OK, this is a dumb question but……

Do you really put both rabbits in a carrier together?  I’d be terrified to do that w/ my rabbits.  So do I put each in a separate carrier and have them lined up next to each other?  Or should I just have a litterbox in the back seat and someone to monitor?

Jessica & Leo are bonded (very well) for a few years.  Chewbacca is new and I will start some real bonding once I hit 1 mos post spay.  Currently she is allowed freetime and has a litterbox next to Jess & Leo’s condo.  She loves going in there & pooping it up.  I have found that sometimes this “overly excites” Jessica and then Jessi runs around & sometime’s gets a bit aggressive w/ Leo.  She actually took fur off of him last week.  Do I need to be scared that I might ruin their bond?

Well, I’m not the expert of the FL’s, but I am pretty sure you can put them both in the carrier together since the shared experience of the motion is what helps create the bond.

Above is the link to the BB info. section on Bonding. You can also look at the Bonding Journals if you haven’t checked it all out already. You’ll find many helpful answers and procedures there.

Put them both in a carrier together, this stress lets them find comfort in the other rabbit. Still make sure that the original two have time together and be prepared to set up some small sessions between just them to ensure that their bond is still there. I would suggest doing small bath tub sessions or car rides first. It would be best to have them in one carrier and you or someone else sitting next to them just in case a scuffle happens.

When we were bonding Bunny & Alistair we would use a large plastic storage bin. We had a grid (NIC type) separating them and a towel secured tightly over top, or a lid on the bin until we got them into the van. Then once we in the van and driving, I would take the lid off the top (or if it was a towel I was using I would leave it on), and remove the grid that was between them. This prevented them from fighting before we got in the van, and then once the van was going they were so scared that they would just huddle up together.

For new bonds, I personally would use a high-sided box of some kind so you can reach in to separate them if needed. Jessica & Leo could go for a ride together in a carrier though, to help with any issues they might be having at the moment.

Do I do the bathtub sessions & car rides w/ both the bonded pair & the newby OR just one of the bonded & the newby.  If its one bonded & newby, do I plop the bonded one w/ their previous bond immediately following their tub or ride session?

I’ve read the bonding journals & tips and am just so terrified.  I want to plan it out as best as possible….Thanks

I am a strong proponent of paired bonding meaning two buns only until they get along and then paring up the newby with the reaming bun. soometimes you can get away with trio sessions from the beginning, though. Try each rabbit with the newby and see how the are, I think you’ll find you want to do paired sessions, especially if you are without assistant. It can get busy with three. You can put the old pair back together right after the session but observe: any aggression about the strange scent should not last too long. The stressed bun (having done a session) might sit in a corner confused but only for a while.

I don’t think I’d use a closed top carrier in the car… but a large box or laundry basket would work.

I bonded Chilly & Dusty with the car rides. The car ride does chill them out and make them rely on each other for support. I use a small carrier where they can both turn around inside comfortably. Then it’s off to the car ride. I drive to my boyfriend’s every weekend and have them travel with me. They’ve definately bonded with each other more faster than I’d expected.

They didn’t do well in the bathtub, but the car rides are something they’ve learned to lean on each other on.
