Hi there! We just adopted Spencer 5 weeks ago.  He was brought to a 4H fair where my daughter was showing her sheep.  He was found on the side of the highway, poor little guy.  He’s so sweet.  Anyway, not sure how old he is, but he seems young.  We just got him neutered last week and did fine with all that.  So I’ve been doing lots of reading on forums such as this, and am making him toys and distractions to play with instead of chewing at my rugs and furniture.  I found a square basket that I had (a good sized one that he can jump into) and filled it with kraft paper that I ran through my shredder.  We hide a couple of banana chips in there and he jumps in and finds them.  He seems to love this activity.  My only concern is that he eats the paper.  He just doesn’t shred it, he eats it.  He does the same with cardboard boxes.  I never find the pieces he’s chewed, so he’s eating those too.  Is this bad?  He never has any digestive problems.  He pees and poops normally.  He is also litterbox trained, which is lovely!

        Any advice?

I keep special stuff set aside for Hunny to be able to chew on that is paper and cardboard. A little don’t hurt I am sure of it. I have trained her to not chew on other things like furniture and cords and rugs. You can do this by clapping your hands and saying NO when they chew on something that is a “no no”, or, you can put some pennies in a can and shake it every time your bunny wants to chew on things that they are not supposed to chew on. I don’t know how other bunnies do but my bunny, I can let her wander all through the house and not worry about her chewing on things that she is not supposed to chew on because of being so consistant with her training. I keep a magazine under the coffee table just for her to tear up if she so desires and that is hers and she knows it.

Pretty sure half of Felony’s diet is paper. One year he ate every corner off 4 of my law school books…
Obviously you don’t want him eating TONS of it, but if I were you, I’d shred newspaper or pages from a phonebook. It has less chemicals and won’t upset or bind his tummy.

Paper and cardboard is fine for buns. It wears down their teeth and helps keep them regular. You’d want to avoid any color printed or gloss paper materials (such as most magazines). Newspapers and telephone books tend to be the big hits amongst the buns and their ink is vegetable based.

FYI on the newspaper, check it out first. I called all of my local newspapers and none of them use soy based ink, they’re all still using petroleum based. Talk about living in the past… jerks. They need to learn to be bunny safe newspapers. We stick with phone books here.

Thanks everyone. I’ll try the phone books. I have several I don’t use! The basket that we have filled with shredded paper is actually filled with brown kraft (or shipping) paper. You know the paper you would wrap a package in to mail it? I figured that was close to cardboard and has no print on it.

                    We do love him alot!

Monkey has a stack of packing paper she loves, that off whitish un-dyed stuff that you can buy to wrap breakables in when moving. I shredded a bunch and put it in a paper bag for her to play with. She <3s eating it, its a staple of her diet I think. lol

OMG, what are people thinking to leave a bunny by the side of the road?? Thank you so much for rescuing him! He is a beautiful little guy!

lol @ the paper eating. Yup, mine will attack and shred and swallow any paper towel that ventures into their domains. And my mini-rex likes to eat the Carefresh bedding I put in his litter box. I always worry that if they get enough paper, it’ll block up their digestive systems, but I suppose if it’s only once in awhile, it’s okay.

My female palomino/lionhead mix likes the cardboard tubes. Takes her only aobut 30 mintues to make confetti out of them.

I have newspaper “hidden” in one corner of my living room, behind my buns cardboard condo. It sticks up from under the rug. Kay & Winston go back there to dig and chew at the paper.
They think they are being soooo naughty and totally getting away with it!!

Bunners was very into chewing books in my house. I finally bought him his own book to chew on, which was just one of those plain bound journals. Now, none of the other books are an issue, because they aren’t HIS book. lol

The basket filled with shredded paper became a litter box for Spencer … that was shortlived …
