Well, my bunny will eat anything on the floor and believe me, we have tried everything to stop him and he always has food in his bowl but still does it, hec, he even eats my dog’s food. Well anyway, my mom was eating some cheerios and he started to eat some. Well that was a couple days ago and he seems fine. I read the ingredients and there is nothing in there that he CAN’T have. So in case you would like to know of a good treat that you may or may not have around the house a lot, Honey Nut Cheerios are a way to go!![]()

Well, this is really something that a rabbit should have – rabbits are herbivores and these types of treats can lead to fatty liver disease, obesity and other health problems. I imagine they love these as treats and in small amounts the regular Cheerios in very small quantities may be okay but they aren’t truly the best treat for our rabbits.
I am guilty of giving treats too that may not be the best either but I think the best treats are an assortment of hays or some fresh herbs.
This probably falls under the same list of things such as donuts, not good for them but won’t kill them. I’ve never given Freya a bite of my donut… never. Really. Why don’t you believe me?
Honey Nut Cheerios have a higher sugar (carb) content than regular Cheerios. A Honey Nut Cheerio for a Bunny is like a Snickers Bar to us- not healthy- but really tasty.
Once in a while we just need that bad for us tasty fix. It almost seems cruel to deny that precious little furball the same. After all, unless you choke on it a Snickers bar every so often isn’t going to kill you.
I have tried giving a Cheerio (plain) or two when I run out of usual treats. Nobunny trusts them. They just sit on the floor till I pick them up and haul them away. Makes me wonder if I should really be eating them either. 0_o
It’s funny, Mimzy is one of those rabbits who goes gonzo for the sweets. He loves dried fruit. Heck he loves hydrated fruit. And carrots. It kills me to have to ration them because I can just see that glint of joy in his big brown eyes when he smells a sliver of banana on the way.
And yet, I’ve tried these things with Pip & Fiver and while she will sometimes take a nibble and enjoy, Fiver turns them down flat. Bananas. Apples. He won’t have anything to do with them.
Open up that APD cookie bag though, and he’s jonesin’…claws at the bars to his pen and sticks his nose out to sniff. Count your fingers after dispensing. But anything even remotely sweet tends to make his cecals very soft and mushy and then he steps in them and gets poopy butt (AND foot). So you know, it’s just not worth the agony to have him go through that.
And then, of course, they won’t eat their hay if they get too much sugar, so….
Now about that stash of Reese’s peanut butter cups in my fridge….*hums*…What? I only have one a day. Honest! ^_^
Reese’s in the fridge? I’m omw to Alaska.
Be sure to bring Freya with you! ^_^
im pretty dang strict with buttons when it comes to feeding people food of any kind. i just think that no matter what the ingredients are, they flat out shouldnt have it. his diet is strictly bunny: pellets/grass hay/ romaine lettuce. the farthest i go for treats is a slice or apple or a few raisins. im worried that if he gets too much sugar from people food, he would get sick.
Sunny love’s cheerios. It’s ridiculous how nuts she goes for them. I’m such a sucker for her face, I always have to give her a few of the Honey Nut. As for the Regular, I’m not sure, I’ve never bought them because I don’t like them, LOL, so if she likes them or not, I have no clue.
I’m familiar with this in our house… I discovered Bunner’s climbing antics when I found him eating a bowl of Cinnamon Life I had left on what I thought was a safe surface while in the restroom.
Unfortunately the sound of the cereal box packaging is a lot like his treat package (veggie crisps), so he is convinced I’m hiding them from him when he hears the noise and doesn’t get anything.
Cotton loves cheerios. He gets them on occassion 1 or 2. Lately when I am eating he comes to beg and he is so hard to resist.
He stands on his hind legs ears all up. If I dont’ give him any he jumps on me They sure like stuff that isn’t good for them.
Well can you blame them? If I could live off of chocolate, pizza, ice cream and Mtn Dew I certainly would. Can’t really blame a bun for trying. I made muddy buddies last night and Freya keeps looking at me when I eat them. I know she can smell them and I feel so guilty eating in front of her but I really don’t think she should have them.
mmm muddy buddies. I think I’ve just been inspired to make snacks.
Cheerios are a big hit here, mine love a Cheerio every once in a while! Cheerios = binkies! (Just one every few days though!)
I admit nothing-nothing about giving my buns unhealthy treats…never done it…nope never…why don’t you believe me?
Ok maybe once I shared a granola bar bite or so….or some oats…
Chubs ate a fruit loop once…when one dropped on to the floor and he was too quick for me. It didn’t hurt him any but I’m pretty strict with his food! He only gets fruit for treats and he loves it so much that I don’t feel guilty not giving him other people foods. He goes crazy for craisins and banana, and really I would worry too much if I gave him people food! Their little digestive systems are too sensitive for me to trust any non-furit veggie bunny items in there…but I’m a paranoid bunny mom. I can admit it. ![]()
alright fine…i have done the un spoken.. shared human food wiht my bunny…only once though! never again, i promise! i was leaning over eating an oatmeal cookie and he grabbed a bite and ran. just once. no more i promise ![]()
I thought I was strict, but now I KNOW for sure I am… LOL!
Bella smelled carrot on my breath the other night.. so I gave her half… half of a skinny little “baby carrot” ..mind you… and I only gave her that cuz she wasn’t gonna give me “night night” kisses if I didn’t!
I know what you mean about your bunny eating *anything* that hits the floor. My Torri once ate a bit of (cooked) ground beef that fell and she was way too quick for me. I had to put away the cats’ food because she would eat that too! She once opened the lid to the rat food when I was in the bathroom and I came out to find her with her whole head and front paws in the bin chowing down…
buttons is a little piggie! he goes behind the couch and eats the dust piles. he comes out with his wiskers covered in dust bunnies and he liks those off too. its so gross!
