I have a Miniture Schnauzer/Laso.
I have had every pet there is out there. My guinuie pig died and I desided on a rabbit next. wow.. they are so much work. So smart yet so demanding. I think I have spoiled the thing by giving him to much time out of his cage. He shacks the cage with his teeth so hard, I wonder how they do not bleed. He has never bit me yet. (knock on wood). Pee’s only in the litter box… yet will pee on my couch if he gets on it with out me seeing. When time for bed and back to the cage. Getting him in the hole of the cage is so dreadful. My arms look like I have tried to commit suiced many times. So scratch up.
So my trouble with my dog. He licks him and is so Gentle. Yet now the poor doggie can not come down the basement when Newton is out. Newton races so fast at him that it is fast like lighting. Dog is so scared. He was smelling him once and the rabbit big his nose.
So will this end when he is Neutered on the 23rd. I feel so bad for my dog. He is my pet and my love. So for hours a day when I let Newton the rabbit out my dog is locked up stairs and crys at the door to be with me. Can not trust the crazy rabbit. Litter box thing went well. Have two in the basement. A few poo’s here and ther but he usally eats them. He is doing the circle dance around me all the time. Horney dance they should call it.
Anyone have a similar story and will this rabbit calm down and leave my dog alone..?

Most bunnies do calm down after being fixed, they also tend to be better about their litter box, and marking stops. Thus, no peeing on the couch
I never cage my bun anymore, she’s in a pen at the moment until she is fully healed after her spay. Once she’s healed, she’ll be back to full freedom of the apartment. Your bunc hasing the dog may just be a territorial thing, which may also calm down after your bun is fixed. Good luck!
You’re saying Newton the rabbit is getting neutered on the 23rd? If so, yes, it should calm him down. I have one rabbit that I had kept mature and intact for about six months until I trusted the vet enough to do the neutering, and this rabbit was aggressive to my dog. It was like watching David and Goliath: a 4 lb bunny vs. a 120 lbs dog. The bunny won. He would bite my dog’s cheeks and paws and the dog would back down. Granted the dog knew he wasn’t allowed to chase the rabbit. After this rabbit was neutered he never bit again. He should also stop biting you after the surgery. It may take a few weeks, though, for his hormones to shift.
Yes, I would not look for a change in behavior until a month after the neuter has gone by.
In the meantime, I’d like to suggest getting a dog x-pen, for Newton. Since you have a dog also, it’s doubly useful to invest in. Try to get one with a plastic cover, or clamp down a sheet over the top so Newton can’t jump out and you dog can;t jump in. It will provide your bunny with some room to run and play in, but confine him during this time. The dog then can be in the same room with you guys, and they can sniff but not strike. Hopefully.
Wow .. thanks to all that replied to this.
I was so excited about Newton when I got him and well my dog is in First Place. Poor thing scared to come down stairs..
He is a small dog and just licked my Gunieu pig.. and only licked the rabbit…. but when this rabbit is on carpet.. he is out for blood.
My daughter and husband feel so bad that I lock the dog out of the basement for hours a day to let Newton out. I figured the handleing and letting him out each day would be a benifit. They call him crazy rabbit.. he shakes that cage so hard with his teeth….
I have a huge clamp on it now since he know how to open it. Big huge cage too… but when Newton wants out he wants out!!!
I just want the dog to be able to be in the same room with me. He is my dog and luv’ s me. I love animals so much that one pet was not enough. I have no yard and no grass so my poor dog who was potty trianed when we moved her can live with it. Getting a another pup was out of the question with no grass. So thought a rabbit would be a new adventure.
I had a Coon…. from birth to adult.. he played with my two dogs.. what a sceen that was… he ws killed by a dog that .. well the koon thought lets play.. he was not …. Sad…
Maybe if my dog would snap at the rabbit or nip him back the rabbit would back off.. Not in my dogs nature. After Neuter.. I am going to try had that week.. since rabbit will be sore….. and not into chasing the dog…………. Right now the rabbit.. Newton is circleing my feet doing the horney dance.. so cute.. One week to go………….
I love my Crazy Rabbit.. and my dog.. and after Next week.. the 23rd after Neuter will let you all know How things are going…
I will say that this rabbit litter trainging thing.. a breeze.. and they are clean things.. even when they eat there Poos’s.. they drop one here and there but eat them up.. fine with me.. Grass, veg, all good.
I believe just like a puppy… after the two year mark.. all will be good..!
