A possible case of gas. I’m really not sure what’s wrong. Around 7:30 this morning he ate his breakfast. I went out and around 12:00 came home and he didn’t want a treat or anything else I offered. He had eaten all his morning hay and lots of poos throughout the night.
I gave him two hourly doses of simethicone (1cc) and gave tummy massages as much as he would allow. I’m going to give him another dose in about an hour. After the initial 3 hourly doses, how often can I give it?
I hate seeing my bunnies sick. It’s so sad to see Bindi not interested in food and not freaking out for a treat.
Any advice on what I else I should do? I’ve dealt with similar situations with Bindi and Stormy before but it’s always scary and stressful. They get sick so incredibly fast but then often bounce back just as fast.
The only thing I can think of is that last night around 9:00 or so he was running and I found an orange seed on the floor with a little chunk off it. I think maybe Stormy or him may have had a taste of it. Could this be the cause?
Send him some Binky Bunny Vibes please!
Vibes for Bindi. I would hand feed him some critical care.
Have you tried with dried papaya? It helps if it is due to hair in the system…though not sure this might help in this case, but well, in sickness all tricks are welcome
I have no idea about orange seeds, but apple seeds contain toxins, which poison rabbits.
Make sure he eats lot of hay.
Lots of binky vibes!
Is he any better now?
I’d call the vet and ask if orange seeds are a serious health issue and he needs to be seen, or if it’s just hard to digest and to continue what you’re doing. If he ate a lot of hay he’s already working on getting rid of what’s bothering him. I just don’t want you to wait until it’s too late to touch base with the vet today.
Things started to look really bad. Very lethargic and tooth grinding. I called my vet almost around 5:00 expecting to get the emergency answering machine but she was still open. Open till 5 on Saturday! I couldn’t believe a vet could actually see my sick rabbit on a weekend.
We had to wait a long time there because she had quite a few patients. He was grinding his teeth really bad and very lethargic in the carrier. She gave him some injected fluids, pain killer and anitbiotics (in case of bad growth caused by the lack of movement in his stomach), and motility fluids. She told me “I know you really know a lot about rabbits but I have to tell you he’s in a really bad state because he got so sick so fast. This can be very serious…” Of course I know this, but it still was hard hearing her say that.
While I was paying, he started moving around more in his carrier and on the ride home as well. As soon as I put him in his cage, he dove at the lettuce (only ate a few pieces but still…) and had 2 poos!!!! Boy, was I happy!!!
She gave us fluids to give to him via butterfly catheter (thankfully my bf knows how to do this from the last time Bindi was sick) every 4 hours along with the motility drugs and antibiotics to give him in the morning (Baytril).
If he continues to eat and poo I will have to call her cell and ask if I still need to administer the treatments as we discussed just as a precaution.
It’s gonna be a long night of bunny sitting but I’m willing to do anything for that little guy!!!
Bindi sounds like my Pepe – I just think some rabbits are more prone to fall ill – obviously we give all our rabbits the same exact diet but it’s always the one certain one who just is more sensitive than the others.
When Pepe had his last bout a month ago I’m convinced the fluids are what got him through it – I think he was miserable because we just did a ton but that that helped break up the blockage by hydrating it. Papaya tablets are useless when it comes to a blockage. Also the constant hand feeding and pain meds and motility drugs are what really got him through it.
I feel for you LPT – it took me two weeks to get Pepe through his but my vet would not give up (when I was ready to).
Healing vibes to Bindi and strength vibes to you.
Another interesting thing my vet gave me (on advice from a board certified specialist he confers with) was to give Pepe some Pepcid that he compounded for me. Apparently this helps lower the ph in the stomach which I guess is suppose to help with pain relief. I’d never heard of this before but I gave it a try (it was just .2 cc’s daily).
I’m glad he already started eating some lettuce! Juli got sick a couple weeks ago, and the fluids really helped her out as well. Hopefully he continues on a speedy recovery!
Oh, how scary. I am so sorry. I am so glad you have your vet back and she is open on the weekend! Sounds like you are giving Bindi the very best chance with such good care. I don’t have anything to add – just sending you hugs and healing vibes!
I’m just going to add some healing vibes here myself…I feel so much about Mimzy as you do about Bindi, he’s my loppy and tends to seem sick often to me and I’ll rush him off to the doc, but usually it’s nothing. I’m so sorry to hear Bindi Loo was so ill and I do hope he’s bounced back to normal by morning!
Hugs to you too LPT! Hang in there!
It’s morning here – how is he now?
If he’s any better, can you get some rest?
Re: your question above, I would continue to do exactly what the vet told you until she tells you to stop. It may be that he needs more than just an initial treatment, so follow her instructions to the letter. If you see a dramatic change for the better soon, you can always call her to report in.

oh no! tummy vibes for Bindi!! Is he getting better? *crosses fingers*
Thanks for all the vibes guys! They must work because he had a really good day (sorry I didn’t update sooner, but I’m sick too and needed some rest!). Ate all his veg and most of his hay at breakfast and he is eating supper now. He’s not impressed that the vet told me to take him off pellets for now. We gave him fluids this morning and more motility meds.
We were supposed to take him back to the vet at 4:00 for her to see him again but I called and she said since he is eating well and pooping (lots of big normal poos) there is no need to see him unless further problems. We have to continue the motility drugs for another 2 doses and the Baytril for 5 days (I hate the thought of this because last time on Baytril he lost weight).
He was even digging and chewing up a storm in the diggy box this afternoon! Of course I’m going to continue watching him very carefully for the next few days, but he’s looking pretty bright eyed and bushy tailed.
It’s incredible how fast they can fall ill and then bounce back just as fast. My vet was so glad to hear he’s doing well. She said she thought about us all night considering how terrible he looked yesterday. It’s great of my vet, she gave me her cell number so I don’t have to leave a message at the clinic after hours and wait for someone to call back.

I know! Stresses you out. So glad to read your update. Hope you feel better soon also. (((LPT & Bindi)))
That sounds so much better. I really like your vet, too.
Awww I’m so glad Bindi’s pooping again!! What a relief-that was FAST So sick so quickly
That’s amazing your vet is open on the weekend-that’s great!! ![]()
Wow, I like my vet but she hasn’t given me her cell to call yet.
And with being 30 miles out from the clinic, I need to save all the time I can in an emergency.
They do respond petty fast though after I leave a message. Sometimes they will connect me to the doc right away, so I can’t complain.
Good to hear Bindi is better! ^_^ What a relief! Good luck with the Baytril, I will keep vibes going that he doesn’t drop any ounces during treatment!
