         Hi Guys

Just want to ask a quick question, between my girlfriend and me we have 3 female rabbits. All have had there op in the last few months and now they chew everything they can find, I even saw one eating a brick! Is this usual and will it slowing stop one day. OR are we just unluck and got 3 chewers?

        Thanks

        Jonathan

So all 3 are mad chewers since the op? That’s interesting… It could be still bunny teenagers. (I looked back at you last post – you said the pair is 8 months?) How old is the third? They are all in the same household now?

I’m not sure if it could still be related to hormones but they do take a little while to completly leave the system. Chewing is a form of play and good for rabbits to do but it can be destructive! Try providing lots or alternatives to chew. Willow baskets or sticks, a “hay bungalow”, apple wood, sea grass mats & HAY, HAY, HAY!! Do they get unlimited hay? I find my rabbits go to town chewing things that are “stationary” that is they can really tear at something and it doesn’t move about like chew toys can do.

          How do they seem otherwise?

I just found this Q&A that is a little similar – regarding 8 month old rabbit just spayed. Maybe that might give bit of a clue to what’s going on.

I think it could be hormonal. Spaying whacks out the hormones – only natural that should happen. Whacked out hormones are not fun either – the body is just doing weird things.

Some rabbits do outgrow the chewing and some may be lifelong chewers. I agree with Jersey, find something for them to chew on while they are going through this stage.

Ha, I went through that as well. Karl was a living hell after being fixed. He chewed the walls, chewed every cord he could find, he peed in the sofa and everything was just chaos around him. It settled after 3 weeks though, I think.

But yes I agree with the others – get loads of chewing stuff.

Thanks Guys, We give them as much to chew as possible including my slippers while i am wearing them. We tried to see if they like each recently and two of them when for each other so we are holding back a while before bonding.

My bunnies are all pretty much big chewers – I have found that their favorite (and most economical) distraction is cardboard boxes. I put them up-side down, and cut a little tunnel in them for my bunnies to squeeze in and out of. Then, they usually go to town expanding the tunnel, and jumping up on top of the box to tear at the roof, and it distracts them from my carpet!
