When you offer your bun a treat, do you let him/her take it from your flattened palm ..or your fingertips …and how do you manage to not get bit?

Bella and I are still bonding.. she’s soooo sweet.. and I often offer her a bite sized treat of something (baby carrot, cherry tomato, etc.) from my hand or fingers ………but she has bit me before, so I’m cautious… LOL!  I don’t want her to pick up on any nervous vibe from me ..and I’d like to be sure I’m offering her a treat in the correct bunneh etiquette..

So.. what is the correct etiquette for me to give Miss Bella a treat ..and still maintain our mutual “no biting” agreement?

Btw, she seems to prefer that I hold the treat while she eats… but as I mentioned, she has bit me..

I guess I would have to answer it depends on the rabbit. It sounds like in her case that she is an enthusiastic treater so maybe try putting it flat on the very end tips of your fingers if that makes sense.

Have you tried putting it on the ground once she approaches you or putting your hand flat on the ground to see if she will take it that way? Instead of pinching it between your fingers.

i do different things depending on the treat. i usually give raisins or papaya pieces. max is very cautious with taking the treat in his mouth. he’ll sit there and lick it for five minutes and THEN grab it. penny on the other hand will grab it right away. i usually hold it in my pointer finger and thumb with a lot of treat sticking out away from my fingers.

Both of mine take treats from my fingertips, I have never got bitten. Valen gets so excited he does his carrot dance every morning for a piece of baby carrot! He runs back and forth til I open the lid and takes it right from my fingers and runs off with his prize! It’s a cute routine we have. Now Bella is learning the same thing since she lives right beside him

I must be lucky. Monkey is so dainty when she takes treats from me. She doesn’t touch my fingers with her teeth at all. But she isn’t shy about yanking the treat away from me once she DOES have it in her teeth! lol

Bella isn’t biting me out of malice.. she just wants me to hold the treat.. and in the process, she gets my skin sometimes. She’s not breaking skin or drawing blood, even.. I’m just not fond of her biting me. I don’t want her to get the wrong idea ..that it’s okay behavior, somehow. I will continue to offer her the treat on my flattened palm, I guess …and just squeal at her when she gets too overly zealous with my flesh. LOL

It’s a trust thing.. so I don’t want to pull away from her, giving her the idea that I don’t trust her… but she MUST trust me. (I do this with all of my animals.. try to establish a two way trust bond. I’m just not fluent in bunny speak… yet.)

Wow… I’ve been away from the forum for a couple weeks, trying to get settled into a routine with school and all, and my classes are killer! :/ And I’ve missed so much from you guys!

Aminah, like the others have said, it depends on the rabbit. I’m inclined to think that it’s good that Bella wants you to hold her treat as she eats it. At least she’s comfortable eating around you. Leroy is so grabby and demanding, he’ll snatch the treat from me and run off to eat it. He also licks and gently nibbles my fingers if he’s decided it’s treat time, lol. Though I don’t encourage that behavior – I dont want to lose a finger one day if the bugger gets a bit too uppity! =P I totally understand your concern, those teeth are SHARP. Try putting the treat flat in the palm of your hand, that way your fingers are out of the way! I don’t want to condone bigger treats (b/c bigger/more treats = bigger bunny!) but you might consider a bigger piece of whatever you’re giving her so it keeps her teeth away from your skin.
