Okay so I feel like a terrible mother…I’ve still never done this…I’ve been studying some YouTube vids to learn how to trance but until I learn there is NO way I can touch any of my buns “down there”. I also saw a YouTube of the anal glands being cleaned and it scared the crap out of me.

The reason I’m asking is because I’ve noticed Bindi’s bum area, near his little hole, there is some poopy stuff stuck on the fur and a bit of brown stains on his fleece blanket where he sleeps. There is no nasty smell from that end. They could be just cecotropes getting stuck, he has really long, thick hair under there. Could this be a sign he needs them cleaned?

LPT, it just sounds like a bit of poo. I think you could give a brief half butt bath. Just submerge the back end of bunny in warm water in a sink and wipe clean with baby soap or shampoo and a washcloth. If you don’t want to wet your bunny, then sprinkle some corn starch on his bum and try to comb it off or very carefully snip the ends of the fur to clean. I can’t do anal gland cleaning either, but if you think it’s time, let your vet do it and a bit of nail trimming as well.

YOU GUYS!!! It’s not that bad-certainly not as gross or hard as a dogs bum!!
(I just learned at the vet-you have to put your finger IN the bum and milk them…*barf* hehe)

So how do you tell? Well if you haven’t done them…. they probably need to be.
I do mine about every second month. They always need doing-some more then others. It’s important to do so they don’t get too crusty and possibly cut the skin or other probs. But it’s not like dog glands where you will see the dog scooting or you can touch them to see if they are full-you have to pry them open to see.

It’s super easy-whoever is doing your nail trims should do them. So if you can trim nails-just do the glands then If your vet does your trim-just ask him to do it
