So with jackson the super-pee’er and Coco, the super fussy litter discerner, My habit has been to do a spot clean of the litter 2-3 times a week – scooping out all the wet litter and any obvious funk, putting down new YN and carefresh type stuff.
It had been going well – until this weekend. I cleaned ( the once a week super clean) and disinfected the litter boxes, mopped the floor, etc. ( As an aside, I found for my two if I cleaned TOO frequently, they would pee outside the box in protest – Gah. Too Clean, not clean enough, its like living with the Queen of Hearts)
By last night, I was all “What is wrong with the litter? Is is RANK.”
No different veggies, and Regular hay. Until it hit me.
In the summer, I have my windows open. I also only use the YN pellets and Care fresh in the summer. In the winter, I have added the aspen shavings as a base to help absorb more odor – which I had completely forgotten about until yesterday. I had a MASSIVE (like 20 pound bag) of aspen I had hoarded last spring, so I had to haul that out and start sprinkling. I crack my window when sleeping – but Montreal is starting to get really cold and I don’t want them in a massive draft.
A HUGE difference. Like SUPER HUGE difference. And the kids seem happier too.Or maybe that is just because Jackson learned how to jump up on the bed last night after watching Coco do it for Four months. So they did it over and over and over until I finally passed out at about 2 a.m.. For all I know, they continued to dance on my head all night.
