Buying hay at the grocery store is ridiculously expensive.  I put an add on craigslist for hay asking for timothy or oat.  Someone responded saying they had grass hay (with no alfalfa in it).  Do you know what this means?  Is it good?

I think I would ask what kind of grass hay it is. You also need to check the quality – some hay is better than others and lastly, you need to even see if your rabbits will eat this hay. That will be the only way to know if it’s good by actually seeing it and perhaps getting a sample to see if they’ll eat it.

Did the person who replied have a business where you can go by and check out the hay in person? If you have feed stores, farms, horse stables nearby – it might be worth a visit so you can look at hay yourself. Get best quality for $’s that way.

Grass hay is perfect And yes-buying in a store is a rip off. Seriously your buying 1/10th of the hay for 4x the price…farm wise.

As long as it’s baled (in a bale) and they sell the hay for horse use (or rabbit) and not cow use then I’d go for it

The outside of the bale may look yellow (like straw) it gets bleached in the sun. Watch for mold of course (mold on hay is easy to spot and stinks but make sure you watch) and really good hay should be nice and soft

This is random…but someone grows hay in fields by my house and they had the bails stacked up….and someone set them on fire. That’s so cruel considering that is someones money to feed their family, especially in this type of economy. —But yes, find out where that hay is coming from, if it’s a feed hay for horses I would go for it, that’s what I feed mine. And grass hay is a particular favorite of my buns, maybe yours too And like the others said, check the quality, the softer the better, that its pretty clean (no dirt/dust or VERY little). Most people who sell hay will ask you what you want it for, either feed or bedding. So you can ask them to make sure its feed quality.

She’s asked us not to advertise on the forum, but I have to honestly say that the best hay I’ve ever used are the mini bales I ordered from BinkyBunny. I have tried different hays, and her Timothy and Oat mini bales are lasting forever. And Sammy loves them! They don’t weigh much so I think if you placed an order it would be worth the price.
