Clarissa is ill – looks like GI stasis again. She never had this in her life now twice in 6 weeks!
She has been to the vet several times and is eating and pooping again but has been feeling sorry for herself for 3 days now, whereas last time she was better the next day - is it normal for the recovery to be so long? I hear it can take weeks!
Stasis twice in 6 weeks? Poor thing… has she had changes in diet, been eating anything she shouldn’t be? Silly things will eat anything they can get their little teeth on sometimes…
I don’t recall the details of her last GI issue- but does the vet have her on pain meds? I think what really helped my bunny pull thru was pain meds (Metacam), force feeding when he was not eating, Simethicone (gas meds) when his belly felt gassy- and I slowly decreased the frequency of giving the gas meds to avoid a flare up of gas again- and I think SQ fluids helped a lot (that is something that can be done at home- but your vet would have to show you how and give you the supplies).
Any idea what could have set this off? I was pretty clueless about what set off Schroeder’s GI issue- but am now beginning to suspect that he has what Dana Krempels has described as “Cow Poop Syndrome”- I will post about that in another thread though.
You definitely need to try to find the underlying causes. Has your vet looked at her teeth?
My rabbit Pepe recently had a bout of stasis – he had a blockage and it did take 2 weeks of very aggressive care to pull him through. This was the 2nd time that Pepe has gone through a very long bout. He also has molar spur problems which I suspect contribute as well.
My rabbit Mango had many stasis episodes when he was younger but has not had any since then. He had 2 very major ones (took 2 weeks each time as well for him). We took him off pellets.
Have you talked with the vet about Clarissa’s diet as well? Perhaps you need to adjust the diet.
There have been no changes to her diet, environment etc…we give her pellets with a high fibre content and loads of good quality hay, greens etc. We did suspect a different brand of hay to be responsible last time as our local pet store closed down and we had to use another brand for a few days (which got quickly thrown out!) but she has been on the same brand for a while now. I’m not sure if the vet has checked her teeth; I will ask tomorrow. She has had three lots of motility and painkiller jabs, and we are force feeding her Fibreplex for rabbits, a special paste in a syringe containing lots of fibre. We think she is slowly getting better and the vet seems to agree which is good news.
It’s just weird cos last time she got better really quick, this time she is up and down like a yo-yo, one minute she’s eating hay/greens and you wouldn’t think there is anything wrong with her, the next she’s sitting in a corner being all miserable on her own (most uncharacteristic). Our other rabbit Hazel is absolutely fine.
You know, I find that some rabbits are just more prone to illness than others. All things being the same (diet, environment, etc) one rabbit will just be sickly than the others (at least in my experience). It’s extremely frustrating.
Perhaps you should look at adjusting her current diet anyway (consult with your vet) – she may need less pellets or less greens.
Do ask about her teeth too.
Healing vibes to Clarissa and strength vibes to you.
{{Clarissa}} ditto the teeth getting checked-if there is an abscess or molar spurs-then the bunny will slow down eating which slows down the GI tract and can cause stasis… So a really good thing to look into
Keep us posted!
She’s been back to the vet who says she doesn’t have gas any more, the vet also checked her teeth, and while they aren’t perfect they shouldn’t be causing her any pain.
So the vet has given her another dose of motility drugs but no painkillers this time – she says that with no gas and if she is eating a little then she shouldn’t be in pain – the vet wants to see if she IS still in pain to see if there is an underlying condition we haven’t spotted. She says bring her back in a couple of days, unless she starts to get worse in which case bring her straight back (she’s been at the vet 4 times in 4 days!).
She is back home with us and acting really weird – hopping around in short bursts, nibbling occasionally but not really interested in food, and she is doing a lot of ‘bunny shakes’ – you know, like when a dog shakes its coat dry (she does this normally now and again when she is in a bit of a playful/frisky mood normally but not this much). Sometimes she just sits and stares at the wall for a while which is really worrying – it’s like she’s losing her mental abilities, or stoned or something!
Is this normal behaviour when recovering from GI stasis, or does anyone think there is something else wrong – please help, my wife is due to go into labour anytime now and this is stress we really don’t need!
If it doesn’t seem normal to you, it probably isn’t normal behavior.
Is she pooping.
She is pooping and has been for a couple of days, really small ones though. She is nibbling at hay and kale and is obviously taking some stuff in, but has no real interest in food.
