I’m wondering if anyone might know what this might be.

Penny has a few red scabs in each ear.  They are small.  I’m just wondering if maybe its from him scratching his ears or maybe ear mites…  Does anyone know what ear mites look like when they first start??

He’s never outside & I checked all of the other bunnies ears and they all look perfect..

edit: they are not deep down inside.

        & I took pictures.

I’m thinking the picture makes it look worse.

        ..red spots/small scabs?

          I’m no expert.
His ears look pretty clean so I don’t think it would be mites.
Have you checked him for fleas? It’s the right time of year & that’s exactly what a flea bite on my leg looks like.
Do you know how to check for fleas?

              Well, the picture helped. LOL

Fleas have a tendency to hang around an animal lower spine because it’s a hard spot for the animal to reach to catch them.
If you have a flea comb you could try combing him & see if you comb any out. You may not find any if there are not a lot yet.
Flea combs can be bought at the Dollar Store. They have teeth that are very, very, very close together.
(My local one has 1 with teeth that are almost 2 inches long, I love this little comb for their butts during a shed.)

This is the best way to check a cat or a dog but, a bunny will be harder because the fur has such a thick undercoat.
Try to separate the hairs somewhere along his spine, try to get right down to see skin, you must see the skin.
Look for any tiny little bits of dark dirt, tiny like sand, will look like you sprinkled finely ground pepper on is skin.
Check several places carefully – no dirt flecks found – no fleas.
If you find the flecks get ahold of a few, even one or 2 will do.
Get a white plate or use your white sink edge.
Put the flecks on the hard white surface & add 1 or 2 drops of water.
              Wait 3 or 4 minutes.
If they are still flecks – its just dirt.
If they melted into a reddish brownish colored streak in the water drop – that’s flea poop.

Oh, the dirt would be much easier to see on Lola because she’s white but, if you can’t find any on her it may just mean that they haven’t spread to her yet.

                  thanks Furcface.

I will be getting one of those brushes. (I love the Dollar Store)

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful.

I’ll look for fleas and if that’s not it I will keep an eye on those little spots.

Mites are really hard to see. Basically you’ll see a disgusting scab type thing

I would suggest NOT google image searching it if your squeamish here’s the least disturbing pic I could find. If you don’t want to view it-just picture dirty scabs

That being said-I’d say that those look like scratches-have you noticed your bunny scratching his ears more then usual? That could indicate paraistes or an ear infection.

Also check his nails-back feet specifically. If you cut them so they are sharp or if he’s chipped a few-they could be jagged enough that normal scratching is doing that.

So summary-what do his nails look like, and are their any extra scratching going on? And I don’t think it’s mites

It’s a comb though, not a brush. My local store has them in packs of two.
1 comb has the long metal teeth with a blue plastic handle, that’s the one I like for shedding butts.
The other is a completely white plastic comb with short teeth & has a tiny magnifying glass in-bedded in it.

Yes, I googled too looking for a suitable image to post before she posted the picture. I couldn’t even look for long enough to find a not too gory one to post. Those pictures were scary gross.

definitely doesn’t look like ear mites but it does look like flea bites to me…

i would check penny like FF suggested and also check lola and the babies. fleas are really dangerous for babies (i think the babies are old enough to be fairly safe) but fleas on rabbits in general are dangerous. if there’s no flea dirt on anyone then i think youre safe (flea dirt, not gross: http://z.about.com/d/vetmedicine/1/G/F/W/flea-dirt-hairDrZak-sm2.jpg).

But those are bad cases of ear mites. Not all rabbits who have ear mites reach those conditions and you would need a vet to do a sraping to find out. Usually it reaches that stage because it’s not treated.

I would say that those spots are due to scratching due to irritation from something.

no fleas. I checked everyone last night & I couldn’t find a thing. I’m going to try and clip his nails, this might be the problem. He got them clipped about 3 or 4 weeks ago so I think its that time again.. Poor thing. I’m going to keep an eye on it for the next few days and then see what I should do from there.

I’m going to pick up one of those brushes Furface was talking about and I’m going to check all of them again.

I was going to ask (Yup laying in bed last night thinking about your bunnies ears!!) -is it both or is that the same ear?

Is her nails sharp? I know Sandy had one of two of those but her nails are super sharp (still to short to cut though) and I think she just poked herself with her nails. Parsnip also had that too and her nails were the same. Just a thought.

Hey everyone. I think it was his nails. I sat down and clipped them. (not very easy) The little spots in his ears are going away.

Ah good, simple solution! maybe one of the nails had a little sharp edge. I would think though that the wounds would look like long scratches in the ear instead of bites, but since they are healing already, then maybe it really was just a sharp nail afterall and the process of “digging” that some bunnies do with their ears, it was more poked than scratched.  Whew!

                                          hey…

i noticed the same exact thing on my 6 months old bunny’s ears ….still searchin wat caused it and its treatment…i would like to think its because of his long sharp nails which i never had it trimmed….if any one has seen same issues please post what it could be and its treatment…

                                          Thanks

Take a look at his nails first-If they are soft to touch-likely not. Do they look like the pictures in this post? Is is both ears?
