So penny gets really frustrated when he’s drinking from the bottle- i think he wants more water than what is coming out. he shakes it back and forth and its just very sad. So i decided to try a bowl. it’s really heavy so they can’t tip it over and penny went to it so fast! he loooves it. sometimes he inhales the water and sneezing a couple of times. but he drinks out of it all the time. max, on the other hand, hasn’t quite figured it out. is there a way i can teach him how to drink? i left the bottle in their play pen too. i don’t want him to get dehydrated or anything. how did you teach your buns to use the bowl?

I’ve heard that some folks put just a little apple juice or pineapple juice into the water (like a few drops) just to flavor it enough that it draws bunny to the bowl to drink.
Mimzy tends to snork it up his nose too. That’s why he’s a bottle boy only.

Rub some banana on the spout. If your rabbit is frustrated with the bottle, switch to a bigger one that allows more water to drip per lick. I find the simple ball in spout concept in a big size allows more water to come out. Many bottles now have springs behind the ball to prevent temperature-induced dripping but these bottles frustrate some buns (mine!). If your bottle spout rattles when you shake it (empty) it does not have a spring.

Well, I think you can offer both. I’m a bowl person for my rabbits – just seems much more natural to me. Eventually Max may figure out about the bowl too. It’s kind of funny you say about learning about the bowl :~) I usually hear the opposite.

Bunners hated his bottle. He rarely drank from it, now he loves water from his bowl. It’s our ritual that he always gets fresh and drinks it up when I get home.

We also do ice cubes, which is probably different in Florida, since they are practically water immediately, but sometimes those are a good substitute when we’re without a bowl or bottle.

Sometimes it just takes rabbits teaching rabbits :~)

I personally like bowls, but cannot use one due to the fact that Fern often digs the water out of the bowl. She does not tip it, she just digs the water out of it

Gizmo refuses to drink from a bottle. He’s a bowl only bun, and i put his water dish on the higher shelf level of his cage so he doesn’t kick any hay or litter in it when he hops around. he knows exactly where it is and is a very good water drinker.

thank god I am not the only one. Everyone say to have a bottle with bunnies but Bugz refused to drink from a bottle so I gave him a bowl and I also gave Anya one. Bugz puts his front feet int he bowlgets them wet and cleans his face! Anya put her whole bum in the bowl so we had to dry her off again!

Monkey has both, but prefers the bowl. She’s so tiny I bet she has a hard time moving the little ball around in the bottle, so it gets annoying for her. I’ll keep having both refilled fresh daily so she’s never out if she tips her bowl over or flops in it like she often does, splashing everywhere.. dorky bun.

I got a bottle and put banana on it next to Sammy’s bowl – wouldn’t touch it. She’s a bowl girl.
But yesterday she had more hay in the bowl than usual, and I wanted to ask you guys if they still drink out of it when they’ve dumped stuff in it?
I occasionally find a dissolving pellet in there too. I want her to drink it any time of the day or night, and figured it’s like being in the wild so they wouldn’t be bothered by unclear water, but I thought I’d ask. She drinks well from it when I see her – usually after I am home and changed it for her.

i change my guys’ water once in the morning and once at night. mostly because its nearly empty- mine still drink from it if there’s a bit o’ hay.

Mine won’t touch a water bowl that has anything in it. But I think that’s just cause mine are picky. And yet they hate my housekeeping. 0_o
My cats are the same way. I have to refill a cup several times a day (and a few at night) to keep them drinking water. But mostly I just turn on the faucet. Now if I could just teach them to use the toilet too….
