have a 3ft tree this year so we will have to put it up off the ground.
We don’t put our directly on the floor, and we don’t put ornaments or lights at the bottom. My bunnies love to sit under it, and have to sit up on their hind legs to reach a few nibbles.
The other thing you have to watch for is the water dish of a live tree. Many of us add the preservative to keep the tree from shedding so many of the pine needles. In the past when the tree was on the floor, we put chicken wire around the dish.
This will be Vivian’s first Christmas in her forever home so I will have to watch carefully how she reacts to the tree and then change things if I need to.
NOTE: Also watch out for presents on the floor. Mine love to open them and ruin the surprise.
Christmas Day Warning:
You may want to keep buns out of your “present unwrapping area” while that is going on. So often, the packages (especially kids toys!) have the little plastic pieces and twist ties and all kinds of junk holding the boxes together. A bunny would PROBABLY recognize this as non-food and leave it alone, but just in case, I’d strongly recommend you pen them up until you’ve had a chance to pick up all the unsafe wrapping (and maybe do a thorough vacuum of the area…)
Yes I caught Edson munching away on the lower branches. No problem last year because he was not venturing out into the living room. My lights and ornaments are higher up. Looks lovely
. He scurries around under the tree. He’s very nosey so anything new, he’s there inspecting. I think the munching has ceased but I’ll keep an eye out. Just be sure there is nothing harmful..no tree preservatives or anything in the water, lights or ornaments too low.
