Freya is of the opinion that cilantro is by far the most delicious veggie on earth. We’ve never tried kale because it’s never on sale here. We usually just give Freya a whole thing of cilantro when we get it for her. We keep her at once a week when we do the super duper thorough condo cleaning. It’s the only thing that keeps her from hating us forever.

 Kale is higher in Vitamin A and calcium and for most bunnies this is not a problem to feed in moderation everyday, (though I have always recommended just a few times a week because I have had bunnies that are more sensitive)  but even if you make it part of your bunny’s daily diet, you don’t want to make it the main ingredient in her bunny salad. Some bunnies do have problems processing calcium and so if you notice a white sludge that begins to develop in her urine then you will want to cut back or eliminate it.     For Kale, you could start off with 1/3 cup of chopped Kale for the first week of introduction, and then later add cilantro. As you add more greens, you can give her more of the “mix” and follow the diet guidelines (under diet) for the amount of greens for her weight.

I give my Hunny Bunny kale once in awhile and she is crazy about it. If I buy a small bunch, since I feed her greens to her in the morning as soon as I get up, I continue to feed the kale to her in moderation until it is all gone so there is no waste or so it don’t get stale and loose it’s vitamin goodness. I heard that Kale works somewhat on rabbits like catnip is to cats. I don’t know how true that is but I notice that Hunny does do a lot more binkies after she has had some. I do love to make her little salads with a bit of everything in it like a bit of kale, grated carrot, craisins, cut up fresh green beans from the garden, pea pods, etc. She is so into the habit of having her salads in the mornings that if I dont give it to her right away, she gets very impatient and starts to follow me around right by the heels of my feet so I have to be careful where I step

i usually dont buy kale for buttons for two reasons:

1. the giant eagle near me sells really teeny bunches that would last him about a day
2. it super duper expensive

buttons favs i always buy are:
1. romaine lettuce
2.cilantro
3.parsley
4.carrot tops

butons get veggies each day!

any more than a few leaves of cilanto results in some major poopy butt on gizmo.

i’m a bit apprehensive of kale.

Both Buns LOVE Cilantro

Nobody likes Kale OR Swiss Chard. SO PICKY!
I bought a lovely ( and expensive) bunch of Swiss Chard this week.. It lays there wilting on the mat. They only eat it in the afternoon when there is nothing left.

But Cilantro and Flat leaf parlsey? LOOK OUT. You can’t get your hands out of the way fast enough!

My rabbits get cilantro daily. They love kale – I get dinosaur kale at Whole Foods when I get it but it’s pricey – they love it though.

I grow mint out in my back yard too just for Hunny and she loves that. I have to be careful though because it gives her the “sticky poops”

BunBun and Nelli love kale, but I’m afraid to give them too much because of the high Vit. A and calcium content. I try to get a small bunch every couple months, and give them a few leaves a day until it’s gone.
I spend A LOT of $$$ on fresh greens! It’s the #1 reason for my hitting the grocery store every couple days. Then of course when I’m there I decide this looks good and I should get that to make for dinner and ooh- I should really bake something today too- and $100 later, I leave the store. But the buns get their greens and that’s the important thing- lol.

Carrot Tops- they LOVE these but usually the tops are nasty and slimy- not edible for my darlings!

That’s about it- they won’t touch cilantro or mint (Too bad cuz I have TONS of mint growing by my kitchen door) and romaine gives BunBun poopy bum. And Swiss Chard- which I have also splurged on, Baleful Regards- they won’t touch it! Spoiled buns.

I have never had bunnies that like them either!  They might nibble, but most of the time I find mustard greens untouched and wilted the next morning.  I wish Jack and Vivian liked them because they would be a good addition low-calcium type of green!  I still try to sneak them in every once in awhile – not sure why I do that as so far nothing has ever changed – they snub their nose at it. 

I can’t get my buns to eat any herb except for Italian parsley. Mint, cilantro, basil, etc…they won’t touch it. They just glare at me till I take it away.
Now they love kale, but I never give it more than once a week because I don’t want to overfeed Vitamin A (I do have to up that during winter) nor do I want to cause poopy butt issues. Sadly, we only get large batches up here and most of it spoils by second week.

I think I asked in an ancient post here what kinds of recipes one could use kale for that I could use the remainder of the batch for myself, but I haven’t been industrious enough to try them yet. I should probably think about eating a little kale during the colder months here, when we lose sunlight.

I think I’m pretty fortunate in that my bunnies are a bit picky about their greens. No laundry list that I have to pick and sniff and complain to my produce counter about. Romaine, green leaf lettuce, the occasional carrot/broccoli piece (or apple/banana) for a touch of sweet-with the exception of Fiver who doesn’t seem to like fruit…and Sunday is always kale day. I tear the leaf off the stalk and just feed that. They don’t seem to like that stringy stem.

This weekend I just brought home a bagged lettuce that was listed as “sweet butter” which seems to be the first sprouts of radicchio, romaine and some other type of green leaf lettuce I can’t identify…(probably the ‘butter’ portion). Not only did the bunnies enjoy the different taste, but I’ve polished a few bowls off myself.

Black oil sunflower seeds go wonderfully ontop of Hunny’s salads but they do have a tendency to give poopy butt syndrome and I have to wash her little bummy.

G&S- mustard greens are soooooooooooo icky(or so buttons tells me). they are leafy and sortof pale green. its the only veggie he wont eat, i swear on my life. lol
