We recently changed Spencer’s living arrangements and gave him a larger penned in area with his original cage inside the penned area.  He stays in the penned area while we are out during the day and then is let out to roam around the room when we are home.  Is it possible that he now considers his entire penned in area his cage?  He seems to be a little aggressive now inside the penned area where he lunges at you and grunts when you’re inside.  This doesn’t happen outside this area.  He was never really territorial about his cage too much.  He’d nose around if you were cleaning it, but never bit or lunged.  What do you think?

Hmmm … strange! It sounds like he does now consider the pen “his” area and is protecting it.

How old is he? Is he neutered?

We’re not sure how old he is. We adopted him in August with really no info on him. We just got him neutered about 4 weeks ago. Last night while we had the guinea pigs out exercising in the same room and do this every night with no problems. Last night he lunged at one of them that entered “his pen” area even though it was open and he could come and go.

              Lisa,
Pebbles was the same way when I first set up her huge xpen and placed her “cage” in the middle. She “chinned” everything and was very territorial for the first 2 months. Now that she as been fixed for 3 months, she doesn’t seem to mind if I step in her xpen area to clean or move about. I always bring a few rasins or a 1 inch chunk of carrot with me and put that at the other side of the xpen…. so she knows that it is a treat for me to go into her area.
Hang in there – you may even it a nip or two until Spencer figures out that you are not taking away his turf.

He must like his new pen because he was never so territorial about his small cage. Well, looking on the bright side, he must be happy with it. Haha! Thanks for your insight!
