Hey, all! Bean has been a sleepyhead all morning. He’s hidden out in his cardboard castle and not behaving “normally”. He seems to be very tired. He’s doing the stretched-out Sphinx, looking very relaxed, not tense and not tooth-grinding (unless I come over and pet him and he tooth-purrs a bit). From the looks of his litterbox, he’s been excreting normally overnight. From the looks of his hay-pile, he made some inroads into it, so he seems to have eaten. Now we did have a major storm front come through last night. It poured rain all night long and we had some very strong wind gusts along with high wind in general. It’s also hunting season and we have burrheads blasting away even after dark. So, could it just be a case of a very unrestful night and he’s just tired or should I be more concerned? He’s a minature, half lionhead, half jersey wooly–I did feel around on his belly, but it feels normal to me, not tight or distended in any way, so I’m thinking stasis isn’t the problem.
Any mind-easing would be greatly appreciated!
From the sound of it, I would say he might be sleepy because he has been alert and watchful all night. I don’t think I would be nervous. Just keep an eye on him.
Actually, both Karl and Molly have days when they are very tired and just sleep all day.
Thanks, Karla! He was like this one day earlier this week. Late afternoon rolled around and he perked right up. I’ll be surprised if the poor guy gets much sleep today–the wind’s died down, but the rain’s coming down in buckets out there!
The biggest problem with buns? They make you worry about them. A lot. Back to Mother-Hen-Fuss-Around mode.

Haha! How true! I’m a new bunny parent, with Marlee being my first but I’m constantly worrying/thinking about her. My family always says I’m like that annoying mother who stands over a person’s shoulder when holding their child. I just can’t help it. ![]()
It might be an idea to ply him with some wet greens just as a precaution. Stress can bring on gut slowdowns so if you think he got terribly stressed from the storm & hunting noises – just watch for any symptoms. Was he freaked out? They can get injection of adrenaline into the system then have the after effects of that.

Don’t worry -you can join my club! My dog doesn’t go outside (in our fenced, videotaped, crime free neighborhood!) without me!! I go out with him and at worst-we watch him from a window.. ; hahah totalky neurotic with you!
Here is my favorite BIG word for the day: CREPUSCULAR.
That is what bunnies are. That means they are most active at dawn and dusk. (Nocturnal being animals that stay up all night and sleep all day, Diurnal are those that are awake all day, you get the picture.)
Because of that, they have sort of weird sleeping habits. You’ll see them in a really deep sleep between 3 and 5, then jump up with tons of energy. Or they’ll go zombie like not long after breakfast. They may play around until 9PMish, but then be sleeping soundly at 2AMish. So sometimes you catch them after a morning romp and they’re ready for a nap.
Also, the weather does effect all of us. I don’t know if you notice a change on rainy days, but it’s partly due to the barometric pressure dropping, and we get droopy as well. The watchfulness is a good assumption, since a bunny’s hearing is excellent, so a storm may not induce sleep at all. They definitely nap if kept awake.
Just keep watching the food and poos. He sounds OK so far.
We had another big storm front come in last night. Normally, he’s the world’s best bun about bunny-bedtime, but not last night. He did not want to go into his x-pen, not no way, not no how. So…..we moved the pen and his put-and-take-its to the other side of the living room, as far from the big front windows as we could get. Then he got into it.. From the looks of things, no overnight poos, but he did eat some of his pellets and, hopefully, some hay. The level in his water dish also looks lower. When I let him out about 10 minutes ago, he went charging around, inspecting all the room changes and just did a big flop next to the wall. Currently, he’s all stretched out with his hind feet behind him.
When it got over 90 here this summer (and, lucky us, the heat pump/AC unit died), I tried feeding him wet greens, but he won’t eat them. Even his romaine has to sit for a few hours so that it gets dry on the outside and nice and limp. Cold and/or wet things, he’s not excited about eating. So, after I get his bunny-box changed this morning, I think I’ll be keeping an eye on him and worrying. I hope he can get used to the sounds–fall and winter storm fronts are not unusual around here and they can be pretty noisy.
Poor guy. It’s good you’ve noticed that he’s not himself. It really might not be a cause for concern, maybe he’s just in a mood, but as long as you’re watching. Keep us updated…
Just a quick update–Bean was pretty listless all morning and didn’t eat anything that I could see. I even tried some fresh apple on him and nope. That’s *very* odd for him, so I called the vet’s office. Luckily, they’re open today until 3 and both bun-savvy vets were in. I now know he weighs 4.3 lbs. (Who knew? He looks so small and fluffed!). The vet said he doesn’t appear to be dehydrated. She could feel fecal material in “the pipeline” so to speak, getting ready to be excreted. She also said she couldn’t feel any signs of stasis. His teeth look great and she said the hay/Oxbow pellets/papaya-pineapple tabs (Thanks BinkyBunny!) diet is a good one, since he’s shiny, healthy and a good weight for his size.
So….might be the last two noisy nights combined with me trying to do the “right” thing and moving his stuff. Just to be on the safe side, she gave him a shot of stuff to help with his digestive tract motility and a shot of a mild pain-killer. I also came home with several more doses of both and will be keeping an eye on him.
All in all, he was a very brave bun, indeed and he seems to be very happy to be back home.
That all sounds good. He seems well to the vet, but she gave him precautionary assistance just in case. We all need a little help in our litter box now and then. Sounds like a good poop and a nice long nap will have him better soon.