She is now throwing her food dish around in a playful/grumpy kind of way as I am typing, now she’s eating a bit of kale. Then a couple of bunny shakes and now she’s back to staring into space. Really strange behaviour.
Has the vet done any x-rays or bloodwork on her?
No, vet said that if things don’t improve she will recommend giving her a general anesthetic, filing her teeth down a bit and giving her an x-ray.
She just ate some kale/rocket and hay that I had left for her, then when I put a plate with some more on in front of her, she picked the plate up and threw it across the room. It’s almost like she’s telling me to go away and stop fussing over her!
Oh poor Clarissa – she’s sounding very fussy!
At least she’s eating something.
When your vet said that her teeth aren’t perfect though what did he mean by that?
Thanks Sarita. The vet said that they were slightly uneven and beginning to ‘spike’ and that if they got much worse they could cause her discomfort by rubbing on her tongue/cheeks, however she doesn’t think that they are anything to do with her illness just now.
I hope your bunny feels better soon!!
Do you have video capabilities? Sometimes I would take video of strange behavior – like how Bailey used to run or when Rucy would do a strange chewing behavior even when she wasn’t eating, it would be important for the vet to see what was going on. So for behaviors that bunnies may not do “on cue” at the vets office. if you can be helpful to take video with your camera and then just bring your camera with you to replay to your vet through the viewfinder.
FYI: Rucy also had a slight misalignment and she would also get those spikes (called spurs here) and they definitely can cause pain as they grow, so she’d also have to get those filed periodically. So that’s good that your vet will keep an eye on that even if that doesn’t have anything to do with the current situation.
Sending healing vibes for your bunny and peace vibes for you.
Keep us updated!
I think I would have him file her teeth because it sounds like they need to be done. Some rabbits are very sensitive.
Thanks everyone. Clarissa seems to be on the mend again today, she has been acting more like herself and has done a couple of big happy flops.
I am starting to wonder if her weird behaviour last night was either due to her going ‘cold turkey’ off the painkillers she had been getting for three days, or if she was just fed up of going to the vet/being force fed etc.
Will keep you updated.
Man, this just gets weirder. Clarissa seems to have gotten over the worst of her illness, eating pretty normally, in fact she is especially active tonight, but now her and Hazel are fighting!
It’s Clarissa who is starting it but Hazel is sticking up for herself, we’re going to have to separate them tonight. They are best friends and never fight normally, Clarissa is top bunny in the hierarchy in our house but never really enforces it. I think it must be something to do with her getting over her illness, is this normal?
By the way, Hazel is spayed but Clarissa isn’t (we found Clarissa on the street in a box and have no idea how old she is and the vet thought it might be riskier to spay her).
It just may be her teeth. My rabbit gets very aggressive and grumpy when he has molar spurs. You know how uncomfortable you are when you have an earache or a toothache.
I’m glad Clarissa is starting to get better, but I agree with Sarita that she needs her teeth filed. They’re only going to get worse, so if it’s a good time to bring her in and leave her there to have it done, I would try it. You may want to board her for a day or two there once it looks like your wife is in labor, just to keep her in good hands while your attention is on “other things.” Then the vet could see her behavior as well. Just a thought.
Does your vet have email? If you did BB’s suggestion, you could just email her a link to an uploaded video of her.
Teeth issues can often be cause for stasis – especially in older rabbits. When uncomfortable they can become grumpy too! With the staring at the wall, it may be just her sleeping (eyes open) perhaps?
This may be a really looong stretch but do you think it’s possible she’s reacting to your wifes situation? I feel silly mentioning it…but they can be such sensitive critters.
Well, I hope that by this time, you, your wife & baby and Clarissa are doing well.
Clarissa is fine now, she’s well over her stasis and she has also stopped acting like a psycho which is nice. We think she was acting so crazy cos she was trying to re-establish herself as top bunny over Hazel although there was no need really – Hazel is quite submissive.
We will get her teeth done in the next few weeks on the vets recommendations, the vet would rather give her a while longer to recover from her stasis before she administers a general anaesthetic as Clarissa is at least 5 years old.
Still no baby though, one week overdue now and getting impatient!
Oh gosh – your wife must be so OVER it!! Hope baby comes safely soon.
Thanks for the update on Clarissa, good to hear!
Oh I hope baby comes soon!!
Glad Clarissa is doing well again-thank you for the update ![]()
