Wow, this has been a busy day!

I got caught up in doing other chores so was late cleaning bunny habitats. After I got Fiver done, I began Pip’s pen and suddenly there were clouds of ‘hare’ everywhere! So I spent about an hour just pulling fluff off Pip. Now she’s a vigorous shedder usually, but it’s like the whole coat decided to come out today. I literally filled her litter box with her own fur.

She still has a little ‘skirt’ around her rear haunces and up her sides, but most of her fur has come down to just next to velvet. And of course, her royal mane is still with us.

She is not too happy with me at the moment.

Mimzy wound up having to wait hours for his pen to be cleaned. He looked like that when I got to him.

Fiver has been in a state of shed for over a month or two now. It just won’t stop coming. And he’s all patchy looking. He is SO nasty when it comes to grooming, too. He still attacks the love glove the minute it shows up. I still have the scar on my arm from where he bit me two weeks ago.

Would it ever become necessary for a bunny to have some kind of professional grooming or shave? I’m especially concerned about how much of this stuff Fiver is swallowing.

Valen sheds all the time! I am always cleaning clumps of fur off of things! I just cleaned his cage yesterday and had tons of bunny hair!

Well it was Fiver’s turn to get ‘gloved’ today. Need I say, he was not too happy.
I’ve never been boxed, snapped at, grunted at so much by any of the bunnies as by him. And of course when that doesn’t work he plays the sympathy card and whines at me to make me stop. It just breaks my heart.
I know RabbitPam has dealt with rex sheds. And I am jealous of how lovely LizzieKnittyBun’s Remy has such a gorgeous coat…like satin and velvet. I wonder if either he or Spockie ever had a motley pelt that looked like he fell asleep on the lawn while it was being mowed? I want Fiver to look like Remy, but his fur just won’t cooperate and I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong with how I’m grooming or feeding him that would cause him to have such a ragged look?
Now neither he nor Pip will pose for pictures. (Pip is not about to have me spread her shame all over the internet.) But if I can manage to get one or two, I’ll post them so you all can see what I mean. Their fur has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous!
Fortunately Mimzy doesn’t seem to be prone to the same shed currently…but I know it’s just waiting there like a bomb ready to go off. 0_o

My Hunny Bunny loses tons of fur and I use a furminator on her that she don’t like me using unless I take her outside in the yard, she holds still. I also use the vacum cleaner nozzle on her and she don’t mind the vacuum at all.

We have to get Bunny shaved on occasion, but only her bum and under her chin. She is a long hair rabbit, and doesn’t let us groom these areas, so they sometimes get matted and we take her in to the vet to get those parts shaved if necessary. I would say if your buns are short-haired you would likely never need to get them groomed/shaved.

Sorry you’re having to deal with all the furry craziness, I know the feeling.

                  MM,
Sorry for the delay in responding.
Anyway, no, Spockie never seemed to shed in large patches and I’ve actually never seen a bunny “blow his coat.” He shed steadily for at least a month. I would brush him and get large clumps of fur in the brush, and there’d be fur all over generally though. But I’ve learned that all these buns are different and a dramatic, patchy shed that looks ugly tends to be normal. Spockie looked more like he wanted his fur spiked for a punk look if you can picture that. It was progressively worse because I remember knowing when we were near the end. I also plucked those tempting little tufts.

BT and I both got the Hair Buster comb, ordered online, and Sammy has grown tolerant of it. It does a better job than a brush. I have to give her head pets on the floor with one hand and comb with the other, but Spockie was much more pliable. Here’s a link. I think you can get it from more than just the one source.  http://www.hairbuster.com/combs.html

The only thing that worries me about the Furminator or a vacuum hose are the reports of quickly taking too much off. I wouldn’t want the skin to be damaged in any way, so better to do a gentler groom much more frequently than a heavy duty one that pulls too much or too hard. I do a lot of passes when I pet, never just pet, during shedding time. Every little bit helps.

                    Thanks Pam.
Hm…well it looks like a nice comb, but…it isn’t too toothy for a rex’s fur? 0_o *gently pokes comb teeth* They look awfully sharp?
And I assume the one I would be looking to buy would be the shorthair one. I think even on Pip’s longer locks, I wouldn’t want one heavier duty than this.
Oh, and I do try to get a swipe off him any chance I get. But he’s no dummy. He sees that hand coming and, if it doesn’t have a cookie in it, it’s time for a grunt, lunge or warning nip. lolz.

Yes, it’s a serious comb. I just find that the little cat brushes are too soft and don’t get any fur off at all. I try to be as gentle as possible, but Sammy hasn’t blown her coat yet so we’ll see how it does in a big shed.

                      “He’s no dummy” LOL

I went to the site, but was disappointed as, even when I followed all instructions and put the item in my cart correctly, it kept telling me I had nothing in my cart. (grrr)
Maybe the site was having hiccups. I’ll try again in a few days. ^_^
Need one of these for Shadow too. He’s finally getting some fur back after almost a year since his big shave!
