Is it Normal for house rabbits to malt in the winter?? My 2 both seem to be losing a lot of hair, and I’m wondering if it’s because , in the summer, it’s cooler indoors for them and now winter has arrived it’s warmer, so thats why they are malting. Is this right ?

oh apologys if i’ve spelt it wrong !

Extremely possible – remember that we are controlling the temperature in our homes so what might usually be normal molting periods for our rabbits is not normal anymore – we basically heat the house when it’s cold outside and cool it when it’s hot.

Mine shed all year long! But usually they have one big shed when it starts to get cool (around this time of year) and once in the Spring.

Otto’s sheds don’t really seem to correspond with the temperature at all! Actually, they usually seem to start when he’s stressed about something like going to the vet or taking a long car trip.

Also, when most animals molt with the seasons, they will have a big shed right before winter where they shed a thin summer coat and grow a thicker winter coat. So it’s very possible that they’re shedding in order to grow more fur for winter.

Monkey’s looking like a littler rag bag lately, hehe. She’s been calming down a bit, enough for me to actually get soem of the tufts of loose fur off of her, so its nto too abd yet She still looks silly tho

I general, they shed 4 times a year – one or two big ones and then a couple of little ones. So it’s very normal, and it corresponds with seasonal changes, though doesn’t have to.
(I ate a carrot-it’s time to shed. The Wizard of Oz is on TV tonight-it’s tme to shed…)

Thankyou for all responses!, It’s just first time I’ve noticed Mouse losing some fur, so I assumed it was because I’ve started putting the heating on with it being freezing here in Newcastle UK ! Dog seems to lose clumps, but she has a thicker coat to start with! So I guess it all makes sense

It’s cold out but it’s actually fall right now

                      Yes very normal

Molting and other seasonal changes in animals is controlled by daylight instead of temperature (Why you’ll sometimes see a white rabbit in fall or a dark rabbit when it’s snowed) I think Rupert sheds all year long and doesn’t ever stop
