The yesterdays news we are using now is getting to expensive so i was wondering if you could us some of that egg crate stuff to make a grate and grate litterbox and then put unscented clumping kitty litter under?![]()
I would not take a chance whatsoever with clumping litter. The risk is too great that they your rabbit may ingest this and the outcome as you can imagine, not so good.
What about wood stove pellets (without accelerant) can you find that where you live? Or those wood pellets used for horse stalls – I use a brand called Lone Star Bedding that is a wood pelleted litter. It’s $6.00 for 35 pounds.
here the problem though is that the only safe bedding whatsoever that i can find is Carefresh and YN and the are so expensive here and aspen is the same story and DJ doesn’t use wood chips well.
Are you talking about the Aspen shavings that he doesn’t use well?
yes he doesn’t like the texture on his feet.Because he will go if there is YN or Carefresh in it but not wood shavings of any kind he goes beside the bx when that is in it.

Carrot, you might find this thread helpful

If it’s economy you are looking for I ditto Sarita: all-natural wood stove pellets (the chemical-free kind) Even a box lined with egg-diffuser grate might allow a determined bunny to have access to kitty litter underneath and it could pose a hazard. When using any material that isn’t digestible the grate would have to be securely attached to prevent a rabbit from digging at it and lifting it.
what about nonclumping clay litter?
That could be okay if it’s is dustless.
You have to be careful with any clay litter though as it could cause a respiratory infection or possible GI irritation.
Carrotlane, here is a link you might want to check out. I’ve bought some of their products and they are really economical.

I would still go with wood stove pellets. Though you won’t find them in a petstore

They will be in home depot/home hardware type stores, and they are VERY cheap-about 6$ for 55lbs.
These are safe to use; as others have said-i would not trust any cat litter-even non clumping or unscented. It’s not worth the vet bills!
Carrot, for some reason I have you down as residing in B.C. that’s why I posted the link to Equine Pine. The company is out of B.C., also.
Ahem… can someone enlighten me what “bump” means??? huh?

I’d be interested to hear other remedies for litter. I’ve been using World’s Best Cat Litter. I love it. It’s made from corn and does clump for easy clean up. I’ve been using it with Chilly for 3 years now, but since I got Dusty who’s a lot bigger and drinks a LOT more water than her, I’m looking for a better solution because like most of your concerns, the cost of bags add up FAST!
Has anyone used All Living Thing’s corner pans? It has a grate inside the pan. I was thinking of investing in it, but still unsure my bunnies would use it because they tend to snack on the litter while in the box. Also, should I put litter in it under the grate, but wouldn’t it defeat the purpose of trying to conserve and not buy litter?
Chilly, I imagine from your avatar that your rabbits aren’t dwarfs. Those corner pans are a great concept but they are just too small, IMO.
One of my litterboxes for my rabbits is grated. It is a small cage and I don’t have to put absorbent material underneath the grate, just a sheet of newsprint to make clean-up easy. If you don’t want to change that daily I recommend using some litter material for odor control. You can use cat litter under a grate if it is dustfree. I put lots of hay on top of my grate and in the morning all that hay has been eaten and all the poo and pee is under the grate.
Yes, those corner pans are terrible. They just really are not practical.
Honestly too the corn stuff is bad as well as this could cause impaction.
Have you looked for any of the wood type pellets…best bet, safest and cheap.
Sarita, what is this cornstuff? I’m not familiar with it. What part of corn?
I’m not familiar with the particular one that Chilly’s Mom uses but the one I know of is just corn cobs and it can cause impaction – they sell it at pet stores around my area.
Also she mentions as well that this one clumps which means that if it is eaten it could cause impaction. Also rabbits cannot digest corn either (but then again what animal or human can :~).
I’ve used the World’s BestCat Litter (comes in a yellow plastic bag from Petsmart) with Chilly for 3 years now. But now I’m worried about all clumping litters. Dusty eats the litter whereas Chilly doesn’t. I just got Dusty recently and noticing that I’m going through a lot of litter with this hefty girl. I like Petzy’s method of newspaper liner for the pan. So is it as easy as taking a medium tupperware box and lining it with newspaper then putting grass on top of that?
Well it looks like the price you pay for that you can get Yesterday’s News – it seems to be more in the bag too and that’s safe for rabbits…at least from what I can tell on-line at Petco.
If Dusty’s eating alot of it, could be why she’s drinking alot too…Maybe trial another type and see whether her drinking lessens. You may end up using less litter then after all.
Newsprint doesn’t do much for odor control but if you change often it’s fine especially if you only have 2 rabbits.