Feel better vibes for Bean. Glad you took him in.
Thanks, guys. I knew if I didn’t take him in, nobody would’ve gotten any sleep with me checking on Bean every 15 minutes. And Mike, big tough guy, would’ve been sneaking in on his own 15 minute schedule to check as well. I just figured much, much, much better safe than sorry.
Sounds like your vet did a good job and so we can now just hope that the weather settles down or Bean gets used to things.
Keep us updated.
Thankfully, no new weather fronts, at least for tonight. He got the meds at about 3pm and just started shaking off the, “Whoa! Dude! Have you ever looked at your paw? I mean, *really* looked at it??!?” drowsies about 30 minutes ago. He ate most of the apple slice I’d tried to ply him with earlier and then started moving around the room more normally. He’s eaten some hay, a little romaine and one pellet that I hand-fed him. And has drunk a bunch of water. He made a quick litter box trip, but I think it was just peeage.
His x-pen’s been moved back to its normal location and he’s been rooting around in the hay, so he’s much more normal overall. I think I’ll give him another dose of the motility stuff, but lay off the pain killer; he doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort and I’d rather he ate and excreted instead of laying around stoned out of his little bunny gourd.
30 minutes until 11pm and his next dose. Thanks, everyone for the good thoughts! He’s such a brave little guy and we both love him like crazy.
No pellets this morning (at 6am), but he came bounding out of the x-pen and did some speed-bunnying around the living room. *Much* more like normal! He had some hay this morning and a very small piece of freeze-dried strawberry, one more dose of the motility stuff and “Houston, we have bunny-bombs!”
He’s hit the litter box again since then with some more success and hay seems to be a very tasty thing again. The vet said we could stop either or both meds if Bean seemed better, so I think I’ll stop them both now. His stools are kind of soft and, with him eating, drinking and acting more normally, I think good hay will take care of things from here.
Thank you all for all the good vibes. Bunny-folk are the best!
Pellets are normally the last food that they will go back to. Pepe took about a week after his recent stasis problem to eat his pellets – he’s one of my only pellet eaters.
That’s good news! Sounds like Bean is on his way back to normal!
Thanks goodness!
Yay! I wasn’t going to give him any more motility stuff, but yesterday afternoon he was laying across the room from me and doing an occasional tooth-click. Normally, he only does that when he’s getting pets. So, naturally, I freaked and gave him another dose. I think it was just “happiness clicks”, now. He was laying stretched out and looked relaxed. Not doing a lot of position changes or looking anxious at all.
In any case, I had my “speed bunny” back when I let him out this morning. No more drugs since yesterday afternoon and he’s been hitting his little box. Poos are still pretty small for him, but they’re looking more and more normal. He’s been eating hay and his greens like a little champ again, drinking lots of water and being my normal Bean-bun. Lots of nose bumps when an ankle is “in his way”. We’ve got another front going through, but in spite of all the wind and noise, he’s sitting across the room doing a detailed bunny bath. I think he’s finally figured out that the wind and rain sounds won’t hurt him (thank the god(s) and/or goddess(es) of your choice!). My apologies for all the worry-warting. It was nice, though, to get confirmation from the vet on how healthy he is (and he appreciated being told what a particularly handsome and brave bun he was by the vet).
Oh good. Sounds like a happy “speedy” bunny who is no longer afraid of the rain! And no need to apologize, rabbits by nature turn us into worry-warts!