Read all resonses.. luv them and thanks.. this is the best site ever I found on Rabbits..
Thank you, Binkybunny.. http://www.binkyfunny.com
Just a quick comment on the scratching, it is pretty normal for bunnies to not enjoy being picked up. Since they are a prey animal they enjoy being secure on the ground where they know they can make a quick get-away if they need too!
Instead, can you put his cage in an area where he can run around right outside of it? Then you just have to open up his cage to let him in and out. You can put an exercise pen up like RabbitPam suggested, and surround his cage with it if you want, and then you don’t have to pick him up so often. All of my bunnies I only pick up to do nail trims, and they all still HATE being picked up!
I hope that he is doing well after his neuter, it does seem like boys go a liiiitle crazy about this time if they haven’t been neutered.
My arms look like I have tried to commit suiced many times.
Hahah I had to laugh at this
Petzy — (watching David and Goliath: a 4 lb bunny vs. a 120 lbs dog. ) Wow.. when I read that.
My dog is about 20lbs.. lol.
When I got Newton I was worred about Rags my dog attacking the rabbit Newton. Yet he was great with the Guienue pig. Sorry could never spell Guienie pig right. The pig couldn’t run like this rabbit. The dog just licked him. Newton did nothing on the hard word floors. Sill he discovered carpet and how quick he could be.
I think one day I will lover the cage on the floor and leave the door open to an area in the room he is in. I can not stand it when he is hanking and pulling on the door. Breaks my heart .. yet it is my dogs turn to be with me. I wanted a smarter pet and I sure got one. Sharing the Luv is tough.
Time to run.. Newton time out soon. Thanks..
Welcome!!
He shacks the cage with his teeth so hard, I wonder how they do not bleed.
You can put a sheet over the cage when it’s ‘bedtime’ I’ve found this really helps
Once you get your rabbit neutered, he will calm down in respect to most things. Until then I would not let the dog around the rabbit, if the rabbit bites him he may bite back (not to hurt) but it could hurt the rabbit of course!
Maybe if my dog would snap at the rabbit or nip him back the rabbit would back off..
DO NOT encourage this at all!! Please!
Give your bunny about a month after the neuter to calm down-it will take some time for the horomones to die down
I think one day I will lover the cage on the floor and leave the door open to an area in the room he is in. I can not stand it when he is hanking and pulling on the door. Breaks my heart ..
The sheet over the cage will really help. Also if you can play music or a TV for him during the day, with lights on->this will encourage him to be up during the day-and sleep at night
Hey all! Newton got Neutered today. Was nothing like I thought it would be. Vet told me bunnies bounce back fast, some go home like when they came in. Well he had the dissolving stitches and glue. Brought him home and just open the carrier and let him come out on his own. He did and went into the furnace room by he cage and laid there like a cat mad. About an hour later he hooped to his litterbox across the room and well.. you know. Then he went back to the same spot and laid there lifeless for hours. At 7:30 I brought him water. His drinking bottle, and he finally drank and ate one piece of spinich. I then finally got the nerve to pick him up and put him in his cage. He did kick. Yet now he must feel safe in his habbitat and shortly will cover the cage with a sheet so he can sleep in peace. Poor thing. Picking Newton up was and is never a problem, just getting him in the cage ws his issue.
Last night he was dancing around me for hours and wanting to hump my leg. When he did get a grip he would bite my ankle. So I was convinced the Neutering thing would be a good thing. I remain hopeful. He is a sad looking crazy bunny tonight. Till tomorrow.. lights out. Deannaline
My monkey spent the first night laying there feelign sorry for herself after her spay. The next day she was better. The pain meds helped, thats for sure. She looooves her metacam! lol. Give him his fav foods and he’ll be hard pressed to not eat em. I know Monkey couldn’t resist her carrot tops and raisins! I kept her cage confined for the first couple days so she could heal a bit and not go all excited over anything and pull her stitches.
Pain Meds.. I got nothing like that.
He did not eat the hole day .. and was still like death. Second day he eat some.. but did not bother to shake the cage to get out. Today he shaked the cage… ate.. is out… and well.. I think I have to now rescue him from under the stairs in the Christmas decor..
His nuts are the size of grapes today.
I let him out tonight. Seem just fine… into everything.. and eating today.
Do they ever stop getting into everything… he is under the stairs tonight in a cubby hole where my Christmas Decorations are. I can’t seem him but here him and it sounds like a coon in the garbage.
